This hotel is fantastic, perfectly located (just before entering the city walls), spacious rooms, splendid views.

The staff is really friendly and will do anything they can do to accomodate you.

There's really nothing bad to say about this hotel.

However, please note that the room rate was incorrect when doing the check-in. They have fixed it on the check-out bill.

Apart this detail, I strongly recomend it to everyone !

Just had a great time staying at the Phoenicia (8/6-11/6)
This is a unique hotel. Unique because yes it's old, yes it doesn't haven't wi-fi in every room, yes some parts of the hotel are past its best but this is why it's unique. We arrived by hotel arranged cab from the airport, you pull up in front of the hotel and you know you are stepping back into history. The art deco entrance with revolving doors is just class. The main entrance area is stunning. We were checked in very quickly indeed and we had chosen an executive suite with harbour view (room 411) which was very nice (although a few wall scuff marks). The gardens and pool area are simply beautiful and a great oasis from the stifling heat of Valletta. We enjoyed cocktails and champagne in the club bar and had breakfast each day. The breakfast area seemed to cater for all tastes and we had no complaints. Although we didnt have a meal there I overheard a couple who said Pegasus brasserie was very nice. One thing that was unexpected was the Latin dancing taking place on Saturday night. It was very professional with couples who clearly take this seriously. At one point I thought Hercule Poirot was going to walk past as he would have felt at home here. For those who want a faultless no style or faceless corporate hotel then don't stay at the Phoenice go across the road and stay at the concrete block, the Excelsior. However if you want something different, stay in a place with loads of history and a genuine welcome then stay at the Phoenicia - I can't wait to come back!!

Room Tip: Ask for a harbour view otherwise you may be dissapointed also classic rooms looked rather small

This is a five star hotel whose service is second to none. It is a beautiful artdeco hotel set in the capital city of Valletta. The food was wonderfull and service was wonderful. The bus services around Malta were brillant as you could buy a day ticket and just jump on and off the buses all day.

Located within the beautiful walled city of Valletta (Floriana), this is an elegant hotel with plenty of Art Deco influence. It's an impressive hotel located high enough to be seen from a good distance away (helpful when you're driving into Valletta to find it!). Although it's in a prominent postition, the walk from the hotel into the heart of the city is dead flat.
We arrived, having booked a Superior room with balcony and city view. Room 208 that we were given, was a little small, and had tiled floor. Although the balcony was excellent, the view was less than expected, looking over a car park and tennis court/games pitch, with little view of anything worth seeing, and not very Art Deco. We asked the concierge if there was anything else available. We were given two options, one of which was a floor up but with the same view, and another on a different aspect with a much better view. We sacrificed the balcony, but gained a larger room, carpet, a better view and many more Art Deco features. Room 316. Because of the shape of the hotel (like a blunt arrowhead) it's tricky to say which were the best views, but by far and away the best were those at the front of the arrowhead facing towards Manoel island. Odd numbered 111-121, 211-221, 311-321, 411-421. Floors 1 and 2 have balconies. These also face down the grounds of the hotel, towards the pool. The grounds are beautiful and extensive. Facing directly opposite these rooms, inside the chevron of the hotel, are the next best, which is where we finished. Even numbered 112-120, 212-220, 312-320, 412-420, facing towards Sir Paul Boffa Hospital. Google map the hotel to get an idea. The rooms on the outside flank of the arrowhead are the worst, particularly those seemingly facing towards the main city, as the view here is pretty much blocked by the nearest building, and you can really only see the bus terminal. The hotel is really quiet at night. Never heard a sound.
Other than our original room, we found our stay at the Phoenicia almost perfect. The breakfast was good, although a little pricey (14.50 - 18.50 euros, each, per day). Can sit inside or outside. The pool area was great, with fabulous views over the harbour. Really good views. Approximately 90 sun-beds, with a pergola style shady area and several large umbrellas. At it's busiest only half the sun-beds were used. Towels provided. Never once saw anyone "reserve" a sun-bed by putting a towel on it at the crack of dawn, and come back in the afternoon to claim it! It's not that sort of place. Good pool bar, and nice pool. The 100 yard walk from the hotel to the pool is through the gardens, and not at all onerous.
We ate in the Pegasus restaurant in the hotel once, and found it very good. However, the city has plenty of restaurants to choose from. The chamber maids were good, and polite. Everyone speaks great English, as they all do in Malta. Plug sockets standard UK 3 pin. Free wi-fi in the main lounge. Paid broadband in the room. I'm still amazed that a 4 or 5 star hotel anywhere in the world would not offer free wi-fi throughout the whole premises. Something the Phoenicia should think about.
If you like period hotels, with high ceilings, Art Deco features, ceiling fans and plenty of character, this is the place for you. The fact that it's in one of the most incredible cities in the world, makes it even better.

We spent 10 nights here for our honeymoon in May 2012 and had a wonderful experience. The hotel itself is beautiful, the communal areas such as the lounge and restaurant and bar have an art deco feel to them and are well maintained. Our room on the 3rd floor had a lovely view of the harbour and a very comfy bed! It wasn't the largest room we stayed in but the maids were great and we had fruit and flowers in the room on arrival which was a nice touch. Being half board we had breakfast included and I couldn't fault it. I stuffed myself every morning and must have put on half a stone. My new husband is a bit 'fussy' and he was also happy with a bacon buttie every morning, plus they had coffee on tap which pleased us both. The pool is reach by a walk through the gardens and is heated which I loved. Location wise the hotel is a 5 minute walk if that into the heart of Valletta and yet feels very secluded. It's is also very well placed for the bus terminal from where you can vaych a bus to practically anywhere on the island. Finally the staff, particularly the maids and some of the restaurant and pool cafe waiters, couldn't have been more helpful.
I didn;t try the spa so couldn't comment!

Room Tip: 3rd or 4th floors for the views
