Unless you don't mind being stared at while you eat and treated like a five year old when you ask for your bill. At lunchtime we ordered a traditional Maltese pastry. It arrived in the middle of a plate with no garnish. The cappuccino was the smallest I've seen anywhere with more cream than coffee. When finished we waited a long time for our bill. We had to meet some people and didn't want to be late so my wife approached the counter to ask for the bill. She was told to go back to her table and wait because the bill wasn't ready yet. Surely it wouldn't have taken too long to charge her for two coffees and two pastries. Do yourself a favour and walk on.

Ok, It's not fine dining but if you're after good value, a great welcome, and tasty traditional maltese dishes try Cafe Ranieri. It's about half way along Republic Street in the centre of Valletta.

We were nearly put off by the big discount notices outside, but decided to give it a go, and ended up eating there twice in our week in Malta. It's very well patronised by locals, with foreign tourists appearing to be in the minority. There are several maltese specialities on the menu, including lampuki (a local fish) and rabbit stew. I especially enjoyed the rabbit stew! If these don't take your fancy there are various pasta and pizza options too.

We paid about 30 euros for two people for a starter of bruschetta, a bottle of local wine, and a substantial main course each with delicious rosemary potatoes and vegetables. Really excellent value.

Try it!
