“Truly Great Malta Experience”
Reviewed 11 May 2014

We enjoyed three weeks, from February 19th to March 12th 2014, of luxury and friendship at this exceptional Art Deco hotel, which is full of character and ambiance. From the moment we arrived until our departure, we were treated to amazing service, staff could not have been more helpful or friendly, nothing was ever too much trouble. There are two restaurants in the hotel, both of which provide a wide range of menus, many ingredients of which were locally sourced. The food was both excellent in flavour and presentation. The day always started with an amazing breakfast, where you were definitely spoilt for choice, so setting you up for the day.

We are already looking forward to our next visit, which we have not yet finalised, so the we can renew friendships already formed.

Room Tip: Higher floors have great views across Valetta

Just returned from a week at the Phoenicia. Very traditional building very close to bus station. Our room had double / double glazed balcony doors that kept the room quiet. Service is good and staff also helpful though we should have used the 'do not disturb' sign as staff frequently seemed to be knocking on our door.

Room Tip: If you are not happy ask to change ASAP

We holidayed here from the 15th to 22nd April 2014 for 7 nights through Thomson on a B&B basis.

The flight was on time and comfortable on a 787 300 series Boeing aircraft. We were bussed from the aircraft to an arrivals hall where we went through passport control very quickly. Once through, our luggage arrived within half an hour and, as we were on an A la Carte holiday, had a taxi transfer to the hotel which took 15 minutes.

Our first impressions of the hotel were really good; it’s an excellent art deco, old world charm hotel - very stylish and chic. The foyer is very simply designed with an amazing glass chandelier where reception, the concierge and shops are located. The main bar/lounge is directly opposite the entrance with the main restaurant behind this through glass doors. Reception was efficient and helpful. We were given our key and taken to our room on the second floor. We had booked a harbour view room and this is exactly what we got.

Our room (215) was medium sized with a large double bed which was very comfortable. The décor was minimalist, painted white, which was light, bright with a classic feel. The furniture was aged Lloyd Loom which was stunning. There was a large wardrobe in the hallway facing the bathroom. It had plenty of hangers and a fitted top shelf. There was minimum draw space and a safe, trouser press, fridge, tea/coffee making facilities with a kettle. The room had two bedside tables, a dressing table which contained a hairdryer, chest of drawers and a circular in Lloyd Loom table. There was a TV on the wall opposite the bed. The fridge was stocked with soft drinks, water and shorts which were checked daily. We did take additional T bags and got a pint of milk from a local shop which we kept in the fridge to supplement what was provided. Drinks from the mini bar were expensive. The balcony, although small, overlooked the harbour and had two chairs and small table. The harbour view supplement is well worth the money, you just do not tire of looking at the view and you can also see the walled city of M’dina in the distance too.

The bathroom was large with a bath and climb in shower, a toilet and bidet. There was a line where wet clothing could be hung. The décor is light in white classic.

Bar
This main Bar was on the ground floor. The décor was art deco and charming. This was a lovely room with ceiling windows which made the room bright and welcoming. Wi-Fi internet is available in the bar/reception area free of charge. We were also able to access the Wi-Fi in our room free of charge but we are not sure if this was being trialled whilst were there and the hotel intends to charge once the trial is complete.

Food and restaurant:
The hotel has two restaurants; the main and an A la Carte. The main dining room was well laid out, bright with lots of mirrors.

The Breakfast buffet was held in the main dining room. There was plenty of choice of both hot and cold food with an egg menu available on request. We couldn’t fault any of the food. Do try the small savoury Maltese speciality pastries at breakfast. They are sublime.
The Pegasus Brasserie is the A la Carte restaurant: we didn’t eat here.

The hotel is located opposite the bus station and a couple of minutes’ walk to the main Valletta gate, a perfect location and base for seeing Malta. At the back of the hotel the gardens stretch down to the main city wall where the pool area is located. The pool area looked comfortable and it was used for early morning swims by many. As we were holidaying in April we only had a couple of days when you could sit outside by the pool and the weather was windy and not warm enough.

