“A relaxing and smart place”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 April 2014

My wife and I love this hotel and stay here frequently when we visit family in Malta as it always makes it a lovely relaxing holiday. Our first stay was in the month it opened around seven years ago and we have enjoyed every stay since, which has been a couple of times each year. It is part of a small chain of hotels owned by a Maltese family and the management and staff are always extremely welcoming, friendly and helpful and it is encouraging to see in what, with the adjoining Victoria and Palazzo, is quite a large hotel complex just how many of the current staff have been there since it opened.

The hotel is situated at the highest point of Sliema in a quiet location away from the sea front but just a few hundred yards from the harbour on one side, the Med on the other and the shopping and restaurants in between. Rooms, particularly the suites, are quite large and in keeping with the modern and contemporary style of the hotel. All rooms on the outside of the building have balconies, many with sun loungers, and those on higher floors have great views with some looking across the harbour to Valletta, but for the best views go to the roof with the infinity pool and more relaxing sun-loungers. At the roof-top Temptasian restaurant you can also take in great views of Valletta while dining on sumptuous Asian cuisine.

Our favourite place to relax in the evening is in the quiet and comfortable bar with its efficient staff, but you can also go to the bar in the adjoining Victoria sister hotel for a different atmosphere. In the morning breakfast in the spacious ground-floor restaurant can often be taken outside in the sun on the terrace. If we have time we indulge in a treatment at the spa, although we have yet to use the well-equipped gym and indoor pool.

A recent change in the road network means that there is now very little traffic passing the hotel so making it a very pleasant experience on the balconies or when relaxing in the sun outside on the ground-level bar terrace. You are never far from a church in Malta and the Palace is close to two whose bells chime sporadically every quarter hour throughout the day and night, but they are so irregular that after a short while you don't notice them, and anyway they add to the relaxing Mediterranean atmosphere!

Room Tip: Ask off a room on the outside of the building on floor 3 or higher to get a good view.

Dear daffy0114,

I thank you for placing your comments about your stay at The Palace on TripAdvisor.

It would help you to know that the indoor pool is at a standard temperature, following local Health regulations. Any warmer and it will be full of harmful bacteria. We are conscious of our guests' health and well-being, therefore the temperature in the pool is constantly monitored.

Also, on arrival you may upgrade to a room further away from the church side where the bells would not be a bother. A change of rooms is possible only depending on availability.

We hope to see you back at The Palace for more pleasant stays.

Sincerely,

Kevin Callus,

This hotel has many good qualities that make it a 5 star hotel such as very good rooms, an indoor and rooftop pool and attentive staff but the breakfast needs improvement. The fruit was generally hard and tasteless and the frying foods stewed in the warming containers. People should also be aware that the hotel is sited on a hill and in the hot months returning from the sea front people will face a fair trudge up the hill. Valletta is also very hilly. The shower was good and strong. The TV just has a few channels mostly news in different languages. The Bar was a bit friendless in atmosphere and also expensive. There is a lovely little pub about 100 yards up the hill (Salisbury) where the drinks are much cheaper and you can mix with people. There is a sister hotel, the Victoria, attached which has a more friendly bar.

Room Tip: If you choose a sea view it will be of course more expensive.

we stayed for a weekend in the flavours suite, which seems to be a new concept. Nothing can prepare you for the experience and the way this suite was carefully designed. It is based on a retro, coca cola theme with a lot of coke memorabilia and soaps and bath salts flavoured of coca cola! Being a young couple that loves a couple of drinks on holiday, this suite was a perfect match as there is a bar in the room! designed on an american diner theme, together with a diner style booth where you can eat in! There is also a jukebox with cd's you can choose from! wow....what a stay is all I can say, i truly appreciate all the effort in designing the suite...a TV that comes out of a cabinet in front of your bed, all at the control of a remote control....all the types of glasses imaginable in a bar, a beautiful terrace with sunbeds with an amazing view of the grand harbour...where we spent our afternoons soaking up the lovely maltese sun, AMAZING bed...this is something i battle with when we go for breaks as sometimes the beds are really bad, but this one was very comfy with very comfy pillows. The towels are designed to match the bathroom theme, very very good quality. Lovely spacious shower where you can also see views of the grand harbour!! more than this!?!last but not least, the food and the service provided by the staff....this is not a hotel part of an international chain where you might expect certain standards wherever you go, this is a family business..however, staff where thoroughly trained to serve you always, and always with a smile. Staff at reception, staff at the buffet most of all where very very nice and accomodating...mark from the buffet is one of the names that come to mind. During our stay someone from housekeeping also came to check if the room was cleaned properly. We had a small query on the coffee machine provided in the room (delicious) and promptly the front office manager came to explain. We also took the opportunity to ask him about other things and facilites in the room as we were not sure how to operate them, and we wanted to make sure we enjoy every thing in this suite. the food also is amazing, we had the fish night buffet and this might be ironic, but the meat and sauce available was one of the best I have ever had, slow cooked to perfection. Also we take a bit long to eat, and we were still having our main course at 10pm, so mark the head waiter came to check if we wanted anything else from the main course section, very thoughtful, much appreciated. breakfast was like receiving a warm hug in the morning, lovely cooked potatoes not the usual deep fried chips soaking in oil, a vast selection, fresh orange juice which is not always available even in 5star hotels, all topped up with a lovely mimosa as champagne is also available! I have noticed that staff take care of comments and try always to improve things as our last stay was not as excellent as this, for example due to a very noisy ac, and this time the ac worked perfectly without (almost)no noise. If I remember correclty WIFI was not provided, and now it is, and also water was provided (not sure if in all rooms..why do you get free water in all kinds of rooms in UK hotels??or should I say pigeon holes?) Will definitely be back. thank you

