“Depends on which room!”
Reviewed 22 May 2011

We have just returned from a 5 day break to the Waterfront Hotel. Firstly we have never travelled to Malta before and my impression of Sliema overall is quite scruffy. Alot of building works are going on plus roads and pavements are unkempt, a few doors down from the hotel was a doorway (presumably an empty building) with rubbish strewn on the door step and was never cleared all the time during our stay.

The plus points for the hotel, nice bar/foyer area which were well maintained. Our first room was 405, a side sea-view which we had a paid a supplement for. Before arrival my wife had emailed the hotel requesting a high floor quiet room, so we were directly opposite the lift and given the 4th floor, half way up only. However in fairness the lift didn't prove to be a problem but the noise off the road was horrendous throughout the day with passing traffic and was relentless. It did quieten down marginally at night but you couldn't have the balcony window open as it would still of been too nosiy.

Our main problem with this room was the air-conditioning or lack of it as it was stifling. We reported this to the reception staff Jonathan & Sylvia the afternoon we arrived who informed us that the air-conditioning was not on during the day and could only be operated after 6pm, this later was changed to 4pm from the maintenance man who attempted to repair it. If you read the hotel key features in the rooms it states that the air-conditioning can be individually operated by guests to suit, at no time time does it mention you can only operate it from tea-time only! The first night was unbearable with the heat and so the following morning my wife went down to reception at 7.30am and spoke to another receptionist who was far more helpful and eventually organised for us to swap room to 615 the inner court yard. Immediately you could feel the air-conditioning working and miraculously this could be operated at any time of the day, the inner court yard was quiet and being on the 6th floor you could still see the harbour although I realise you wouldn't on all floors from the 4th downwards but these rooms are the standard hotel rooms (although the furnishings are exactly the same as the seaview ones etc)

Thankfully the rest of the holiday went well, breakfast was the usual cereals, continental cheeses salamis etc, hot buffet with a super view over the harbour from the restaurant. We didn't eat at the hotel for evening meals but tried several of the local restaurants in the town, some are better than others and it does depend on what you order as we visited a place twice, the first night was excellent and the second time was below par.

The hop on and ride buses combine a harbour cruise included in the price of the ticket as well which is well worth going on as alot of the history and sights in the harbour were explained. the buses were a good way to explore the island and we really enjoyed the north island tour, our second excursion was to Gozo which we personally found overated and very disappointing plus to get to the ferry harbour and the crossing took nearly 2 hours each way. Also a visit to Valletta is a must and was really enjoyable.

So overall we heard the saying'you either love or hate Malta', well we certainly enjoyed Valletta and the people on the island are extremely hospitable which is alot of it's charm. We didn't appreciate being lied to by Jonathan & Sylvia regarding the air-conditioning in the rooms which the housekeeper confirmed should be operable throughout the day. Would we return to Malta, well yes, maybe not to this hotel as we would prefer to stay in Valletta next time but there is nothing wrong with this hotel, however perhaps next time certain reception staff should think about what they tell guests and not deliberatly misinform them.

Room Tip: Go for an inner courtyard room

I have to disagree with the last reviewer this is a very nice hotel, i have stayed there on several occasions. Maybe the hotel is in need of a little refurbishment to keep it in tip top order but overall i would recommend it. The staff are very nice and any complaints are dealt with professionally and with a smile.

Service abysmal. Waited two and a half hours to get towels ..Despite calling on several occasions! Food poor to just about OK. Rotten apples in fruit bowl at dinner. Plates and cutlery not always clean. Limited choice of menu. Vegetarian choice a bit of a joke unless you like salad and salad and salad. Definitely not a 4star hotel. More accurately a 2 star aspiring to be a 3 star. Certainly not impressed and felt let down by earlier evaluations. The hotel needs a proper compliment of staff trained in hotelliership across the board. Overall, if you have not booked this hotel be thankful. If you have, try to cancel or get a medical certificate to present to your insurance company stating that you are not well enough to go on holiday. Save your money, you have been warned. Malta overall is a friendly place worth visiting. Just be careful with your hotel choice. Happy Holidays!