The hotel only had a few children staying which suited us perfectly.

The hotel dress code; men wear long trousers for dinner and around the hotel in the evening.

We got a mix of weather during our stay from heavy rain one day to 28 degree sunshine. You will need a kagool or light raincoat and a cardigan in the evening when the temperatures could drop.

The concierge was particularly helpful with tips on things to do and see (such as a quick way down to the harbour via the car park lift directly opposite the hotel).

There is plenty to see and do in Malta and it has a good, cheap local bus service. On top of this there are a couple of open top hop on and off bus tours; one to the North and one to the South. We did the North tour which was 17 Euro’s pp and loved it. List everything you want to see before you go and plan your trips once you arrive. It’s much cheaper to do it yourself but the tour operators do offer a wide range of trips too.

There are plenty of restaurants to choose from in Valletta. We didn’t have a bad meal the whole time we were there. The only problem from our point of view is that the food is so good you should expect to put on more than a few pounds.

We do want to revisit Malta to see what we missed this time and wouldn’t hesitate to stay at the Phoenicia again.

Room Tip: A harbour view is a must and worth the supplement

Had a thoroughly enjoyable evening meal in the Pegasus Brasserie in the Hotel Phoenicia a few days ago. We were staying at another nearby hotel but we fancied a change of venue and menu. Although the hotel appears to be quite formal, the brasserie is less formal but the food was excellent both in flavour and presentation. Coupled with the professional and friendly service from John Paul and his team, we had a very enjoyable evening. The cost for two with a bottle of wine and a bottle of water was 96euros, which we thought was quite reasonable.

First of all the location is fantastic; so near to the town. We had room 313 which had a fantastic view of the harbour. Pool area was good too, really quiet, great pool bar area.

Thanks to the Manager who really went out of his way to help us when the suitcase containing our clothes was mislaid at the airport; a really nice guy.

The bad bits - breakfast was not 5 star standard by any means, and also housekeeping - wasn't overly impressed there either; had to ask for towels, only left one mug for tea and couldn't for the life of us get another.

Overall Had a great time

Dear Jilllian,

I am pleased that there are so many aspects of the hotel that you enjoy and it is therefore particularly disappointing in certain aspects.
Your valuable feedback has been taken on board and action has already been taken to rectify the situation.
I hope this will not deter you from returning to us.

This is a beautiful hotel with plenty of character and style. Free reliable wifi, a very nice pool area, next to bus station and a very short walk to the old city of Valletta. Service was hit and miss. Hit: the receptionist found us in the lounge once our room was available for early check in. Miss: Self service bar service. Well overpriced for room size and quality.

We used the Phoenicia Hotel as our base for a week’s holiday in Malta. The choice was based on the recommendation of a close friend and its proximity to Valletta and the bus station, as we chose not to hire a car. The hotel didn’t disappoint on any of these counts. Its location couldn’t be bettered and it had a classic splendour with all those little extras that make a difference between a four star and five star hotel. The ladies at reception were particularly helpful in researching and booking restaurants for us, and the free wi-fi coverage was a godsend. This was advertised as only available in the public rooms but we seemed to be able to pick it up in our room on the first floor, which was a real boon. The Hotel seems to have a mix of rooms available, including singles: Ours was a double: Not overly large, but perfectly adequate, with a lovely view over Marsamxett Harbour, and a balcony. Sadly the wind, for which Malta seems to be known, often made it too chilly to sit out for long periods. We had breakfast included in our booking which was extensive and catered for all tastes; it most definitely set one up for the day! We ate out at local restaurants most evenings, but did go to the hotel’s “Maltese Evening”. This offered a variety of food and wine, both in unlimited quantities! It was also nice to be invited to a ‘Manager’s Reception’, something that few hotels seem to do these days. We’d certainly recommend the Phoenicia and would have no qualms about staying there again. In truth, however, were we to return, we’d probably opt for a self-catering apartment, as we came back having gained more than a few pounds!
