This was our third stay at the Phoenicia and this hotel is absolutely perfect!! The staff are really friendly and cannot do enough for you. The rooms are lovely and clean, breakfast on the terrace is great and the choice of food is first class. We absolutely love the gardens and the pool is very relaxing. All in all the Phoenicia is a fantastic hotel and I would highly recommend it.

Enchanted by a first experience a few years ago, I've had the great pleasure to stay once more at the Phoenicia Hotel in Valletta for holidays. And the least that I can say is that I was not desappointed at all by this second experience.

The Phoenicia has many assets which concur to make it the perfect place to stay in Malta: location, charm, great service, delicious and varied breakfast buffet served on the terrace, magnificient garden-promenade leading to a beautifull swimming pool located at the bottom of the walls of the city, ...
The Phoenicia has the charm and elegance that suit so well in an historical city like Valletta.

The hotel is ideally located at the entrance of the old city of Valletta. From there, it is also easy to get to other spots of the island, by land or by sea: the three cities, Sielma, St Julian...

I could not recommend more this hotel !

We were at the Phoenicia 4 years ago and as this stay was wonderful, we were very impatient to go back there... This is what we did from 08/09 until 08/16. Once again, it was such a pleasant experience! The Phoenicia meets my definition of luxury : guests feeling very well (almost at home), in a wonderful (charming) atmosphere with incredible service and excellent breakfast on the terrace...Furthermore, the Phoenicia is perfectly located next to the Valetta city centre and its gardens and swimming pool area are enchanting.
I would like to thank all teams members who were very helpful and friendly, and especially Mister Neville from the front office (he is a Prince), Miss Sharon (a real Pearl at the front office who has very good tips for excellent restaurants and desserts in Valetta... ;-) and Mister Sebastian (incredibly efficient concierge).
In a few words, just try the Phoenicia and I am sure you will join the 'not-yet-existing' Phoenicia fans club.

What a hotel! Ideally situated just outside the city gate and with simply oodles of quiet, understated elegance. The staff we encountered were all charming and incredibly helpful, attentive but never intrusive. Bedrooms are spacious, clean and comfortable and those with views of Marsamxett Harbour are just wonderful. The Palm Court is a splendid room with large and supremely comfortable sofas and arm chairs cleverly arranged so that there are amny opportunities for privacy in a large open space. The room is used for music (a piano one evening, a guitarist the next) and for a weekly cocktail evening for guests. The Club Bar is a beautiful cocktail lounge, its walls decorated with photographs of significant people who have visited and the whole feeling is one of being transported to a different age where civility and service matter.
The Phoenicia's swimming pool is sited at the far end of the hotel's stunning private gardens, a three or four minute walk from the hotel building, very close to the ancient bastion wall of the city. There are plenty of sunloungers and lovely views of the harbour to be had for those who choose well. A real sun trap, this area, well-served by a young staff (although prices at the bar are a little steep).
Breakfast is served on the terrace, overlooking the gardens. A splendid affair it is, too, with virtually everything one might reasonably expect to find available. There are yoghurts, cereals, fruits, pastries, breads, charcuterie, cheeses, juices, water, milk, champagne (yes, honestly!), teas and tisanes, coffee all available in a gorgeously-presented buffet. There is also a full "cooked" buffet and, just in case that wasn't enough for you, a chef is on hand to cook your omelette for you just how you like it.
The hotel has two restaurants which serve dinner: the Pegasus Brasserie is a reasonably-priced restaurant with an interesting if limited menu and a board of daily specials; the more formal fine-dining experience is provided by the Phoenix Restaurant. We enjoyed both: the Pegasus for its informality and particularly for its excellent home-made hamburgers; and the Phoenix for the outstanding cuisine, excellent, if limited, wine list and wonderful service. Carpaccio of swordfish was an unforgettable appetiser, as was foie gras brulee with pistachio brioche followed (equally-unforgettably) by braised grouper and breast of barbary duck, respectively. Wonderful!
The Phoenicia is within fifteen minutes walk of everything and everywhere in Valetta and could hardly be more convenient for visiting this amazing city and the rest of the island. Until this summer it was the case that the entire Malta bus service was run from a terminus organised around the huge Triton fountain outside the hotel: Arriva have now arrived on the islands and the terminus has moved - still within convenient walking distance - but just far enough to make the space outside the hotel less busy and feel pedestrianised. We love it and will certainly return. The hotel would be very special wherever it was situated. Being in Valetta just makes it brilliant.

Wonderful staff with a genuine pride in the hotel. Lee the concierge is great and will help you organise trips. Keith and Charles in the Club Bar make excellent cocktails (worth every penny!). The food in the main Hotel Restaurant was superb - splash out!

The family loved this hotel and would all recommend it.

Stayed for 10 nights, 3 rooms b&b. Went for the classical rooms which are very pleasant, good size, traditional (white walls, wicker etc) and well equipped. Bathroom's are fine if slightly frayed, plastic shower curtain not brillant (especially when left outside the bath tub during a shower....)
Maid service was excellent and lovely crisp cotton sheets, soft towels and all very clean.
Breakfasts were v. good and comprehensive; lots of freshly cooked options, served on the terrace overlooking the gardens with views down to the harbour.
Prices for drinks are typical 5 star so £8 for a cocktail, £4.50 for a pint of local beer.
Bars and lounges are quite grand and very comfortable. Free wifi internet here but charged in rooms.
Pool area is very good, lots of shade and sun loungers( but did get a bit short on a few late afternoons when people start returning from trips etc), good bar/snacks (2 pizzas and two beers is £19). Grand views of the fort walls and harbour. Pool area not kiddy friendly really as the pool, whilst fine (15m long?) doesnt allow for any games and there is a certain dignified air to the whole affair anyway.
Complimentary mini bus to the relatively uncrowded Golden Sands Bay on the other side of the island collects at 9 and bring back at 1pm - be sure to book ina advance at it only seats 12

Bad points? Well nothing much - maybe a silly price of £4 for a 50cl bottle of still water from the room bar (can't drink apparently from the hotel taps). Buy them 50m up the road for 45p....

The only moan really is for the gym/fitness room. Tiny, poor a/c meant it was very hot, lights that switched off if you didnt continously leap in the right spot, just one running machine which was broken for half the holiday, one bicycle, one steps, one weights and set of free weights. Shame really as this was poor and does the hotel a disservice.

In all, one of our favourite hotels, feels a bit like the Mena House in Cairo.

Valletta is a delight, we spent many hours wandering around and seeing the sites. We didnt eat in the evening at the Hotel as there is a wealth of choice in an easy walk. Three restaurants are worth mentioning:
Il Horsa is tiny (30 covers)and the food was really first class (my boned quails stuffed with macadamia nuts was really delicious) and considering the standard, good value at about £22 a main including side dishes. Excellent choice of wines. Clearly they take considerable pride and interest.
Margo's is great fun; they really talk it up on the menus about the ingredients, history and choice, leaving you very interested and hopeful. Their pizzas really are the best we have tasted (and that includes many in Italy).Claude was an excellent host. We went back two more times...
For a brillant view of the Grand Harbour for dinner, De Robertis perched on top of the Castille Hotel with charming staff but be warned, the food was truly dreadful. To give you some idea, same mixed frozen veg with the starter as with the inedible stuffed pork main and an apple pie with lardy pastry and strawberry sauce was so hard my amercian football playing son couldnt cut it! Good luck if you are staying there as I fear we had the half board fixed price menu.

Lastly Air Malta was fine, on time, space ok but food really foul, book a veggie if you really need to eat

In all, a great holiday and nice to be back after 36 years!

Simon and family
