“Enjoyable Stay”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 June 2012

This hotel met (almost) all expectations, a wonderful 'old world' ambience, every hotel should be like this.
One minor criticism - the pool area looks a little 'world weary' and is in need of some TLC.

Room Tip: Get a room with a balcony, overlooking the harbour

I spent two nights with my partner at the Phoenicia in order to visit the sights of Valetta prior to spending a week in a farmhouse on Gozo. We had a deluxe room on the second floor overlooking Grand Harbour.

The hotel is set in extensive gardens overlooking Grand Harbour, and has a delightful ambience throughout, spacious public areas, all very well appointed, with old fashioned unobtrusive good service throughout.

Our bedroom had a very comfortable king size bed and top quality cotton linen. Although old fashioned(which added to its charm) it was very well appointed with fluffy cotton bathrobes and towels, and quiet efficient air conditioning. Fresh fruit, local biscuits, and bottled water provided an extra touch. An early evening housekeeping service with fresh toiletries and towels if we wished was a welcome luxury. We chilled a bottle of champagne in the in room mini bar, and drank champagne on our balcony looking out over Grand Harbour.

Breakfast was excellent, served outside on the terrace. There was an extensive buffet, several varieties of home made bread home made preserves and cakes, cold cuts, cheeses, salad, yoghurts, cereals, fresh fruit, and freshly squeezed juices. All was unobtrusively continually replenished There was also an extensive choice of hot dishes cooked to order.

The location is excellent and fits in well with the ambience of Valetta. It is a short stroll (two minutes) from the old city. I would recommend this hotel to anyone who is looking for something a little special when visting Valetta.

Room Tip: Rooms overlooking Grand Harbour have the best sunsets (and also best if you want to avoid being woke...

Gosh, the Phoenicia Hotel is rather a strange place. If it weren't for the 50 suitcases from the just-arrived coach party littering the lobby, you might think you'd washed up in a Graham Greene novel. It seemed a place rather out of time, with breakfasts that tasted like those at boarding school, a huge unused damp ballroom in the basement, ballroom dancing in the main bar in the evening, and a full cast of middle-aged experienced drinkers propping up the Club Bar until late. Add the hotel's last days of the British empire appearance and its setting in Valletta and you wonder whether you have travelled in time as well as space.
Some pluses: the hotel has a fabulous location by the gated entrance to Valletta and right next to the bus station (which means you can easily visit other spots on the island - only E2.60 for an all day bus ticket which is some bargain). The service level is generally high and the concierge was outstanding.
Part of the hotel has a fantastic view of the harbour, but do make sure that you also get a balcony so you can sit out and enjoy it. Ironically this view is now somewhat interrupted by the huge and very ugly modern 5 star hotel built in front of the Phoenicia on the waterfront. The hotel's pool is reached by a long walk down a private garden and also has wonderful views over the harbour, with a small drinks and snack bar and pool towels provided It's a great place to relax after sight-seeing, but it's a bit of a trek back to your room.
Our room was small but nice enough, but in my opinion the bathroom was in need of refurbishment and not of the standard I would expect in a hotel of this rating. Tea and coffee making facilities are provided.
As to Valletta itself - it's interesting for a day and the cathedral is a must-see but after that you'll want to move on. There's little to enjoy there after dark.
Do make sure you visit Mdina while you are there - only 25 minutes by very frequent bus service.

This Victorian hotel is elegant and comfortable. I only gave it 4 stars as we were on floor 2 which still has to be upgraded. I believe floors 3 and 4 are already upgraded so I look forward to our next visit. Main rooms are classy and the club bar takes you back to the days of the Empire!
Very friendly and helpful staff
Breakfasts provided a large choice and even included the veritable kipper!
Hotel just outside main walls of the city and very convenient for public transport.
Rooms are reasonable size and well insulated against external noise.

This hotel is fabulously situated on the edge of Valletta, with easy walking distance to the City gates, coffee shops, restaurants and shops. It is beautifully appointed, and the service is exceptional - one feels at home, and although it is luxurious, it is not too formal.
Excellent breakfasts, and the bedrooms are extremely comfortable. I was there on business, and found the hotel to suit my needs exactly.

This hotel is situated close to Valletta which makes it very convenient for wandering around the old city and it's attractions. It is close to the bus station so is a good base for exploring Malta.I only ate in the restaurant once because I felt that the dishes were over-complicated, if you want something more simple the club bar does offer a small range of interesting food. I loved the selection of old photographs around the club bar walls.I had a room on the first floor which was a bit shabby, but was clean and the beds were very comfortable. The best thing about this hotel is the very best in service and attention to detail. Slight down side, the swimming pool is a long way away from the main building, but the gardens were pleasant to walk through on the way.

I stayed here for 4 nights in May and loved being here. I was on a group tour of the ancient monuments of Malta. This is a big, colonial-period hotel with large public rooms. My room was also large and comfortable, with feather pillows on the bed. The bathroom, while older, was large and worked great. The hotel is just outside the old gate of Malta, currently undergoing renovation, so it's easy to walk straight into the old city. The breakfast is very good. My only complaint was that the night I arrived the dining room was offering only an expensive Malta-food buffet, much too much money for what I felt like eating. There was no a-la- carte that night. And the other restaurant in the hotel is expensive. There is a swimming pool, but it is a very long walk away thru the garden -- I got halfway there and turned around and came back. A friend traveling with me had a less happy experience with his room. He was in the other wing, and there were elevator problems and air-conditioning problems. But my experience was wonderful.
