Rooms are a good size, and the beds are good. Plumbing not so great, but this seems to be throughout Malta, toilets just don't flush very effectively. Breakfast room was large with big selection, unfortunately the quality of the food is not very good. The food in Malta is very ordinary, poor quality and lacking in taste. Maybe be had been spoilt after 2 weeks in France. Location is ok, 5 minute walk to ferries. Best way to reach Valetta from Sliema is by ferry. The hotel Waterfront is located on the outskirts of Sliema, not the most upmarket end of Sliema. Pool deck is great for an afternoon drink, views are lovely from the pool deck.

Great location on Sliema Strand, with buses and ferry to Valletta and ferries to Gozo and Comino all within five minutes walk. Harbour view rooms have fantastic view. Internal rooms have balconies onto an internal courtyard. Air-conditioning is quiet and beds very comfortable so easy to have a good night's sleep with the window shut, but lots of street noise may be more of an issue for rooms lower down.
Breakfasts are ok, and plentiful - yoghurts, cereals, fruits, breads, cooked food. Airy restaurant overlooks harbour. Staff are very helpful.
We had one evening meal which was a disappointment. Poor quality food, poorly presented. The waiters were attentive and happy people though and tried their best.
The rooftop 'swimming pool' is tiny - you would only have to lean out from the side to reach the other side. It's more an area to sunbathe and cool down in the water.

Room Tip: Harbour view rooms do have a superb view but will be noisier. Internal rooms also have a balcony ont...

I was a business traveler and stayed here for one night. I was depending on having wifi and stayed here because they advertised that they provided it. When I arrived I was told it was down but would be fixed in 15 mins. This never happened. The room itself was ugly. There were no fitted sheets on the bed and therefore I woke up numerous times on the mattress. The air conditioning barely worked and only works if you have all doors shut which we were not aware of. In addition, I got locked out on the balcony because the door kept jamming. When I checked out I expressed my frustration in not having access to the Internet. They did not care one bit and were not willing to offer any money off. The staff was less than helpful, the rooms were ugly and uncomfortable, and overall I think you'd have a nicer night staying in a hostel.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for review. It was disappointing to read that you had an unsatisfactory stay at our hotel. I have investigated your issues and I was informed that yes it is true that the WiFi was down for 15 minutes but this was sorted by the supplier immediately. Jonathan our Front Office supervisor kept you updated about the WiFI situation and offered you assistance throughout.

I was also informed that you were not happy that we charged you and your guest for a twin room, and not for a single as you had reserved. Kindly appreciate that when a room is occupied by 2 people, charges are as such.

Please do not hesitate to contact me personally on ccamilleri@water.mizzi.com.mt

From outside, The Waterfront looks promising, very promising. We checked in for our two week stay and, having paid a little extra for a sea view room, were initially very happy to be allocated Room 108. The view was indeed stunning. We could see the whole of Sliema harbour and the entrance to Valletta harbour too. It was only later that we were to regret that we also had an excellent view of The Strand, Sliema’s main thoroughfare and the Turkish Food shop on the corner of the street opposite.

The room itself was large, larger than the majority of the hotel’s other rooms, as shown by the first floor fire escape plan. It had three windows (above and to the right of the hotel sign), the main ones opening onto a small balcony. The furniture was plentiful and fairly modern. The bed was large but one side of the mattress had a large dip in it. However, we reckoned we could still sleep on it. The room’s biggest disappointment was the TV, which looked like something from the mid 70s.

After a long, leisurely stroll around Sliema and a tasty burger at the hotel’s Star Café, we retired for a peaceful night’s sleep. Sadly, that it is not what we got. That night we discovered that the room’s windows were useless at keeping noise out. They were old, single glazed and the frames had gaps between them and the walls so that light could be seen outside. The traffic on the main road past the hotel was loud and constant for most of the night. It seemed that young Maltese enjoyed making their exhausts as loud as possible, with sudden acceleration exceedingly popular.

The Turkish Food shop stayed open until 3 a.m. or just after. Many of its customers ate at the pavement tables and enjoyed their vociferous conversations. When the shop closed, the staff seemed to take great pleasure in stacking away the tables and chairs as noisily as they could.

Result, we hardly slept a wink. And not just that night either, but for most of the nights during the rest of our stay. Perhaps we should have complained and asked to move. But a visit to the rooftop swimming pool led us to believe that the noise would be just as bad at a higher level and we liked the size of the room and its views.

Our bathroom was in desperate need of an update. The bath itself had been repaired, the shower curtain was dirty and in need of a wash and the supplied towels were often of very poor quality.

One surprising thing about the Waterfront is that you don’t actually feel, or are made to feel, like a resident. It is quite possible to pass from the front door to the lifts without passing by the reception desk and so you never actually come to know the staff, not even on nodding terms.

The only staff that you do build up any kind of rapport with are the breakfast staff and they can be less than helpful or enthusiastic when asked to clear a table so that you can sit at it. Breakfast fare was very disappointing. Most mornings, the thing I enjoyed the most was toast and jam. The cooked breakfast was poor. The sausages may not have been, sausages that is. The bacon was mainly fat and the scrambled egg was wet. The fried eggs were greasy and the omelettes only appeared every other day.