This hotel is located in a very handy spot to for visiting Valetta by ferry or taking the tour busses that travel around the island. It's also close to the many excursion boats that are moored up nearby. The Breakfast has ample choice and the hotel room is spacious, clean and very scenic (Harbour View)
My only grumble would be the lack of exceiting little restaurants that offered something different near the hotel. Not to take anything away from the hotels own pizza restaurant & cafe which were very tasty.
Overall a very nice location and hotel.

Just got back from a weeks holiday and didn't get one decent night's sleep ...We were at the front ,facing the harbour on the 7th floor, and the traffic noise was horrendous as the windows are not double glazed, and also pillows are as flat as a postage stamp. The bathroom had a thin nylon shower curtain and a black around the edge of the bath....There were just 8 hangers for the 2 of us,and no iron/ironing board. You could request to borrow one,but would probably have to wait until the next day as there is only 2 in the hotel.
At breakfast time we had to go down in the lift to the reception area on 0,then walk across the lounge to other lift to go to the 1st floor. You have to get your own tea and coffee out of a machine, also juice form another. If you like streaky bacon with more fat than bacon, the you are in for a treat...
I sent an email before I booked to ask if the pool was heated and open in April and was told not heated but open. There was however a notice up in the lift to say the pool and surrounding area's were closed due to maintenance. They did however open a small area in the middle if the week on the 5th floor to sunbathe, but with just 5 loungers.
Also towards the end of the week we had a family of ants running around the tv area, and in the drawers,.I asked for some ant spray, which I received several hours later, but by this time they had moved along to the bed and were running up and down the headboard...
Finally if you want to use the internet you have to pay 5 euro for a voucher which lasts for 100mins...10mins each session and if you go over it counts as another 10mins.....Needless to say we won't be staying here again....

We went to this hotel with Thomsons for a fortnight and got a reasonably priced late deal - it came down to around £440 each from £550 for a fortnight with flights so we decided to book it after reading the good reviews on here.

The lobby area is very pleasant - we never sat in the bar area which is immediately adjacent to lobby so not sure how that was - though there was some absolutely abysmal 'live' music on a couple of nights. Our room 317 was a good size and comfortable - carpet on the floor which was a bit of a luxury! It was facing an internal courtyard on the 3rd floor (which was the ground floor of the courtyard) and rather dark. There was quite a loud humming noise much of the evening and also sometimes during the night which was a bit irritating - not sure what it was from. The main stairs were not accessible other than as a fire escape which was a bit frustrating when you only wanted to go down one or two floors - especially as my partner is a bit phobic about lifts! The rooms were cleaned daily and fairly well and I was relieved to see they had 'Do not disturb' signs which I always find makes for a relaxing stay. Location was good - mid way between bus stops for Valletta and 10 mins walk to Sliema Ferry bus terminus for direct buses to Gozo ferry, Mdina and Golden Bay. we were disappointed that the rooftop terrace was not open as we would have liked to see the views from there.

The breakfast was average - poor coffee and watered fruit juice and some of the breakfast cold meats were not as cold as I thought they should be but no tummy problems resulted so probably ok. The hot breakfast buffet was ok - though you had to cut lots of fat off the bacon!

The porters we spoke to at the start and end of the holiday were very pleasant but we did not really speak to anyone else other than to get a corkscrew for the wine left by Thomsons in our room so can't really comment - though they seemed nice enough.

I couldn't really give this 4 stars but probably about 3 1/2. Would have no qualms about recommending it but be aware of the noise problem in the back rooms if you are irritated by such things.

Also be aware that if you walk on the sea side of the road when going for a bus in the morning you will be hounded by boat and bus trip sellers all the way! Also time share touts are out in force!

Room Tip: Don't use the service lifts like we did!
