This was my 4th visit to Malta in 9 years but my 1st staying at the Waterfront and I would definitely rate it as the best hotel I have staryed on Malta. The hotel was clean and the bedroms serviced daily. The staff were freindly and helpful on occasions when I interacted with them. Breakfast was a good selection which was all of good quality food the only problem was the lack of friut if you went to breakfast late. I was on B&B so did not eat in the hotel restaruant but did eat in both Star Cafe and Basilico Pizzeria which are both part of the hotel and both provided good food at a reasonable price when compared with other similar restaurants in the area. Like most hotels in Sliema this hotel is on the main road so traffic was ever present but I found it no more noisy than any of the others I stayed at, all of which has been on one of the main roads on either side of the bay - it is the price you pay for a sea view! Travelling alone I felt safe in the hotel and no-one made me feel unwelcome as I have occasionally felt in other hotels - in fact there were several other single travellers there at the same time, inlcuding business travellers. Owing to the time of year of my visit the pool was not open so I can't comment on this. If you are looking for a reasonable but good quality hotel then I would definitely recoomend it.

Location & Access: The hotel is situated on The Strand and overlooks Sliema Harbour with panoramic views across to Valletta. A 25 minute journey by transfer coach from Luqa airport and 15 minutes by public bus to/from Valletta (47 cents each way). Car parking is available off street and limited on street. Walking distance to Sliema’s main shopping area (including M&S), ferry terminal and bus station is about 5 to 10 minutes. Some pavements and roads are in a very poor condition. In the vicinity of the hotel there are a few shops, bars and restaurants. The area is very built up with further high rise construction continuing.Overview: Architecturally the hotel is an imposing white modern 8 storey building, constructed within the last 10 years.Reception and Public Areas: Reception is light and airy with decor on a nautical theme. There is a large comfortable seating area and a bar serving drinks and snacks. This area has the benefit of wifi and there is a small internet station which costs 5 € for 100 minutes (minimum charge). The desk staff were geared up to register a large number of guests arriving at the same time, were very efficient and pleasant. On the ground floor there is also the Star Cafe for drinks and snacks. Corridors are uncluttered; decorated minimally in neutral colours. Lifts are efficient and well maintained, 2 serving all floors and 1 only the ground floor and floors 2 to 8. On the 8th floor there is a small pool and bar (open subject to season). There are several terraces with great vistas overlooking the harbour, Valletta and Sliema town.
Food & Drink: As well as the cafe and bar on the ground floor there are 2 other restaurants; “Basilico” on the mezzanine level serving an a la carte menu and “Regatta” on the 1st floor serving buffet breakfast and dinner. The “Basilico” offers a varied menu and is popular with locals and non-hotel guests. The food which is cooked to order was excellent quality but portions extremely large – a starter between 2 is ample! Expect to pay between 40 € and 50 € for 2 (including wine and water). In the “Regatta” Restaurant the buffet breakfast has an excellent choice of hot and cold items. At busy times, things could run out. High volume catering brings its compromises and in my opinion some of the ingredients were not of the best quality – in particular the tea and coffee served from urns advertising Doue Egberts – but clearly the contents not having that provenance! The serve yourself buffet dinner again had a varied selection, breads, salads followed by soup or pasta, main course of meat, fish or vegetarian, desserts and cheese, biscuits and fresh fruit. All very well presented and with no complaint about the quantity. But unfortunately the quality of some of the ingredients was disappointing. Some of the less popular items, such as grilled tuna, left steaming in bain maries for a long time and completely ruined. The cost for 2 including wine and water 42 €. In both restaurants the staff were polite, friendly but professional. The local Maltese wines on offer were reasonably priced and excellent quality. My Bedroom: Located on the 2nd floor with a balcony with large patio windows overlooking the harbour. The entrance vestibule contained fitted units with a large wardrobe, electronic safe, large mirror and luggage storage. In the spacious bedroom light blue carpet and plain white walls contrasted with the blue and white drapes and bedspreads. The lighting was plentiful but not the brightest. Heating and air conditioning worked perfectly with the addition of being able to open the large patio window for fresh air. Two wicker armchairs, a coffee table, balcony furniture, storage and mini bar. An old style TV had a great selection of TV channels including many that were English language. The only radio channel was the BBC World Service. The single bed was comfortable – but linen and bedspreads were in need of “freshening up” as were the tired drapes and towels. The tiled bathroom was a little dated but everything worked efficiently – the shower having a great pressure and no fluctuation in water temperature. Shower gel and a shower cap were provided but no other toiletries or vanity items. The lack of tea/coffee making facilities was disappointing. Other reviewers have mentioned the issue of noise. I heard no disturbance internally from adjoining bedrooms or corridors. However, it cannot be denied that the noise from traffic is considerable even with the patio doors firmly closed. Traffic tends to build up from 6:00 and continues unabated throughout the day until late evening. The intensity of the noise is without doubt as a result of heavy vehicles travelling to and from local construction sites – literally dozens of cement vehicles and wagons every hour. Maybe when construction is over things will improve. Rooms with side/rear views may not have the problem to the same extent. Overview: My stay was in mid February and although low season the occupancy rate was high with guests travelling on packages from the UK or Germany. Most of the clientele were 55+, all very friendly and out to have a good time. There is no entertainment in the hotel and nothing in particular to amuse young children. A good location and value for money.

