The Phoenicia Malta
Ranked #3 of 15 Hotels in Valletta
Reviewed 14 July 2009

They don't make hotels like the Phoenecia anymore. The genteel atmosphere was such that were times when we expected Noel Coward or one of the legendary Hollywood the movie stars of yesteryear to enter the magnificent cocktail bar. Many of whom stayed here as did Her Majesty The Queen Elizabeth the second and Sir Winston Churchill. Indeed, many vital decisions affecting the outcome of the Second World War were made in this hotel. Situated at the gates to the the ancient city of Valetta this is a genuine 5 star luxury hotel in the grand style. What makes this hotel exceptional is not just the wonderful building set in 7 acres of landscaped gardens but the wonderful staff. Every member of staff we met genuinely offered a warm welcome. A delightful pool area can be found by walking along a secluded path. Once there you are rewarded by spectacular views of the marina. Our room offered equally spectacular views and was very well appointed. Even more important the bed was one of the most comfortable we have ever used. Each evening we would visit the Phoenix restaurant on the hotel terrace where we enjoyed a series of truly wonderful meals. Despite the obvious luxury of our surroundings we found that the hotel offered excellent value for money. Furthermore, Mr Saviour in The Club cocktail bar was an absolute genius when it came to creating totally authentic drinks. We stayed for only 4 nights but wished we could have stayed longer. This is a perfect hotel for that special romantic break. Well done everyone at the Phoenecia, we will be back.

we had our wedding in the hotel in may09 and could not fault a thing,we got married in the beautiful gardens on a sunny afternoon.afterwars we had a sit down reception around the fountain with 40 guests. The hotel arranged table decorations, flowers, food, music, and anything we needed .Most of our guests stayed in the hotel and all loved the place and the rooms,we didnt want to leave. The food for the wedding was excellent and we paid for a free two and half hour bar in evening and it still cost alot less than england. The staff were friendly and helpful and would sort anything you asked for, nothing was a problem.I would recommend this hotel for weddings or a romantic break,we hope to return oneday.

We have stayed in the Phoenicia on many occasions and are greeted as long-lost friends when we return.
The hotel is a short walk (10 minutes) from the centre of Valletta where there are many attractions that relate the history and traditions of Malta, shops, cafes and restaurants; its location near to the bus terminus is ideal for visiting any other town on the island.
Our room was spacious and clean with a very comfortable bed; there was a wonderful view from the room balcony - the bastions of Valletta down to Marsamxett harbour with Mdina visible in the distance - a view that was just as good at night.
The service in the hotel is very good - the staff are very willing to help.
Breakfast is often on the terrace and is buffet-style and is highly recommended with a large selection of cold food and a separate hot buffet where a chef will prepare omelettes and fried-eggs to order.
There are two restaurants in the hotel - the Phoenix which tends to be "fiine dining" and the Pegasus which is more brasserie style.
A walk throgh well-tended gardens takes you to the pool area with more spectacular views over Marsamxett harbour. The pool area has a bar whre food is served - the staff here are very friendly and the service is very good. The pool area is often quiet, possibly because a large number of the hotel's clients are business people and are not around during the day.
We would commend it to anyone who is planning to a visit to Malta and is looking for a 5-star hotel with traditional values.

We have just returned from a week in Malta staying at The Phoenicia Hotel. This was our first visit to Malta and will hopefully be one of many. The Phoenicia Hotel is an excellent 5 star property, traditional from the outside with a grand entrance but tastefully refurbished inside inkeeping with it's character. It's location is great for those wanting to explore being next to the main bus terminal and entrance to Valletta, but equally for those wanting to relax the pool is a magnet with plenty of comfortable loungers, beautiful views, a poolside cafe and plenty of space. The staff are very friendly and helpful making the atmosphere feel relaxed and welcoming. This is definately a hotel I would recommend.

We enjoy travel and take several breaks each year to new destinations but we have been visiting The Phoenicia regularly each June for many years.......we went first to explore Malta's many historic sights and enjoy its superb climate. We now return each year in order to stay at The Phoenicia - to get away from our hectic working lives and take time to relax and recharge our batteries .
The Phoenicia, which is one of our favourite hotels in the world, is a welcoming five star hotel which has much to offer the discerning traveller seeking to escape to a haven of peace and quiet. It 's location just minutes from the entrance to Valletta, the island's capital which is a world heritage site, and also the main bus station, is ideal for those wanting to explore Malta's rich heritage.
But although the hotel is at the heart of the popular island, once through the hotel's main doors residents find a cool haven of peace and tranqulity. The staff are its biggest asset, always being warm and friendly and ready to help in any way. Many have been at the hotel for a long time, helping to give it a family-run atmosphere and all seem to be proud to work at The Phoenicia which has a special place in Malta's history.
The hotel's Palm Court Lounge and main restaurant have recently been refurbished and both now look even more inviting. The work has been done with imagination, with the impressive new look in keeping with the hotel's colonial character which is one of its biggest charms. The bedrooms on the third and fourth floors have also been tastefully refurbished and among the new features is flat screen televisions. The first and second floors are due to be done this winter.
The hotel's 'secret garden' at the rear is a must see.....it is full of colourful blooms and a joy to explore on a summer's day - or in the evening when it smells fantastic. The pool is at the end of the garden, hidden from the rest of the hotel, and is a real discovery for first time visitors. The pool area is large with shady areas, a bar and poolside cafe. There are plenty of comfortable loungers for sun worshippers and the views of the harbour are fantastic. But most of all it never feels crowded!
We have no hestitation in recommending this superb hotel and am sure new visitors will find it as appealing as we do.

Had a very enjoyable stay at the end of June We stayed on the 3rd floor which has recently been refurbished and the room was lovely.Excellent friendly staff. We hired a car and found travelling not as bad as many people say it is.If you avoid rush hours the roads are very quiet.Do not travel at night as the direction signs are not lit up and it is very difficult to work out what road or turn- off to take.Best restaurant we found was Giannini in Valletta.Book a terrace table for a fantastic view.

Thank you for your review following your recent stay with us. Your positive comments about the staff were greatly appreciated by all.

You are right, driving on the island is not so bad once you get used to it. It is an advantage that we drive on the same side of the road as in the UK !

In closing, I truly hope that we will have the opportunity to welcome you back to the Phoenicia in the future.

We stayed at he Phoenicia on our honeymoon. We emailed the hotel before arriving and found a card from the manager and bottle of sparkling wine in our room on arrival. This was a nice touch and appreciated.

The hotel is elegant. The gardens are beautiful and extensive and the pool has magnificent views over one of the harbours. It was also ideally located for Valletta and for local buses which we used extensively during our stay to get around the island. We'd definitely stay there again.

Thank you for your review and your comments about the hotel. I am glad you enjoyed your stay with us. Our gardeners were overjoyed with your comments about the garden and the beautiful photos you posted. It is their pride and joy and they tend the gardens with a passion so they are very happy when their hard work is appreciated.
