“Good value in central location”

We were pleasantly surprised. Our bedroom & bathroom were both large, well furnished and clean. There was a modern Reception and Lounge which like all the hotel, was kept tidy. Food was cooked well, although maybe just a little bland, but with plenty of choice. We found all the staff friendly and helpful. We booked direct with the hotel and that was completed efficiently. In summary, whilst it wasn’t luxurious, it was nevertheless clean, with good accommodation and a very reasonable standard of catering.
The hotel is very conveniently situated in a quiet street within a few minutes walk of the Sliema seafront, the shops, the ferry to Valletta, and the bus terminus.

We stayed at the Plevna at the end of January and had an excellent time this is the tenth time we have stayed there. The rooms are comfortable and all the staff are most friendly. The breakfast is a buffet and you can have what you want. The head waiter Charles is most helpful and obliging. We will be going again next year

I spent 4 nights at Plevna and we paid 32 Euros per night for a double room. Whilst the hotel wasn't perfect at this price it was good value.

Starting with the negatives -;

The ensuite could have done with a very thorugh clean. However the room itself was clean and indeed was cleaned each day we were there. The shower which was located in the bath wasn't great.

We couldn't get the air conditioning in the room to work which meant the room was slightly cold at night.

As some previous reviewers have mentioned we could not get connected to the free wi fi in the reception area. However there were 2 computers in the reception area which we were able to access the internet on.

The juice at breakfast was strange tasting. Also breakfast ended at 9am which we thought was a bit early. However the breakfast in general was ok particularly bearing in mind the price we paid for our room. There was a choice of cereal, cold meat and cheese, a full English Breakfast and cakes.

The positives -:

The hotel is located only a couple of minutes walk from the sea front where there is a bus stop for buses to Valletta and the Airport. It is about a 5 minute walk to Sliema Ferries where one can get other buses to various loactions around the island as well as the ferry to Valletta. There are also various restaraunts and bars in this area.

Generally speaking the street where the hotel is located is quite quiet. However during our stay due to roadworks taking place some traffic appeared to be diverted up this road but in general there wasn't to much road noise in the rooms.

The staff were friendly and efficient.

All in all considering the price it is hard to be to critical of the hotel and indeed it could be described as good value for money. However if you want luxury then this hotel is probably not the one to choose.

Stayed here in February 2013 with family, found the hotel staff (manager, receptionists and waiters) to be friendly, the rooms large, clean and warm with a view of the sea (side view).
Great location in Sliema, only a few minutes stroll to the seafront as well as the harbour/shopping/restaurant area. Very good value for money.
Only downsides: Wifi was only in the lobby, and even then i couldn't get it to work and food in the restaurant was average but edible. Lastly, school parties stay in this hotel, which means at peak times restaurant can be busy and loud, but waiters usually manage well.

After trying a dozen 2 or 3 stars hotel in the city, finally I found the best place to stay for business trips. Staring from reception to kitchen every corner was clean and that impressed me a lot. Furnished bedrooms had all the things of need and the bed I can't forget was very comfortable. The place is centrally located just 5 minutes from the centre of Sliema and 2 min from the sea. Food was fresh and delicious. Staff is simply great. I will definitely recommend this place to my friends.

Stayed here with husband. The staff are great - especially Charles - the head waiter. Yes it is budget accommodation with a limited menu. But it is clean with daily maid service. I found no faults with my room. Just off the sea front but in a quiet street. We have stayed here before and would have no hesitation recommending half board. With limited bar service full board would be a waste of money

-- Avoid...go elsewhere...poor value..."your fault"

In the 2 years since my first stay, this place has gotten a "fur coat, but still has no pants". They covered the lobby with faux marble, but beyond that seem unable to provide a standard, safe, comfortable, value-for-money guest experience. I was very generous about shortcomings before, but there has been no progress -- and this time the Manager even insulted me personally.

1. FOOD: AMBIENCE, VALUE, HEALTH
Of course, no chef can get it right all the time. And low budget equals Jamie Oliver-style (anti-)"turkey twizzler" stuff.
Lunches were simple bar food, served there, i.e., off-the-shelf things.
The food could be cold. A sandwich would be full of onions and bitter rocket. The "chips" were just sliced potatoes, soggy and soaked in oil. At breakfast the "juice" could be only water. In a battered or fried item, the coating was of greater quantity than the item itself. Dishes badly pre-made, like the entire pan of pasta on the steam line that was baked hard as leather, were still served to you -- "buffet" does not mean you serve yourself. "Ice cream": a metal dish with the scoops frozen solid to it.
FOOD is NOT a strong point, nor good value for money.

There is rapid, incessant monotonic jungle drumming with your Breakfast, and similar tannoy din at other times.
There is CCTV in the Dining Room! Why ever?

2. BATHING FACILITIES:
a. Toilet: needs to be pumped several times forcefully for a proper flush. How would folk without strong wrists, or with arthritis manage. Leave it for the maid? For men, the toilet seat will not stay up.
b. Shower: is also from the last century, with water spurting out as much from where the showerhead connects to the rubber hose, as for the showering. It always squirts apart, leaving you in the cold while you try to shove them together.
When was the last time you saw a rubber hose for a shower, rather than the circular silvery sleeve-type covering it? After the Doorknob fell, and then the Curtain Rod -- you hesitate to add the Shower to the maintenance list, and so just put up with shrivering and struggling them back together.
The Flooring is slippery tile, and there are no Hand Rails.
So, back to the summer camp days of cold, rough shower blocks.

