“A charming hotel ideally sitauted”
Reviewed 2 February 2013

The hotel is very pleasant indeed. It is ideally situated for sightseeing in Valletta or Malta as a whole. I received a very warm welcome and was given a room upgrade, which was very nice indeed.

My room and en suite bathroom were clean. The bed was very comfortable. The room was quiet and the curtains had blackout lining! The bathroom had shower gel, body lotion and shampoo and there were dressing gowns, trouser press and a safe in the wardrobe. The mini bar was well stocked and there were facilities for making tea and coffee. I had a nice view over the city.

Only one very slight criticism: it would be nice to have somewhere to hang the hand towel near the basin as the towel rail was at the other end of the bathroom.

To give you an idea of distances and times from the Phoenicia Hotel, it takes: 2 minutes to the bus station, 5 minutes to the start of Republic Street, 10 minutes to St John’s Co-Cathedral, 15 minutes to the Grand Master’s Palace, and 25 minutes to Fort St Elmo.

It is easy to walk everywhere to the shops, museums, palaces, cathedral, restaurants and cafés.

From the bus station you can get buses to all over Malta, and the two sightseeing open-top double decked Hop-on Hop-off buses, both stop just outside the hotel.

The main Palm Court Lounge is light, airy and spacious and ideal for sitting, eating a snack or drinking. On the three occasions I sat in the lounge, it was very difficult to catch a barmaid/barman’s attention, and I had to get up and walk to the bar to order.

I didn’t use the Club Bar or the Pegasus Brasserie. I did look at the dinner menu, but it was not what I expected as a brasserie menu to be, and nothing appealed to me.

I had dinner one evening in the Phoenix restaurant but found it to be average. The starter: chicken with ice-berg lettuce and Caesar dressing. The chicken was slightly too thick cut and dry, There was too much Caesar dressing and it was slightly salty. For a main course I ordered the pan fried pork, which was also dry. The Passion fruit parfait for desert was divine! The food was decoratively presented but very disappointing. However, the staff was very attentive and friendly. And the South African Sheraz/Pinotage wine was excellent.

The concierge on duty at the weekend didn’t say good morning on two occasions even thought the second time I stood in front of him and said good morning before asking a question. The concierge who was on duty on the Monday, named Sebastian, was the complete opposite – very polite, friendly, smiley and helpful.

I used the hotel transport to the airport. The driver was dressed in a very smart suit, and drove a gleaming black Mercedez. He was a nice man who was very courteous, polite and friendly. At 20 Euros one way it is a good idea to use this service to or from the airport.

Dear Guest

Thank you for choosing to stay at the Phoenicia and for taking the time to write about your stay. I am glad that in most respects you enjoyed your stay with us.

I would also like to point out that we now have a new management team in Food & Beverage and the new chef has already introduced the new menu in the Pegasus which is already very successful and by the middle of March we will introduce the new Phoenix menu.

I hope that we will have the chance to welcome you back to the Phoenicia and we can have your feedback about the changes.

Best Regards

Helena

we were two senior couples, running away for a few days from a Milan damp and cold end of january. it was the first Malta visit for all of us.
We visited the sights on Malta and Gozo, moving conveniently around on public transport buses, which stop just outside the hotel, or walking down Valletta Republic Street, which starts c.a 100 meters away.
We admired the numerous and beautiful reinassance and baroque monuments and we were particularly moved by the 6000 yrs old Hypogeum, in Tarxien.
Worth mentioning that everything is clean and well organised (both inside and outside the hotel) . Everybody helpful and polite and a feeling of excellent personal security.
The food, quite edible, but, unfortunately, more similar to Gb than to Italy.
We may return to see the Forts, the harbour facilities and the military installations of the Order of St.John as well as the beaches.

This was our first stay at the Phoenicia, however, it was by no means our first visit to Malta. My firt trip was in 1981, but my parents first came in 1951. We have had many coffee breaks & afternoon teas in the Phoenocia, indeed my parents had their Golden Wedding Party here in 2002. Now at long last my mum & I have been residents at this first rate venue. Everything was as I had expected of this 5* hotel, and the staff were attentive at all times. This was EXCELLENT value for a winter break, & the hotel's position is unriveled. We walked in the extensive & well appointed gardens - the only minus point here was the swimming pool undergoing seasonal maintainence. The quality of the breakfast was fantastic, with both hot & cold choices. Room service was also very good, with an extensive choice, which we rated higher than that of The Paegasus Bar, where I'm afraid to say I felt the dishes on offer were a little too fancy.

Room Tip: Rooms on the first 2 floors as these have balconies,

Our stay at the Phoenicia will always be a memorable one. The hotel was the centre of our holiday and so much more than we expected. The room was light and airy and extremely comfortable with a lovely en-suite. The staff were quietly, helpful and friendly. We had a wonderful afternoon tea and our evenings were spent sipping cocktails while listening to excellent live music. The morning breakfast provided us with a wide selection of foods including a healthy option that satisfied us for most of the day. I would choose the Phoenicia again without hesitation.

This was our second trip to Malta, but our first stay in Valletta and the Hotel Phoenicia. We were seeking some winter sun and we found it! The hotel is in an excellent position for exploring the island. The hotel arranged our transport to and from the airport in a chauffeur-driven Mercedes. A good start to our holiday and an excellent ending!
We chose an executive harbour view suite - pricey, but very well appointed and large. (We like space!) Wine, fruit, bottled water and some small pastries were complimentary in the suite. The hotel is beautiful, well maintained and very clean. The staff were very professional at all times and met our every need. (We upgraded our original booking and our thanks go to Edwina in reservations for overseeing the changes so efficiently)
One of the highlights of our stay was the local argentine tango group performing one evening in the vast lounge. It was magical and a real treat!
Breakfast was excellent, and even in November we were able to breakfast on the terrace. Wonderful. Every morning we strolled through the lovely gardens of the hotel and sat and admired the harbour views, whilst planning our day.
If you want the best, the Hotel Phoenicia is the place to stay and if we return to Malta, this will be our chosen destination.

Room Tip: Splash out and choose a suite.

We stayed for three nights at the hotel and were impressed with the quality of service. The weather was fairly poor so we spent more time there than we would ordinarily, so the bar and lounge were greatly appreciated. Ate in the Phoenix restaurant on our last night as we had an early flight the next morning but were underwhelmed by the quality of food compared with our previous experiences in the city. However the staff were very attentive and happy to supply us with all the sundries we'd inevitably forgotten, as well as suggesting excursions outside the city on request. I would return here but only at the discounted winter rate which was excellent value.

My husband and I stayed for a week in January. We had a wonderful week, this is our 15th visit and we had a very warm welcome by the staff.

The breakfast was a delight lots of Maltese bread and fresh fruit. We ate in the Pheonix restaurant every night. Do try the rib eye steak it is the best I have ever tasted. Staff are so attentive and helpful. Would not consider staying at any other hotel in Malta.

Room Tip: choose a room with a balcony.
