“Nice hotel, not quite 5*”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 February 2012

We've just come back from a 3 night stay at the Palace. We booked a deal through expedia which was less than £500 including flights from London, so we didn't expect 5*, you get what you pay for. It's smart and clean but looking a bit tired around the edges, the gym and indoor pool are looking a bit shabby.

We had booked a double/twin and were shown to a twin with a balcony on the 2nd floor, it was spacious, seemed ok but we decided to ask for a double, they told us they had no doubles until the next day, but for 25 euros a night they could offer a junior suite on the 6th floor, we had a look and decided it was worth the extra as there was a huge terrace (south facing with great views (room 651)), sun loungers and a king sized bed (although the room was of similar size to the twin we had been shown). You can hear the church bells though, but we didn't mind this. We did think afterwards, that perhaps they did have some doubles available (the hotel didn't seem very full) and they just try to get extra money through upgrades! So specify a double when booking if this is what you prefer.

The aircon in the room would have been too noisy, luckily you don't need it in February!

We also paid extra (12 euros each) for breakfast (a special deal, apparently!), it its worth the extra for breakfast if you have a big appetite but maybe not worth it if you only want something small. There is also a 5 euro per hour wifi charge which is mad!

The pool terrace on the 9th floor looks lovely, and the views from the restaurant and great too. The cocktails we had in the bar on the 9th floor were awful, but maybe we just got the wrong barman.

Taxi tip: don't order a taxi from hotel reception, we paid 8 euros for the privilege!

We had a pleasant stay, there is nothing to dislike about this place but we would probably try somewhere else next time.

Room Tip: Room 651 has a lovely terrace with sun loungers with the sun all day, lovely big bathroom and king s...

We booked a last minute deal at the Palace which included an upgrade to a Superior room. We were dubious prior to arrival but our concerns were shattered immediately as the
greeting upon arrival was really friendly and helpful.
We were thrilled with the room ( or should it be suite) which was large, comfortable and had every facility as had the bathroom.
Breakfast, which is superb, is served on the 9th floor and the restaurant has stunning views over the bay. Throughout our 4 night stay all the staff were courteous and attentive and we will have no hesitation in returning.

I stayed at The Palace for a week now in January 2012 and found it in every manner a great experience. The hotel facilities are stylish but at the same time gives you warm feeling: Excellent atmosphere even thought this was an "off season".

For further relaxing after a busy day at work they have spacious sport facilities with quiet indoor pool and 3 saunas in the relaxing area. I look forward to be back in the spring and then then take advantage of the beautiful roof top swimming pool and the bar with a view over Sliema and the old charming buildings. The outdoor swimming area was closed during my staying now in January - but I can imagine this gem being sparkling when it opens up in the spring.

I found my room spacious and all facilities new and clean. I was offered an upgrade for a reasonable price, which was great.

The staff is friendly and extremely helpful in every manner - you meet warm smile and good service minded people wherever you go: day & night.

I have stayed on several other hotels on Malta. The Palace truly outsmarts them all, with quality, price and the good and service minded staff. I will return and strongly recommend this hotel.

Kind regards!
Larus Olafsson

PS. It takes max 4 min to walk down to the sea side. ;)

Sat in the Palace hotel now been here since sat 28th jan .
How do they get the five stars ,we are in a deluxe room overlooking the sea but the hotel is not on the sea front it's about 10 minutes walk away, but if you have an issue with walking up hills you will need a taxi back 7 euros.

The wi fi I asked to use is 5 euros an hour free everywhere else even in the smallest of bars and not charging you a premium for the beer.
Been in the indoor pool no one to greet you or hand out towels and the changing room is a toilet with two toilets and a shower overlooked by the hospital next door and I mean overlooked (Plain glass).
This area also wanted decorating flaking paint on the ceiling,The instructions on the sauna was to set the time you need and temp and go back in15 minutes and it will be ok to use.
The plush dineing room was closed to hotel guest because of a wedding fare and we were directed the 9th floor ,ok we are not walking but we are not getting what we payfor, wedding fares are bigger fish than us who just spend our hard earned money for a week away.
The staff are very good but they are badly let down by this hotel chain and I think the Maltese tourist board need to get their act together and award the stars that should be awarded.

I have stayed in five star hotels and the things I have hi lighted may seem petty but They never arise in any hotel that get a five star rating by all means come and stay at the Palace but this is my honest and unbiased opinion it should not get the five stars.

We booked this hotel through EasyJet and got a great deal. The hotel far exceeded our expectations as it is a really top class luxury hotel. On arrival we were greeted by the most effiicient and courteous reception staff we have ever encountered, as well as a refreshing cold drink. The hotel is a very high standard throughout, but the rooms are exceptional. Our room on the 5th floor was large with a nice balcony view towards the sea. We were right opposite the church and you can hear the bells in the room altough it didn't disturb our sleep. The bed was enormous and extremely comfortable (hence us not being bothered by the church bells). The bathroom was a good size and well fitted - it was nice that the walls were not full height, so you had privacy wihtout feeling closed in. (The separate toilet was in an enclosed room!) There was a large flat screen TV with a good choice of channels and there was more storage space than you would normally find in any hotel room. We had bathrobes and slippers and other little luxuries. We requested a shaving kit as we hadn't packed one and it arrived within about 3 minutes of calling! We had breakfast included, and there was a fantastic choice! Full English, various different fruits, good selection of cereals, lots of Continental meat / cheese choices, lots of different breads and pastries, and even Sushi! We can't believe anyone could want for more really! Service was good, with plenty of tea and coffee at the table. The other facilities were good, eg rooftop pool (which we didn't use as it was January!) but we did use the indoor pool which is small but adequate. The steam room / sauna / relaxation area is good and well-equipped but we did feel a Jacuzzi would have been a nice addition and we were a bit disappointed not to find one. The gym was good and my wife had an excellent massage in the spa. There was a slight disappointment in the evening food as the main restaurant was not open and the menu choice was a bit limited in the bar (Talk of the Town) although the food and ambience was good, so we ate out most nights. The hotel is in reasonable walking distance of several restaurants in the town and seafront / ferries area - it is not right on the front but it is an easy stroll away. Overall we could not fault it and had a great time. We would use it again if we were in Malta and would highly recommend especially if you enjoy a luxury hotel. This was our first trip to Malta and we had a good time, finding it easy to get around and enjoy the beautiful coastal scenery.

Room Tip: Rooms at the front will hear the bells. 6th floor and above have the best views.
