The Waterfront Hotel
Ranked #4 of 28 Hotels in Sliema
Reviewed 7 January 2014

The strenght of this hotel is their position in Sliema. It is near the bus stop and the boat shuttle to Valletta.
The weak points of the hotel are many.
The rooms are clean but the standard 4-star does not exist. The bedcovers, the bedclothes and towels are old and in some cases broken. Don’t look under the bedclothes, beddings are horrible.
The food is not excellent. Often the dishes are regenerate. After the New Year’s day, at the buffet we have found the same thing for two days. The service at table is not organized. The waiters lose a lot of time. At breakfast there isn’t the warm milk. Two nights we were without bread.

Stayed over Xmas - our room was spacious and had a good side view of the harbour - front facing rooms are best and they get the winter sunshine. The hotel is clean and bright, in a good location, has a pleasant bar and coffee shop area on the ground floor. Easy walk to ferries and public transport. We paid GBP 650, which included all flight costs and B&B for 7 nights. I would consider this to be good value for money. Now for the problems - and this are easily correctable - but really do make a big difference.
Firstly the rooms, and bathrooms, need a little TLC, not a refurbish, just some attention to detail. Silicon sealant in the bathroom has started to discolour, the shower in the bath is a bit Heath Robinson etc.
but the biggest area for concern is the food - well I can only comment on the breakfast as we would never have lunch of dinner here until they sort out breakfast !
breakfast needs a rethink - from the quality and range of the food on offer and its preparation to the service supplied by what appears to be a willing group of employees who lack guidance and training.
At best our breakfast experience throughout was adequate ( if u helped yourself to crockery and cutlery etc ) and at worst Fawlty Towers sprung to mind.
The Chef had problems with the most basic of tasks, a fried egg that was not solid, appeared beyond him on many mornings - the scrambled eggs, I am sure had never been 'eggs' throughout their short existence, but rather some industrial powder jolted back to life by adding water !
It is such a shame that this very pleasant hotel, with many plus features, is let down so badly by the food and the service in the breakfast room - someone needs to sort it out !
4 star ? - not at the moment - not even close !

Room Tip: Front harbour facing and as high as u can get

We have just returned from The Waterfront Hotel in Sliema. Malta.
This has been our 10th time there at Christmas. We met up with our friends from Germany and had a wonderful time. Most of the week was good with sunshine and a few showers but nothing drastic.
We find that The Waterfront Hotel is still excellent in all ways dispite the whiners and whingers moaning about the slighest thing. We found that there has been very little change with breakfast. It is very good considering the amount they have to cater for. We have noted other peoples comments such as no fresh fried eggs, oh dear such a trivial thing it is not worth mentioning.
The Waterfront Hotel employs professional chefs to cater for all of your needs and always make great choices in the menues
Overall the breakfasts are very good. Starting with Cereals, Cold meats and cheese etc and hot grilled eggs tomatoes, bacon, beans together with toast.
Evening meals, if you wish to have them are also very varied. There are freshly carved meats, fish, vegetarian selection, many varieties of vegetables. There is always soup of the day, variety of salads and cold meats toghther with various gateaus and cheese board.
Bedding was changed every 3 days and towels were changed as often as you needed.
Free Wifi has now been installed and next year there will be tea/coffee facilities in the rooms.
All of the staff work extreemely hard and are friendly and helpful. They are there to make your holiday a pleasant one and will do all they can to assist you if they can. Treat them with respect and your needs will be dealt with. There was no particular member of the staff who stood out more than others even if there were it would be unfair to say so as they all work hard. They were all exceptional and we would have liked to have given them all a Christmas bonus which they all deserve.
Visited the roof garden and pool and surrounding areas are spotless. When the sun is shining a pleasant few hours up there is very relaxing.
There was a change in management this year and so some changes will be made to make improvements to this very welcoming hotel . They are very aproachable and would rather hear your comments good or bad while you are at the hotel rather than go home and write negative and totally uneccessary comments on Trip Advisor.
We are very fussy as to the standard of hotels we choose and we have been in 5 star hotels which would not meet the standard of the Waterfront Hotel.
We have booked again so that says it all.

Room Tip: Level 7 for best views and less noise.

This was my second visit to the hotel (half-board). The location is superb, with fantastic view on the harbour. Friendly and helpful staff. Clean, quiet and warm (we went in december) room, but bed is uncomfortable (matras and pillows are worn out). The free safe is a very positive point. Food (quality and choise) not 4-star hotel worthy. Good price/quality in general.

A week's visit in November was our third Thomson holiday package. We opted for the half board offering and with the benefit of hindsight, would have been better satisfied with just bed and breakfast, but even the breakfast left much to be desired.
A freshly fried breakfast egg was difficult to come by. Those on offer were vulcanised by being kept warm for too long. Dinner was not something to look forward to. The food presented looked good, but did not live up to its promise. Cheap cuts of meat badly cooked and vegetables that were more than disappointing. Decent ice cream was available, so we at least could count on an acceptable desert. There seemed to be no-one in overall charge of the dining room, which otherwise let down a fairly decent hotel.
This time, we were wise enough to take our travel kettle and supplies of tea and coffee, so were not held to ransom on that front.
The mini bar in the room was interesting. No price list and a threat of confiscation of anything that you might be tempted to put in it. There was also a bottle of wine on the surface above the mini bar. Were you being tempted into some sort of expensive ambush if you opened it? No explanation was given, neither was there a corkscrew if you tried to open it.
I had read negative comments like mine before travelling, but suspected that these were made by people who complain about everything. Their comments were valid!
Our room was on the inside, so it was quiet and had an outlook into an attractively laid out atrium courtyard.
The location was fine. Ideal for buses and the ferry to Valleta

Room Tip: The air conditioning plant in the courtyard can be noisy. Choose a high inside room if you want quie...

Dear Guest,

Happy New Year.

Thank you for your comments and feedback.

I have taken note of your comments about the food and these will be discussed with Executive Chef and the kitchen team.

With regards to the Mini Bar, a price list is displayed on the side board and the wine is left on the side board as it is red wine and this cannot be refrigerated,
