The Waterfront Hotel

Have just returned from a 2 week holiday at the Waterfront Hotel. The hotel is in a lovely position with views of the harbour and Valleta. The Captain Morgan trips and the water taxi to Valleta are only a few minutes walk away. The hotel is spotlessly clean and the staff very friendly especially the bar staff. We were in room 718 it was very quiet and had good views of the harbour and Valletta. The only complaint was the air conditioning in the room was not very good and it became very hot in the room at night. We were only bed and breakfast after reading reviews on here about poor food. I'm glad of this as the breakfast was poor the choice of cereal was limited and it tasted like cheap cereal. There was limited fresh fruit and never any bananas. My husband had the cooked breakfast and was not impressed with that. There is a seperate restaurant called the Bassilico, we ate there most nights and the food was lovely the staff were always nice and the prices very reasonable. I would return to this hotel but it would be nice if they could improve on the food.

Room Tip: room 718 has lovely views and is very quiet

We have just returned from a 7 day break with our friends in Sliema, Malta. We flew with EasyJet from Manchester and stayed half board at The Waterfront Hotel. This hotel is centrally situated on the main urban dual carriageway overlooking the harbour and Valleta. It is an attractive hotel which I believe has recently been refurbished and it shows. Classed as Four Star, I would not disagree with the rating. All amenities were clean and efficient with most of the furniture being new or recently refurbed.
We requested quiet rooms due to previous comments regarding outside noise and were allocated inner rooms overlooking an enclosed and pleasant courtyard setting. I spoke to two ladies who had an outside room and they were not affected by the outside traffic noise stating the double glazing was effective. I have no experience and rely entirely on their judgement. There was no exterior interference with the peace and quiet in our room although the Air conditioning unit was noisy on all but the lowest setting. It worked and was acceptable to us. The rooms were comfortable with ample hanging and drawer space, equipped with a ‘free to use’ room safe and a pay as you go fridge. We didn’t use the mini bar but did use the facility to cool drinks bought outside. Prices were not overly high but much cheaper if bought at retail outlets. Prices for alcoholic drinks in the hotel were higher than outside but again not silly. Coffee was excellent value and considerably cheaper than UK, 5 euros for four coffees/ lattes etc.
The bathroom was adequate and everything worked but the tap operated shower served by a white plastic tube was basic. It did work well so I did not have an issue with this utilitarian facility. Tiles around the bath could have benefited from re-grouting or brightening up but were not disgusting. Water was always hot and the variation controls efficient. Towels were changed daily, if required and the room was also serviced daily and efficiently.
Being half board we enjoyed a varied and plentiful supply both for breakfast and evening meals all taken in a pleasant dining room overlooking the harbour. Waiting staff were cheerful and efficient. We enjoyed every meal.
As has been previously mentioned by ‘technoman Jul 2011’ the swimming pool is more of a dip tank, but pleasant enough area on the 8th floor. Free towels for the daily use of residents are available and were in reasonable condition from what I saw.
There is really no need to hire a car in Malta as the bus service is very good. New Arriva buses and for 2.60 Euros each you can use your ticket all day, hop on hop off all services. If required a weeks ticket can be purchased further reducing the daily cost. Only trouble is congestion at peak times, condition of the roads and the inability of all drivers to drive with anything less than a lead boot on the accelerator and brake. Our transfer taxi driver admitted changing the brake pads monthly! I was not surprised. Motorist were however considerate to pedestrians who mainly consist of tourists who bring the money to Malta and they know it. Everywhere we went the locals were friendly and clearly pro British. All the shops, indeed all the signage is in English which is widely spoken.
We would certainly return to The Waterfront Hotel, it is good value and up to standard.

Room Tip: Harbour view rooms will have best view, inner rooms are very quiet. Side sea view probably not the m...

The hotel was spotless and the staff friendly. The bedroom was large and the beds (we had twins) were comfortable to our old bones! Everything worked except the TV which was repaired/changed when we reported it. Perhaps the bathroom could do with a bit of updating but everything was clean and worked.

