“Quality at a reasonable price”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 July 2014

Valletta has never been a fine dining destination, but things are changing and this restaurant is good news for Malta and its visitors. My wife a I had a wonderful mid week dinner at this small but cosy restaurant.

The restaurant is tucked away in one of the side streets in Valletta at the upper end of the city towards the city gate. From street level you have to descend down three steep steps, so if you are a little infirm be prepared - and make sure you duck your head! However, it is well worth the effort. The food is a mix of local Maltese and Mediterranean cuisine. Everything is very tasty, from the bread and dips, to the starters, main courses and desert. The wine list is extensive with wines from Malta and the world.

After the bread and dips, we had for starters; Homemade Ravioli filled with Rabbit, Tomato and Basil Salsa, Peas - perhaps the sauce was a little overwhelming, but very nice and the Risotto with Veal, Parmigiano Reggiano and Oyster Mushroom, simply lovely! For mains we had; Pennoni with Parsnip, Campari Tomatoes, Zucchini, Local Sheep Cheese, done to perfection and the catch of the day, fresh Grouper with potato. We shared a desert which was a Maltese sweet, fig in a flat pastry envelope which is deep fried. This came with delicious ice cream and two cannelloni filed with sweet ricotta and a chocolate cream. This was absolutely wonderful. We also had a large bottle of sparkling mineral water, a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc, Gunn Estate from Marlborough New Zealand and two coffees.

The entire meal came to €80, which we thought was a fair price for this wonderful meal. The service was excellent, the ambiance was delightful. While the restaurant is small, you don't feel over crowded. The only down side was that it was a little hot in the restaurant, the air con doesn't seem up to the task.

Strongly recommend that you book a place as the restaurant was full, mainly with locals mid week. I highly recommend this establishment and can't wait to come back again.

Well done Guze, keep it up!

“Solid may be underselling it somewhat…”

We weren't expecting much in the way of good food in Valletta in the evenings, but this restaurant reinforced our respect for suitably filtered TripAdvisor recommendations. Guze is on a street parallel with the main road and takes a little finding. As it is all indoors, you are not privy to any external views of Valletta, but inside it is cool and cosy - small enough to fill intimate, but not so cramped that you can't have a private conversation.

Service was friendly, food excellent. Menu was short enough to be well cared for, but long enough to cover all tastes. My wife had a cheese souffle to start followed by the fish of the day (can't remember what). I had octopus salad followed by rabbit, as I attempted to ensure that I was sampling 'real' Maltese cuisine. Rabbit had a strong but not overpowering meat sauce, and courses even came with vegetables (unlike some other Mediterranean countries). We also got to try some of the local white wine which was pleasant if not outstanding.

My wife and I eat out quite a lot, and although this was not our best meal in Valletta (that was il Horza), it ran it pretty close (and was better organised). Not massively expensive, so a very safe bet for a pleasant meal.
