“Good hotel - but not 5*”
Reviewed 25 October 2011

I had a very pleasant stay here - but as my title suggest - the hotel is not a 5* - as stated on Expedia.

My room was a standard one - a good size and very clean. Very nice bathroom. Several criticisms to make - one being that the kettle provided had no socket in the cupboard location to plug it into - niggly - but I don't think that rummaging around to see what lights you can unplug to use a kettle is a good thing - nor is having eventually to plug it in on a floor socket.

I think the hotel may have lived up to it's status 25 years ago - but not now. Why is the central bar in the lobby closed in the evenings? Why was the dying (when we arrived) large floral display in the entrance left to degenerate for a further week?

To sum up - if you book this hotel and get a good price - it's a good deal - great location for ambling into the town and going beyond on public transport. If you pay standard rates for this, you SHOULD be disappointed. I would stay there again because of the location - but not on the expectation of staying in a luxury hotel.

Room Tip: It's not worth paying for a balcony - very small. The higher up the better the view - second fl...

We spent a really enjoyable week here and were really pleased we chose to stay at this hotel. We chose a room without a balcony as the additional cost to have one was not really worth it, as we usually don't spend much time in our room when on holiday anyway. The room and bathroom were a good size and had all the things you would expect. It was very clean thanks to the excellent staff who were all very friendly. In fact all of the staff were very helpfull and extremely polite, from the concierge to the waiters/waitresses, gardeners, etc. The hotel has that old colonial feel and is beautifully and tastfully decorated. There is a large garden which is carefully tended with many flowers, shrubs and trees. There is a good sized pool area with reasonable sized heated pool and a bar for drinks and snacks. Plenty of loungers so I never found it difficult to find one. Also there are a number of little seated areas and balconies which overlook the harbour. The hotel has a main restaraunt with patio area which we used for the fantastic breakfasts (probably the best I have ever had) and also a bistro which we ate at a couple of times and found the food to be really good and of reasonable price. There is a main foyer with a bar in the middle with comfortable sofa and chairs all around, and also a separate bar which leads on to a balcony. Prices I felt were a little high in the bar, but you are paying for the service and ambience which is excellent. The location is perfect, right beside the city walls and close to the bus station where you can get buses to nearly all locations on the island. The buses are very cheap, we got a 1 week pass which allowed as many trips on all buses for just 12 euro, and these run pretty frequently to around 10 pm.
Nearly all the reviews I read on TripAdvisor agree that this is a really great hotel to stay at, but you will get always get a few bad reviews. Take these with a pinch of salt as these usually tell you more about the reviewers than the hotel. These reviewers will always have to find something to complain about it is usually about the cost. I certainly found this hotel to be well worth what we paid which was £900 for a week with breakfast.
We will definitely come back to Malta and will be staying at the Phoenicia.

Stunning art deco hotel just outside the Valetta walls. We had an executive suite which was beautifully furnished. All windows afforded beautiful views over the harbor. Breakfasts and food generally was of the highest standard. The club bar at night was like stepping back into an era of elegant and unobtrusive service and style. From the hotel all of Valetta's sights are at your doorstep. To a person staff offered friendly and competent service, nothing would seem to be too much trouble. This is a truly great hotel and for us a particular highlight in our first visit to Malta which afforded so many highlights.

We consider the Phoenicia Hotel, located just on the edge of the Capital Valletta, a true home from home and return as often as possible. The hotel and staff provide all the comforts of home and a real atmosphere of calm and service which cannot be faulted. The hotel itself is one of the last classic hotels in the Mediteranean with a distinguished history going back the the heady days of Edwardian society. It remains classic and offers a a style of luxury which contemporary 5 star hotels do not match. It is a pleasure to commend the hotel to potential/future guests.

Room Tip: Book either direct or through Malta Direct UK. If you get a balcony with a view of the harbour you w...

We went for our 25th wedding anniversary. Beautiful hotel in a central position for exploring the island. Helpful staff and lovely surroundings. We ate in the Pegasus restaurant twice including our last meal on the island as the rib eye steak and the salmon dishes were excellent. Our room was spotless and we had lovely views from our bedroom window. Would strongly recommend the Phoenicia to couples and groups, although probably not to families with young children.

Room Tip: Choose a room at the back of the hotel if possible as some travellers complained about hearing the b...

We stayed for a week. Great atmosphere, staff very friendly and ambience very traditional. Note that the rooms without balconies seem to be bigger than those with. Friends had balcony but we had the space.

Only small flaw was the Pegasus restaurant which is modern and trendy. We asked were shown to a table in the middle and we asked to sit by the wall. The waitress looked liked she bitten on a lemon and we waited 25 minutes to get a drink, let alone take our order. So eat in thenmain restaurant or one of the bars. Cocktail bar is lovely.

Great pool and gardens and right by the main gate to Valletta itself, and the new bus station.

The hotel is not cheap butbyou do feel youvare in a classy, exclusive joint. We ate out in Valetta most nights as it was cheaper.

Strongly recommend the Phoenicia.
