The hotel is very pleasant indeed. It is ideally situated for sightseeing in Valletta or Malta as a whole. I received a very warm welcome and was given a room upgrade, which was very nice indeed.
My room and en suite bathroom were clean. The bed was very comfortable. The room was quiet and the curtains had blackout lining! The bathroom had shower gel, body lotion and shampoo and there were dressing gowns, trouser press and a safe in the wardrobe. The mini bar was well stocked and there were facilities for making tea and coffee. I had a nice view over the city.
Only one very slight criticism: it would be nice to have somewhere to hang the hand towel near the basin as the towel rail was at the other end of the bathroom.
To give you an idea of distances and times from the Phoenicia Hotel, it takes: 2 minutes to the bus station, 5 minutes to the start of Republic Street, 10 minutes to St John’s Co-Cathedral, 15 minutes to the Grand Master’s Palace, and 25 minutes to Fort St Elmo.
It is easy to walk everywhere to the shops, museums, palaces, cathedral, restaurants and cafés.
From the bus station you can get buses to all over Malta, and the two sightseeing open-top double decked Hop-on Hop-off buses, both stop just outside the hotel.
The main Palm Court Lounge is light, airy and spacious and ideal for sitting, eating a snack or drinking. On the three occasions I sat in the lounge, it was very difficult to catch a barmaid/barman’s attention, and I had to get up and walk to the bar to order.
I didn’t use the Club Bar or the Pegasus Brasserie. I did look at the dinner menu, but it was not what I expected as a brasserie menu to be, and nothing appealed to me.
I had dinner one evening in the Phoenix restaurant but found it to be average. The starter: chicken with ice-berg lettuce and Caesar dressing. The chicken was slightly too thick cut and dry, There was too much Caesar dressing and it was slightly salty. For a main course I ordered the pan fried pork, which was also dry. The Passion fruit parfait for desert was divine! The food was decoratively presented but very disappointing. However, the staff was very attentive and friendly. And the South African Sheraz/Pinotage wine was excellent.
The concierge on duty at the weekend didn’t say good morning on two occasions even thought the second time I stood in front of him and said good morning before asking a question. The concierge who was on duty on the Monday, named Sebastian, was the complete opposite – very polite, friendly, smiley and helpful.
I used the hotel transport to the airport. The driver was dressed in a very smart suit, and drove a gleaming black Mercedez. He was a nice man who was very courteous, polite and friendly. At 20 Euros one way it is a good idea to use this service to or from the airport.
