“Nice hotel shame about the hygiene”
Reviewed 30 May 2014

The staff are very friendly. The breakfast was OK shame about the awful sausages! The evening meal was good for the price.
Our problem was with hygiene. We noticed that the soil pipe from our bathroom was broken below the window in the maintenance well. Waste was escaping into the well, yuk!! We reported this to a member of staff and it was not fixed while we were there.
We sat at the same table each morning, on the 2nd day our friend spilled juice and it went through the gap between tables onto the floor, it was still there when we left 5 days later. This stuff worries me, it shows a general lack of care about hygiene. If it wasn't for this I would stay there again.

Room Tip: choose a pool/garden room very quiet.

This hotel needs a drastic updating.
A very noisy hotel, with old furniture.
Not very clean and the smell is absolutely disgusting.
Good location, in the middle of Sliema.
Basic breakfast.
Nice garden and nice swimming pool.

Just got back from our holiday staying at the Imperial. Lovely entrance and old colonial atmosphere, staff very friendly. Our accommodation however was very disappointing. The shower room was very shabby with towels having to be laid on the floor to stop water spilling out of the shower tray. The whole shower room smelt of drains. We were in a ground floor corner room facing the road that was very noisy. The breakfast was very basic and not much choice. The bar closed at 10 o clock in the evening and no entertainment at all. There was only a small old tv with one English channel being sky news. This is a shame because it could be a lovely Hotel with lots of History but badly needs some investment. Malta was lovely for the history but a bit like a building site with all the new flats being built.

Room Tip: choose a room overlooking the pool

Don't be put off by the bad reviews you may see. This is a decent 3 star hotel WITH CHARACTER in the middle of a quiet residential area about 10 minutes walk from all the resort's facilities. It has a gorgeous internal garden with a medium sized pool. We again visited the Imperial Hotel in Sliema, Malta for the second time in early April 2014 for a week. If anything it was better than last time (last year at Easter). See my previous review "Imperial by name, Imperial by Nature". We stayed in a room in the right wing of the hotel on the second floor. As before this was a street facing room, and, as before, there was no traffic noise. This was a standard room not a premium one and so was a bit smaller than those but it was very spacious. As some commentators have stated the hotel needs a bit of maintenance in some rooms, but it is all clean and there is daily maids service. i have to say we do not find it noisy. We just love the character of the place. The hotel has changed little. There are 2 changes, both good, worth mentioning - the free wifi worked well this time and I was able to use my tablet and dinner in the evening is now a 3 course buffet which suited us better.
The hotel is the same as before rejoicing in faded glory. It is a 3 star hotel and if you remember this is what it is and not think it is a 5 star you should be pleased. I found the comments from others about noisiness totally unfounded - there were no language students when we stayed. The clientele are of all ages with a few elderly regulars who like the very slow pace in the hotel. Their nationalities are also very varied - French, Korean, British, German, Italian. And this time the hotel was a lot fuller - at breakfast time the dining room was full but you could always get a seat. Again the evening meals were good value - 3 courses for 14.50 euros per person. Wines are also reasonable about 9-15 euros per bottle. The rates for B&B were also excellent.
The only downside was that the TV (which was old admittedly) only gave you news programmes in English - drama /entertainmennt programmes were in Maltese and other European languages. We did not use the room safe. Malta seems a very safe place and we never felt uneasy.
The staff were all very friendly and competent and we had no problems at all. I found it rather touching all the attention toddlers received from the waiting staff.
The bottom line is this is an excellent value for money hotel with a good location, friendly staff and with bags of charm rather than some soul-less efficient 5 star hotel. You pays your money and get what you chose.
Again, I would recommend it. If we return to Malta we will stay there again.

Room Tip: Rooms with pool and garden views are a bit larger. Room 208 apparently is very big. Some of these po...

Dear Sir / madam,

Thank you very much for taking your time to share your experience at the Imperial with other potential clients.

We appreciate the fact that you returned to the Imperial following your first visit last year. Allow me to welcome you to the very large community of repeat customers that the Imperial hotel has. We are currently hosting one of the longest return visitors to the Imperial, who is celebrating his 50th year of repeated custom.
I appreciate that you mentioned that we are hosting a larger number of customers from an increasing number of varied countries and customs. This could pose a bit of pressure on my team as we strive to ensure the best service to all our customers and keeping in mind the customs of various countries. It is not easy but our dedicated team does strive to achieve this aim.
I am aware of the fact that some reviews mentioned ‘students’. However, one must keep in mind that the hotel is open for all paying customer without any discrimination of age, sex, colour or religion. Unfortunately I cannot say the same from a handful of ‘customers’ who wrote differently. ore your comments when we noted that you were actually accommodated in another hotel and thus your comments are more valuable since you were comparing hotels and services offered.

We do look forward to welcome you back in the near future.

With kind regards,

Joe Attard

A beautiful hotel with character and charm - but is let down by the accomodation which needs drastic updating. The bedroom was very basic - monastical even - no lock on the safe, and as for the bathroom, I would only shower as the bath was so rusty, and the toilet needed bleaching. The dividing walls ( not to mention the dividing door ! ) very thin and you can hear everything going on next door.
A positive note - you won't need an alarm clock as the cleaners start in the corridors very early, and are prone to loud voices and trolleys.
I only had breakfast there once. The selection was absymal, and so overcrowded there was nowhere to sit, and when there was a seat available everything so cluttered because the waitresses couldn't cope.
It's a huge shame as the hotel itself is lovely and I would LOVE to stay there again, but won't as I need to sleep when on holiday.

Room Tip: Avoid the ground floor opposite the lift.

We stayed at Imperial Hotel for 4 nights. It is conveniently located not too far away from tourists facilities, restaurants ,shops and seafront, 10 -15 minutes walk to Sliema Ferries where buses and ferries can take you to Valetta.. There is a bus stop opposite the hotel, bus 21 runs regularly
to Sliema Ferries . Same bus from Valetta terminus brings you almost right outside the hotel.I have read a number of positive reviews about this hotel, that it is an old building but full of charm and character, these prompted me to see for myself so booked 4 nights and I must admit I was not disappointed. We had a room with the garden view, its far from perfect, but its clean ,spacious and comfortable. The staff were pleasant, friendly and very helpful. Breakfast choices is plentiful but its more of 'quantity rather than quality. The 'oldy worldy' décor gives this hotel its charm and character, the garden is a bonus, and the swimming pool looks inviting. For the price, I say no more......

Room Tip: Room with a garden or pool view is much quieter ,for extra fee.

Situated in a quiet residential area, a 10-15 minute walk from the resort centre, (uphill on way back, but with a bus stop just a few yards from the hotel ).
We found the hotel to have enjoyable large public spaces, including a shaded garden area, next to the swimming pool, with plenty of loungers. Staff were friendly and helpful, and the bedrooms were cleaned daily and clean towels given. The room we had (room 230 had a refurbished bathroom and overlooked the pool/garden and this is the quieter side of the hotel. Large lounge area with bar (but it closed at 10). Food variable, fine some nights, breakfast standard fare, could do with more changes. Buffet service just come into service and may stil need more attention to detail and restocking. Overall, good value for money.

Also try the Salisbury pub, just 200 yards away, is a very well kept and friendly sports bar which serves good food at reasonable prices.
Top tip, buy a 6.5 euros bus ticket, which lasts for seven days and takes you anywhere on the island, a bargain.

Room Tip: Go for a room with a pool or garden view, nice and quiet! Avoid next to lift.
