“A really enjoyable holiday at the Waterfront”
Reviewed 2 May 2012

I’ve just returned from a really lovely holiday at the Waterfront Hotel. The hotel was spotlessly clean and the staff were so friendly and helpful. It is always my policy to talk to the staff as I want to be spoken to and I always receive a friendly welcome. You do get some members of the public who think the staff are below them and treat them accordingly, this is not my way.

I read some reviews regarding the noisy road outside the hotel, it is busy but at this time of year I could shut the windows and didn’t hear anything that kept me awake. We had a sea view balcony room on the fifth floor and the view was fantastic, I would certainly recommend it.

The food in the evening (the main course) although limited in variety was very good. Where there is a contradiction to this was the salad bar, I don’t think I’ve ever seen so much choice and beautifully presented. Also the breakfast was exceptional with four choices of eggs, fried, scrambled, boiled and an omelette. Sausages, bacon, find the meat cut that you usually get abroad, grilled tomatoes, baked beans, four different cereals and four different kinds of bread including fruit loaf, and the usual cold meat selection.

Entertainment was very limited; we only saw evening entertainment once so most evenings we went out, although we may have missed it.

I have been to Malta seven times in various hotels but I will certainly return to this one

The Waterfront has many virtues but one disqualifying feature: noisy music from parties in the hotel. One night we returned to our room at 6 PM tired from a day of touring to find it filled with music from an event on the 5th floor front terrace beamed right at our balcony. Fortunately when we returned at 7:30 PM from the lobby that event and its noise had ended. Two nights later however the music came from the 8th floor roof and lasted from 9:30 PM to 12:20 AM. Calls to the front desk were useless: the party "would end soon" at 10, 11, and at midnight.

Stayed for a week in late April 2012 on first visit to Malta. Sign out front has 4 stars; remove at least a fraction of one. Section of the Strand is quite lively so very convenient to walk within 10 minutes to many attractions. Downside of location is excessive weekend PM noise from nearby clubs and revelers and loss of sidewalk access to seating & mingling by same perpetrators. I asked for and got a [marginally] quieter room on top [7th] floor.

Local well-provisioned market up alleyway fine for fresh bread, fruit, yogurt and halal products. Breakfast variety quite disappointing to me - as a visitor to Europe and Asia - but apparently up to "English standard". As other reviews have stated, bathroom is outdated and minimally provisioned - few towels and no toiletries [bring your own hair-care products!]. Hotel staff
usually helpful and would consider another stay here, based mainly on price and consistent,
basic performance.

My husband, I and another couple stayed here for 5 nights in mid-April 2012. The hotel is in a brilliant position overlooking the water facing Valetta. The rooms were clean and comfortable, the staff were all helpful and pleasant and the food at breakfast was fine. Drinks, coffees etc from the bar and cafe were all very reasonably priced. The hotel was close to both service bus stops and the hop-on hop-off bus station. There were a number of good bars/restaurants close by and a variety of shops were within walking distance. Cannot fault the hotel or its position.

Have just returned from a week in Malta staying at the Waterfront. Initial impressions were good. Welcomed on arrival and shown to room very quickly. A bit disconcerted by road but view was OK - shipyard and views to the right over Valletta. Road was busy but not too noisy at night, except for the last night, a Saturday, when the traffic was non stop and when you have to get up at 4:30 for an early flight..... Bathroom is not up to scratch. Functional but tired. From past photos bedding has not changed since 2005. Food was ok. Bacon is not up to much and fruit salad was apple and oranges. Stayed B&B and glad I did as I would not have wanted to eat there every night. Found a good Indian and Chinese just along the Strand at Bay View Hotel. This is the second visit to Malta. Last visit was in 2005 when the buses were like the photos but now it is too crowded, too many hotels being built and the driving is lethal. When the hire car you receive is dented and bashed about and the Hertz rep only says do you want to take out fully comp insurance or you will have to pay 650e. I think it says it all. Last trip to Malta what a disappointment after such a pleasant 1st visit.

This hotel has good and bad points like all hotels. So I will try and detail them the best I can.

PROS: The situation of the hotel is outstanding facing the sea/bay with beautiful views.
The bar and reception are very carefully decorated in a nautical theme.
The Cafe has outstanding cakes for afternoon treats.
The rooms are clean and fresh looking,
Very near everything to get round the island.
The bar was very good in the evening for quiet drinks and people watching.
Seating in room was very nice with two chairs for the balcony.

CONS: The bathroom needs updating badly as most hotels do. The shower curtain was not nice at the bottom. Mould in the corners of the tiles. Shower gel provided but the shower gel dispenser fell of the wall. The shower came out of the sixties. It was a plastic shower with a rubber hose. In my opinion not up to 4 star standard but I have stayed in much worse. There is also no tea/coffee making facilities so you have to buy it from the bar or cafe. The Internet is expensive and did not work anyway. Internet shop just down the road and very cheap. The bed sheets did not fit the bed, they were too small. The towels had sewn up holes in and were very thin.

But for all the bad points please do not be put off I would stay here again if only for the view.

Room Tip: You can walk all around the bays if you wish or the local buses are very good.

We booked a week at the Waterfront from Feb 4th. We paid for a limited sea view room and were very pleased with the room on the 3rd floor wiht a balcony from which we could see accross to Valletta and up to the Pointe shopping centre. We had heard that the main road was noisy and yes there was a lot of traffic but it didn't bother us at all.
Room was clean, light and airy, comfy bed and nice clean bathroom. There was plenty of hanging and drawer space and a safe, tv and mini bar. We were right opposite lift which caused no problem at all with noise.
Food was very good, good choice of cereal, breads, beans, bacon, sausages, tomatoes and 3 types of egg every day as well as fruit, youghurt and some sort of cake or pastry every day. Dinner was always a different carvery, another meat option, fish, vegetarian option, pasta, 2 choices of veg, 2 different potatoes, huge and tasty salad selection, bread rools, soup and also a varied dessert section with at least 5 different flavours of ice cream. Service in the bar was always quick and efficient and prices were good.
Hotel is in a great location and easy for bus and ferry as well as walkling along the seafront.
We can't wait to return.

Room Tip: Not worth paying for a sea view as you can see the sea front just as well from a side sea view and i...