Room Tip: high floor for the views and ideally a bit far away from the bells

I stayed at the Palace for 11 nights in March 2014. It was a decent price for a 5 star hotel booked through flexitrips travelling from Newcastle on Easy Jet. Not the most comfortable of flights considering it was 3 and a half hours e.g no movement in seat, no entertainment, knees fairly squashed. However on the plus side the hotel booking was good and considerably less than if you booked direct or went with other holiday companies e.g. Thomson, Low cost holidays. The hotel is good for a city break being in Sliema. I got an upgrade free of charge to a deluxe room which was very spacious with a huge king size bed and very comfortable. I asked for a room away from the bells that ring from the church on a regular basis and was given just that. I couldn't hear them so disturbance was not an issue. The hotel in very clean. The food is of an excellent standard. Breakfasts were what you expect with plenty of fruit, cereals, cooked dishes. More than enough to help yourself and last out the day until an evening meal. Don't be afraid to ask for a latte at breakfast as you are normally only offered tea or coffee. They will do this for you. There are a number of restaurants e.g. the Tabloid which serves light snack type meals but we ended up sharing a plate as you get a good quantity for a good price. The evening buffet in the main restaurant runs out at 25 euros each but you get a large choice of starters, main dishes and sweets. As a light eater this would be no good for me as I would just eat for the sake of eating and regret it later. The quality is excellent. The best meals are on the top floor at the Tempt Asian restaurant which overlooks the harbour. Excellent dining at a fairly reasonable cost considering this is a five star hotel ( possibly not 5 star in this country however ). There is a roof top pool but please check if going in March, April that it is actually open. It was closed when I was there but no warning signs and no water circulation. I brought this to their attention as a few people actually were swimming in it even though it was unlikely to be back washed / chlorinated etc. They did then put up signs to say it was closed. The roof top gives you the best views but it can be windy in March April and actually quite cool because of this even though the sun can be out. I believe May June onwards becomes very oppressive heat and also high humidity which is uncomfortable. There is an indoor pool which is well maintained and pleasant to chill out in. There is a little balcony attached with a circular bed outside. The usual steam, sauna can be found here. I found the place very underused but this was probably because a lot of people staying at this time tend to do sightseeing. Little tips to help you get about - go down to the harbour front and get the water taxi across to Valetta - only 2.6 euro return. It only takes 5 minutes and saves a long journey by road. Be careful if you are driving. Maltese drivers are certifiable. To give way is a sign of weakness and forget indications. Another tip is that from the harbour you can go on a North or South island bus trip. These are open topped buses when you can hop on and hop off - just check the timetables first. You must visit Mdina ( the old capital ). It is stunning. Valetta is also a beautiful place to visit. I would say a week is probably long enough to see the sights. After that you would be looking for things to do. I would definitely stay at the Palace again if I returned. If you feel flush get the hotel to arrange a driver to pick you up from the airport - beautiful cars, no waiting. We had a lovely chap who took us but a bit of racing driver on the way back!! One thing that does need to improve is that there is no way of ordering drinks if you are on the top floor pool on level 9 or the inside pool on level 7. I found myself having to go to my room on the 5th floor and order from there. It also adds 4.5 euros to the bill for anything to be brought up. This is not something that should happen in a supposedly 5 star establishment. Get a phone put in!! Another tip pay for a higher room. Remember you are surrounded by houses and that is all you can see from your room balcony unless you pay for superior rooms - suggest 7th floor upwards and ask for a view of the sea.

Room Tip: Higher room the better. Remember it is in a city and not on the beach. Rooms away from the bells wit...

Just stayed 2 nights in the flavours suite on b&b at the 5 star palace hotel. Staff are most helpful. Room was beautiful and old American theme with a coca cola theme was amazing. We had a tv hid in our bed and even a bar in the room. View from room was amazing. Champagne breakfast was amazing at the tabloid restaurant, they had a very wide choice of hot and cold items. The hotel was even kind enough to give me a free late check out till 2pm. Overall, great stay and would definitely return in a heartbeat. Two big thumbs up.

Room Tip: Spoil yourself and splurge abit on an upgrade to one of their themed suite, well worth it