So after breakfast it was back to the lifts to join the queue to escape. There was nearly always a queue or a wait for the lifts. Perhaps the main reason for that was that, most unusually and inexplicably, the Waterfront does not have a staircase that guests are allowed to use. Even from our first floor room, the only means of access and egress was via the lifts. It is quite ridiculous and somewhat concerning, especially as the lifts display the usual notice about not to be used in case of a fire. But then where are the stairs? Oh yes, you only get to see them in an emergency. Not acceptable, I’m afraid.

So just what has the Waterfront got going for it? A swimming pool? Three strokes takes you the width of the pool. And don’t try getting a drink at the poolside bar or help putting up an umbrella. The bar is often closed and the staff, when they do turn up, unhelpful with anything poolside.

Undeniably, the hotel’s location is excellent. You have almost immediate access to the ferry to Valletta, the boat trips to here, there and everywhere, the sightseeing buses, the still new public bus service, and a full range of shops and restaurants. And a wander around the back streets of Sliema throws up many pleasant surprises.

It also throws up many bars and cafes that have free Wi-fi, something else that the Waterfront does not offer its guests. It also throws up many alternatives to evening meals at the Waterfront. On our final evening there, we had the set 3-course menu at the Basilico. My wife could not eat her main course as the meat was too fatty and the veg most certainly cooked from frozen. We were not charged for her meal. If you do eat at the hotel, the burgers can be recommended. I wouldn’t vouch for anything else.

The Waterfront. From the outside, welcoming and interesting. After being on the inside, perhaps a once in a lifetime experience.

Dear Guest,

Thanks for your review and feedback.

As you might have read in previous reviews the rooms of the hotel are scheduled to be refurbished shortly, as although the furnishings are in good shape we agree with you that some things are now outdated.
I also agree with you that although we have an amazing view our rooms on the lower floors do have the disadvantage of the traffic noise.

I have also discussed your comments about breakfast with our chef and action will be taken.

Please do contact me as I would like to keep you informed about our refurbishing and I would like to invite you over to make up for the disappointment of your last visit.

Enjoyed my short stay on a business trip. Lovely position on the harbour side with fantastic view across the bay towards Valetta. Hotel is clean and comfortable. Rooms with a sea view and small balcony are a good size and well appointed. Bathrooms rather dated and lack the little extras - soaps, shampoo etc. soap in a dispenser is not quite the same. Good varied breakfast buffet. Nice cafe and bar areas. Small rooftop pool and bar is nice area to relax if a little breezy. Hotel is on busy road and you have to balance the harbour side position with the noise of the road which starts quite early. Choose a room on a higher floor. I stayed on the 7th ( of 8) and there was no noise. Paying for wifi is always annoying but it was reliable in room and reception/bar. It was overall a pleasant stay although always frustrating when you are on business and everyone else seems to be on holiday!

My wife and I have recently returned from two weeks at the Waterfront Hotel. I am sorry to say that we found the hotel to be very disappointing for a 4 star rating. We knew that it was a town centre hotel and did not expect gardens and a fancy swimming pool, but they had cut back everything in the hotel back to the bone. We were on a half board basis and the food in the hotel was terrible, in fact the worst that we have ever experienced on holiday. The meat dish on day was cottage pie, with the fish alternative being baked saith. This is unacceptable for a 4 star , perhaps even a 3 star hotel. You could exchange for a meal in the hotel's pizzeria where the food was excellent and served in a quieter environment. There was an allowance of 8-75 euros against the cost of these meals which fell well short of the cost.
The hotel was very clean and the staff were mostly very friendly. We had booked a side view room, but despite the hotel apparently not being full we were unable to exchange our room for either one on a higher floor or preferably with a front view. We were left with a perfect view of the adjoining apartment block across a narrow street, complete with road noise. We were on the second floor. The furnishings were fine but the sheets did not fit the bed--too small. The towels, which were changed on request, were worn thin, sometimes very thin. The entertainment, as advertised, once a week, consisted of an elderly gentlemen singing whilst playing an electric key board. He was quite good. There was a conference suite which could have accommodated better entertainment-perhaps local dancers or musicians.
The swimming pool, all 30 feet of it, was closed on three occasions because of inclement weather which cleared up by mid morning, but remained closed all day. These days turned out to be very hot and sunny.
In all it was a disappointing hotel which we would not recommend others.

Room Tip: Should you wish to stay at this hotel insist on a front view room on a floor above the 6th floor to...

The worst that we have ever encountered. The main meat course one night was cottage pie, with the fish offer, baked saith; not what you expect in a 4 star hole, or even a three star. This was well short of the price of a meal there.
The hotel was very clean and the staff were mostly very pleasant. The finishings were fine but the sheets did not fit the bed and the towels were mostly very thin. There was too much cost cutting in evidence. The only entertainment was an elderly gentleman who played a keyboard and sang, very well. This occurred one night each week. There was a conference suite which could have been used for local dancers or musicians to entertain. This would have cheered up a generally dull situation.
On three occasions, the swimming pool was closed due to inclement weather. By mid morning
the weather improved to very warm and sunny, but the pool and snack bar remained closed all day.
In all this was a disappointing holiday and we would not recommend this particular hotel to anyone, unfortunately
