“Too hot to handle”
Reviewed 12 June 2013

Booked Hotel Strand Malta in November 2012 for May 1st -9th 2013. Website as well the Guest book for amenities in the room state all bedrooms have Heat & Air condiditoning controllable as you require. In reality hotel switched off the air condition. No one from the Agency / Hotel prior to arrival advised otherwise and even at check in nothing was mentioned.

I had to raise the issue when heat was coming out instead of cool air. Manager said I was being unreasonable to expect the Hotel policy to be altered for one guest even though it clearly states everywhere they so and no stipulation on dates etc. Even on the front door of the hotel they have air conditioning please close door.

Manager provided a fan not checking if there was a health and safety issue as the lead went across the hallway, so you had to jump over it, together with the leaking toilet so floor was all wet.

When brought to his attention about the guest book in my room and how it stated Air conditioning he declined to comment as he didn’t know what was actually in the book within his own room.
I wrote and complained once back from my sleepless vacation as the room was like a sauna and the agency first ignored my email, then stated well you got what you wanted on paper if not in reality, then they reckon unable to get hold of the hotel, yet when booking they responded in a couple of days.

Now they offer £20.00 compensation for something they had no intention of providing the guest but didn’t even bother to advise the customer beforehand so he can have the choice and think this is acceptable. The agent also try to claim that no one owns their company and have seen others who have had issues when problems occur and prefer to ignore.
As they refuse to offer a reasonable compensation and did ruin my vacation I have take this matter further. But do check beforehand that the hotel does offer all that it says it will.

As regards the room air-conditioning in the hotel , our current centralized system only supports to have the either the HEATING or the COOLING switched on for the whole building , and during the clients stay we were still on heating mode as the temperature was still not hot.

As a matter of fact our Maintenance Department deactivated the unit from the heating function and left his AC the access to the blower only in the room. During his stay the climate was not adaptable to have the cooling on , and in fact all our rooms still have quilts and blankets till today and we also have guest requesting blankets.

The manager on duty , did offer put a fan in the room for his stay , we apologize if he did not plug the fan in the three pin socket , should the client had wanted to move the fan to a different location he only need to ask at reception and we could have obliged to put the fan in whatever location he required.

We understand that the client was disrupted because of his father loss , a few months before but we would have surly done our best to satisfy his requirements as best we could.

Our manager spoke to him and at no point , did he tell him that he was unreasonable , but was only explaining that the system could only be on hot or cold.

So since the system was still on hot , he provided him with a fan to make this comfortable.

our first impression of the hotel was not favorable! the room was airless and SO noisy, but as our time progressed in Malta, we accepted the hotel, for the fantastic value that is was. It was clean, in a prime location, the staff were FANTASTIC and generally excellent value for money. The food wasn't up to much, but being as there are so many good quality, reasonably priced restaurants locally DO NOT bother with half board. The hotel is located on the main bus routes and with a £2 return fee exceptional value. I would recommend this hotel, but you have to accept you get what you pay for, it is by no means the Ritz, but perfectly adequate for a short break in Malta.

The hotel staff are friendly. The hotel was clean, we had to change rooms after the first night, beds were uncomfortable and there was no fresh air flowing through( internal room with small windows overlooking other rooms) The new room was great, with a nice balcony, comfortable beds and great view.
Perfect location for bus and sightseeing trips.
The breakfast was a standard continental type (help yourself) the evening meals however were poor, not a great selection and did not vary.

Room Tip: Don't get room 209! Room 615 was much better, corner balcony with decent view.A/C quite loud as...

The hotel staff were very friendly and polite, stunning view from the roof terrace and great to have a spa pool to use. Breakfast was the standard continental selection. Only issue was the comfort of the beds, which was terrible, we woke each day with aching backs and shoulders! The bathroom was a bit grotty and we were lacking towels after the first day. Other than that, a pleasant stay. A bit annoying having to pay to rent the room safe and pay extra for wi-fi.

Room Tip: You can upgrade to a sea view room, but the road at the front of the hotel is quite busy, so it may...

Great location within Sliema, making it easy to reach all that Malta has to offer. The hotel looks out upon the harbour, with stunning view of Valetta across the water. The customer service was second to none and I truly enjoyed my stay and would recommend 115 The Strand to anyone that wants excellent Maltese hospitality and easy access to everything.

Having no previous experience of Malta we opted to book with Chevron, the company whose adverts seem to have cornered the market in the newspaper holiday pages. First good choice. The transfers were prompt and efficient and all contacts with their staff were very helpful.
I read the information on the hotels on offer and made our choice on the bases of accessibility to transport (not too far from the airport and close enough to the local transport system) as I don't walk as well as I used to. Second good choice. The trips by bus around the island, the short ferry crossing across the harbour all started within an easy walking distance and the local bus-stop was just across the road. By the way, a day-ticket for 2.60 euros is a bargain.
We needed some sunlight after our grim winter and spring, so a front room with a sea view seemed worthwhile. A brilliant third good choice. We had a double room, but the other two rooms along the front of the building (on each floor) are one bedroom apartments.
From the point of having to go out each evening to find somewhere to eat after possibly a heavy day's walking, we opted for the half-board option. A superb fourth good choice. The dining room up on the 8th floor roof terrace had a very good view out over the harbour with enough shelter from the evening breezes.. . . . and for the cost of the upgrade to half board it was a bargain, as we loved the service, the staff's helpful attitude . . . . . and the food was really good and tasty.
All-in-all a great choice of hotel, but I must agree that the sea view from the front of the building was essential to complete the package.
So, yes, on all counts . . . . a good choice.

Room Tip: A front room with a sea view makes all the difference to your enjoyment of this hotel and its facili...
