“A Charm of it's Own!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 January 2014

A quick 4-day break in Malta. Where to stay? Why not try the Imperial - the oldest hotel in Malta. It's not a 4* or 5* if that's what you want but an above average 3*. What you see is what you get. All the staff are welcoming, friendly, professional and appear happy in their jobs and want to make your stay enjoyable. Generous room size, clean, TV, AC if required, plumbing works well. Had a mini- problem with the AC unit and it was quickly fixed. Buffet breakfast was good. Choice of cold and some hot items (bacon, sausages, grilled tomatoes, boiled/scrambled/poached eggs). Parking available. Can walk to Sliema seafront (5 minutes). Bus stop close by. Nice pool area for Summer/Autumn months. Would we stay again? Most definitely!

Room Tip: Room facing the garden is quiet.

We have just just returned from a Christmas and New Year break at the Imperial. We first found this oasis of calm about twenty years ago when we were staying in one of the new hotels on Sliema front.

The hotel has retained its distinctive charm (and some of the original staff) and its appeal is not for everyone. However, we find that whenever we return to the Imperial we have a feeling of homecoming.

Maybe the hotel bedrooms are basic by the standards of the newer glass and concrete palaces that are mushrooming all over Malta. However, they are kept scrupulously clean - fresh towels every day and clean sheets every second day.

The staff are unobtrusive - available when needed and friendly and polite. The meals are certainly good value for money and as the hotel obviously has to cater for many nationalities this is reflected in menu choices. Anyone requiring haute cuisine daily should seek a 5 star hotel and pay accordingly.

Having stayed at the Imperial many times over the past twenty plus years we can honestly say that our love of the hotel has become indistinguishable from our love of Malta generally - we have "strayed" to other hotels occasionally but our loyalty to the Imperial is now complete - having spent the past two festive seasons with them we will be returning next year - as do several equally satisfied Brits.

It is sad that very often it is only the professional moaners that take time to review and thus bias the ratings.

We agree with other reviewers that the three star rating that this hotel has is not reflected in the quality of service and accommodation offered by this unique hotel - but then we do not go to Malta to watch British TV or to be entertained every evening - that is why we appreciate the tranquillity and comfort the Imperial offers.

Room Tip: If you are unhappy with the room offered the staff are happy to offer several alternatives if they a...

We have just completed our Christmas break with the Imperial making 3 holidays this year at this hotel. The food was great and the staff always friendly and welcoming, It is the only hotel that still offers silver service at evening meals, that I know of. One year I was taken ill and the management and staff really looked after me. The rooms are cleaned every day (even Christmas day and New Years Day) the towels changed every day and I know 4 and 5 star hotels don't always do that. We are now coming into our 10th year visiting this hotel and wouldn't think of going to any other hotels on Malta whilst these standards are kept up.

We have been staying at the Imperial for nearly 10 years, sometimes as many as 4 times a year.
The management and staff are all kind and very friendly. We have just returned from our Christmas holiday, which again was very satisfying, third holiday this year at the Imperial.
The hotel is nearly 160 years old and does require some repair, but you only have to report any problem and it is fixed almost immediately. The hotel is set back from the sea front and is at the top of the hill, not truly suitable for someone with walking problems.
All in all the hotel is very good value for money.

A hotel with character which we found good value for money when compared with prices we could have paid elsewhere for the same week
The location was fine for us with less than a 10 minute walk to the buses and the ferry to Valetta, a half hourly bus to Valetta also stops close to the hotel
We booked on a half board basis but arrived after the restaurant had closed. The receptionist advised us that as we had missed dinner we could have lunch on our leaving day instead, he then recommended a local cafe for a late snack
At all times the reception staff were helpul, the public areas of the hotel and our room were very clean, towels were changed every day
The furniture in our room was basic and the bathroom small but the bed was comfortable and the overall size of the room was generous
Breakfasts had adequate choice but the cooked breakfast was of variable quality
The three course evening meal offered four choices of the main course, table service was individual and prompt, the wine list was reasonably priced as were the hotel bar prices
Unfortunately the weather was not good enough for us to enjoy the garden or the swimming pool but both looked inviting if the weather was good
We did have a mosquito in the room, when mentioned to the receptionist the room was sprayed and a mosquito spray was provided for our use

I have stayed at the 'Imps' on previous trips and always enjoy a revisit. It is unique, in that it is the only hotel in Sliema with a table tennis table.

We are always made most welcome by both staff and management, enjoy our game, a refreshing drink snack and chat with the friendly staff.

I favourably remember many evenings after dinner, socialising in the lounge whilst finishing off the carafe, playing cards, scrabble, watching the local ladies play bridge or just sharing a joke with other guests. A very friendly and convivial atmosphere every night.

This hotel cost us £17 per night including breakfast for two. I read other reviews and find some quite harsh. This hotel is basic and tatty but clean. Breakfast was adequate. You could not say it wasn't value for money. The location was ok if you are fit to walk up and down hills. What ruined it for me was torrential rainfall occurred and the whole building was damp. This place may be ok in the summer but not at this time of year. In spite of using the air con heating unit, our clothing was as wet the next morning. Not somewhere I would recommend or stay again.