3. TV: antique, smallest 12", requiring 20/20 vision due to its distance from the bed. Only 4 channels -- BBC, CNN, 2 foreign language.

4. REPAIRS, DECREPIT FABRIC & FURNISHINGS
a. Doorknob fell off the first day. It took 1 1/2 days to have it reattached. I was returning to the room when I saw the chap walking away, dressed in track suit, trainers, carrying 2 shopping sacks -- as though just off the street. I hailed him and asked: "You're the hotel maintenance man...don't you have a key?" He said rudely and pointed: "You have the key." Of course, it's my room . Strange policy that they don't trust him with a key.
b. Then the Curtain Rod collapsed, but that only took a day to repair.
c. The Room Doors are flimsy thin boards. At one I saw some students peeking through the slats -- and it was not their own room.
d.The ceiling tiles immediately above the pillow area of my bed showed large expanse of prominent water stains. Not reassuring.
e. You could go to Breakfast at 0700 and come back to find the Maid (her term) already at work; in fact I found both her and the Housekeeper in my room at about 0730. I mean, she is very nice -- but had I known, I would have put things away.

5. HEATER:
The antiquated unit was blowing Cold air; upon complaining, the waiter came and fiddled with a remote he brought and took away, as you are not trusted with it. Thereafter, you and the room could be cold, but "the heater says no". It determines "when", and only for as long as it wants, even though you and the room itself are still cold. Very unpleasant, not comfortable. This, on a holiday?

6. COMMUNAL SANITATION: I found that the WC off the lobby contained a sink stopped up with dirty water; the washing items were two small well-used slabs of bar soap, and a cloth handtowel -- in this day and age. It's cleaner to go unwashed than use these bacteria-laden items!

7. MANAGEMENT: from the Fawlty Towers School. They have a history, as in other reviews, for maligning guests.
I emailed 6 days before arrival, and verified the WiFi in the lounge.
a. THURSDAY -- Wifi connected properly for my iPad, less than 30 days old.
b. FRIDAY -- in morning, hotel had its provider Ozone 'reboot', or etc., their equipment. Henceforth, no connection (for entire stay). Hotel confirmed they were still trying to work it out with Ozone.
c. SATURDAY -- in morning, still no connection. Mr DV, Manager, said take it to iCenter, the Apple Reseller to check out iPad. Jonathan checked it, it picked up Wifi there, and was perfect. I reported back to Mr DV, i.e., it's Ozone's fiddling on FRIDAY that negated the WiFi provision of THURSDAY. Wouldn't he want them to make whole the situation so all his guests could benefit -- especially a repeat customer? Reluctantly, after more irrelevant "the WiFi serves everyone but you", he agreed to contact Ozone.
At 1830 Ozone tech Robert and I 1) checked my iPad, 2) was able to get WiFi via a paid Ozone hotspot card, but not the hotel WiFi, and 3) were Not able to connect with the hotel WiFi even on his smart phone. So it was what they did on FRIDAY, NOT my pc. He verified with his office that someone would definitely come to fix the hotel equipment the next day, though a SUNDAY.
d. SUNDAY -- came and went.
e. MONDAY -- in morning, still no WiFi. I wrote to Mr DV (because on SATURDAY he admonished me not to approach him directly) about these events. As management, wouldn't he want determine what his supplier Ozone was able to do yesterday? When we met, he regurgitated how there was WiFi, etc -- but reluctantly said he would follow-up with Ozone.
I repeated: I was able to get WiFi on THURSDAY, and I am still able to in shops, the 2 large malls and Apple Store, but in hotel only with a paid hotspot card, not via their equipment. So my pc is alright; it was due to Ozone.
f. TUESDAY -- by noon he still had not done anything! Rather than even make a phone call to Ozone, he chose to deprive a paying, repeat guest: "WiFi works here, check your computer, you're the problem": The Fawlty Towers' "nothing to do with me" excuse.

The worst Abuse was him calling me a LIAR: "It's only what you tell me, what tech Robert said, i.e., about promising that someone would come Sunday, and that he could not get WiFi here on his phone", "I wasn't there", "How I know what you say is true".
Why didn't he just call them? Will he accuse as a LIAR the next person who cannot connect?
At this insult, I lost the will to live, did a volte-face and walked away.

CONCLUSION:
1. The ROOM is cold, drab, ill-lit, tired, cheerless.
2. The FOOD is merely average, with frequent faults.

I rarely give the lowest rating, but on this second visit I have no choice. This facility suits the 18-30's and/or those who expect to rough it, go on the cheap, are physically fit with plenty insurance and their own gear. Thereby, when things fail, they can blame themselves for the Fawlty Towers Management-style of not accepting responsibility.

Others who expect value for money and fulfilled promises, who want safety, courteous treatment by management, and standard comfort are best advised to Stay Away, Go Elsewhere.

STAFF: I wish the best for the room Maid VALERIE, who was very nice; SANDRA and MARY ROSE, the Receptionists, lovely, and ever so helpful; NORVIC, the waiter, hardworking; and MARIE, the barmaid, super, very kind and so personable. I am comforted to know that they are so proficient that they can parachute anywhere in the hospitality industry and make a success of it.