The location is OK with a good bus service and ferries to Valetta but the road is noisy at times. We were in room 712 on the top floor and it was still disturbing at times. However, the view was stunning. There was also a lot of noise from the nearby fairground but this finished around 11. We found the single glazed doors didn't really reduce the noise greatly and there was the usual dilemma of whether to have the air conditioning on, thereby adding to the noise. I expect any later than May and there would be no choice!

The pavements are pretty uneven and the clientele from some cafes block them as they smoke outside.

We only had B&B - the breakfast was OK - there was plenty of it but the choice was limited and got a bit boring. We ate in the Brasilco restaurant on a couple of nights and this was fine but there are many similar ones nearby. Bar drinks were reasonably priced.

The lack of tea/coffee facilities in the hotel was a big disappointment.

We had a great holiday and would recommend Malta for those wanting to do more than just frying in the sun. However, I think we would try for a hotel nearer Tigne Point next time although if we ended up in the Waterfront it certainly wouldn't be a disaster.

This hotel is in a good location for ferries and buses to most places on the island. Our room was clean and spacious with a half seaview room which was good but unfortunately on several days there was a horrible drain smell in the bathroom/bedroom. We frequently got charged for the minibar when we hadn't consumed anything which was very irritating - a few other guests assumed peanuts and crisps left on the table were complimentary. The hotel management were also petty about you putting your own things in the minibar and stated that they would be confiscated by the maid. Also annoying was the price of computer use in the lobby - 5 euros for 60mins when most places offered a euro for 15 mins. We were halfboard and the food presentation and variety was lacking with an inability sometimes to top up the buffet trays. The breakfasts were very good though. The staff however were extremely friendly and helpful.

Room Tip: We requested a high quiet room as the main road side could be noisy. Best to go for a seaview or pa...

My husband and I spent two weeks at the Waterfront hotel and had a great time.

The hotel was spotlessly clean and the food, a good selection, was plentiful and very nice. Very good selection at the salad bar too. It's buffet service but the waiters are very nice and good at their jobs. The prices for drinks at night in the restaurant, we were on half board, weren't too bad either. It was good having a free safe and mini bar in the room, as other hotels we have been to there is a charge for a safe.

I filled in a questionnaire at the hotel and said everything was perfect, but forgot to mention that being classed as a 4 star it should really have had tea/coffee supplied in the rooms. (We took our own kettle and coffee) Also the shower, although it worked perfectly, could have been modernised, instead of a rubber hose from the tap. The water was always plentiful and extremely hot.

We had a side sea view and being on the 6th floor we could see across to the Point shopping centre, the ferry boats and part way across the harbour. We were in the curved part of the hotel so if you were on the 4th floor or lower all you looked out on to was a wall and some very nice plants. Not good for two weeks.

The pool isn't great for swimming in as it is small but the terrace where it is situated has the loungers and a snack bar.

We bought a 7 day bus pass, which was great as we toured all around the island, on and off the "Arriva" buses for 12 euros.

All in all we had a wonderful holiday and would recommend the hotel to anyone. We will definitely be going back to Malta

Room Tip: Higher floor for the best views

We visited the Waterfront Hotel in April, 2012, which we found very central to all modes of transport, the entertainment was a man on keyboard singing every wednesday evening. Good choice of food in main restaurant (buffet style) and snacks in the cafe, the Basilico restaurant served pizzas, grills etc which you had to pay extra for. Buses go past the hotel to Valletta, water buses are just a short walkt along the promenade. A daily return ticket for the buses cost 2euros 60 cents, very good value for money, this enabled you to hop on & off at any resort along the way. At the end of our holiday the porter weighed our cases which we found very helpful.

The hotel is itself is definitely a little bit '80s' in style but everything seemed clean and well catered for. The staff are overall lovely - their receptionist sent out for their IT guy to help my colleague and I connect to the chargeable hotel WiFi, which I thought was 'over and above' in terms of customer service. The only reason that it doesn't get a 'very good' is because the breakfast is fairly average in quality (rather than choice) and the room and general facilities are fairly outdated - eg. CRT TV instead of LCD and bathroom very old fashioned but all functional so can't really complain - I just wouldn't come here for luxury that's all....

Room Tip: As you are on the waterfront I would advise anyone to bring earplugs - simply because there are a nu...