Hotel: Waterfront Hotel Sliema
Date of stay: 28.1.2009 to 4.2. 2009

This was our first visit to Malta. We chose the hotel after reading lots of reviews of this and most other hotels in Malta. The deciding factor for us was the high incidence of former guests recording that they would revisit the hotel and also recommend it to their friends. The cost of the room was also important in that it seemed about right for what was being offered and was not too high in case the reports turned out to be incorrect.

The hotel lived up to our expectations and in general represented very good value for money.
The areas which did not meet the requirements for four star establishment were as follows
1. The carpet in our room and the two rooms of our friends were very stained.
2. There was severe mildew all around the inside of the balcony door and window and traces of mildew on the ceiling in the three rooms.
The mildew was actually unacceptable but as it was present in the three rooms which we occupied we took the view that if the hotel had wanted to then they would have removed it so therefore we did not report it to the management. Also the view from each room was superb as they were on the top floor so any other room would definitely not have been so good.

Apart from the foregoing there was not any thing else which deflected one's thoughts from enjoying a stay on the island.
The rooms were cleaned every day to an acceptable standard.
Plus points for the hotel were

1. Underground garage - although in summer there must be a scramble for parking space as there were only approx. 10 spaces. The hump at the exit was also quite annoying although that fitted in with Maltese roads in general (diabolical).

2. The hotel was convenient for the bus, the ferry to Vallettta and Sliema bridge club.

3. The hotel service personnel were extremely friendly which refleted the Maltese people in general. We have never been to such a friendly place. There is one note of caution however, - do not rely on the wakeup call from reception. We had to catch an early flight back home and requested a wake up call from reception. This never came and fortunately we woke in time ourselves. On going into the darkened reception area we found the receptionist fast asleep on a sofa.

4. The food for breakfast and evening meal was excellent and varied, and the wine was moderately priced for acceptable quality vintage.

We stopped at this hotel for Christmas week in a seafront room. No problems with noise as obviously we had the door closed at night.

The room cleaning was first rate, all the staff courteous and the quality and quantity of food was excellent.

I agree with other reviewers, in all a very good hotel and a very pleasant break.

My boyfriend and I stayed at The Waterfront in July. Check in was smooth and we were helped up to our room. TIP// when booking ensure you ask for a sea view and a high floor. We did and it made all the difference as the rooms at the back of the Hotel had no view at all.

The rooms are quite spacious and have plenty of storage space. The balcony is quite small but does the job. In terms of furniture, the basics were there and the room was clean. The bathroom too was very clean and had a shower over the bath. Not luxuary but what we expected for a Malta 4*.

The service was good and all the staff we met were friendly and helpful. The pool is on the small side but was quiet for the whole week so not a problem. There is a pool snack bar which is reasonably priced and serves burgers and sandwhiches etc which were really nice. We ate in the Hotel restaurant Basilico twice for dinner and again it was very reasonably priced and good food. It was very quite and lacked atmosphere though which was a shame. We were B&B but only had breakfast once as we arent really early risers - the food was OK.

The location of the Hotel is good, it is on the main road by the sea and just a short walk from Sliema which has lots of restaurants and shops etc. If you like clubbing then definately go into St Julians which is about a 10min taxi ride away and has loads of bars and clubs open until the early hours.

All in all The Waterfront was a very nice Hotel, it wasnt perfect but was what i expected a 4* Hotel in Malta to be. We would definately return.
