“Great location, good service, some things could be better”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 May 2010

This was my second trip to the Island of Malta and my first time in the Phoenicia.

First of all: the location is excellent. It is just outside the walls of the city of Valletta and opposite the bus stop. Ideal for walking into the old town and for catching any bus to any destination on Malta.

The chek in was fast and friendly, although it was almost midnight when I arrived.

I had a nice newly refurbished room on the third floor. Not all rooms have yet been renovated: a colleague of mine had a room on the first floor and it wasn't nearly as nice as mine. The building in general is English colonial style and quite grand !

Although my room was oriented to the front of the hotel (with bus stop) there was no noise at all.

The breakfast is very good. Excellent choice of both hot and cold meals. It could take you a while before you find the eggs and bacon though, as it is situated in a small side room not easily visible and not at all indicated. Just ask your waiter for directions ;-)

I also had to search a bit to find the swimming pool. It is a nice small pool at the end of the -very long- garden next to the hotel. The garden itself is beautifull and includes a mingolf (ok) and a childrens play ground (very basic).

Some of the points I didn't like. The hotel indicates that there is free internet in the hotel. This is true: there is free wireless access in the lobby. But internet in your room has to be paid for. I really cannot understand why a five star hotel charges you for internet access. In this day and age I consider free internet access in a hotel room to be as normal as free extra pillow. Yet, in my experience, the more stars a hotel has the less likely it is to get free internet: strange....

A second point is the limited number of electrical sockets. it was nice to find both an English style socket and a Continental European style socket in my room, but I would have prefered to have more than just those two ! (think laptop, digital camera, mobile phone, kindle,...)

Anyway, I liked the hotel but it should probably prepare itself a bit more for the new business traveler ;-)

I first went to the Hotel Phoenica last year in March with my two daughters We were not disappointed so this year in April I returned again this time with one of my daughters and my sister. This hotel is one of the best I've stayed at. The staff are most helpful and friendly. the breakfasts are great , plenty to choose from. the rooms are very nicely furnished THe beds are very comfortable. the hotel has very large gardens very well kept and leading to a swimming pool which is very nice.
The night of the firworks display we went to the restaurant de robertis at the top of the castille hotel they had doubled the price of the 3 course meal. the service was abysmal the food diabolical meats very dry and little taste. this was by far the worst meal we have ever tasted. My tip is avoid at all costs.

Five girlfriends sharing 2 rooms over four days for our annual "catching up" trip abroad. The Phoenicia supplied all our needs- lovely rooms and, when we asked to change to a 2-roomed suite so that one of us didn't have to sleep on a put-up ( our own fault with the booking!) the staff were fantastic and moved us at very reasonable extra cost. Hotel in a fabulous location just outside Valletta city walls but easy to wander from there. Hired a car very reasonably to travel to Mdina, Golden Beach, and Gozo amongst others and thoroughly enjoyed the easy exploration of the island despite slightly confusing roadsigns. Cannot recommend island, people and hotel highly enough. Lovely restaurants- Gianninis in Valletta, Otters in Gozo - and the great cocktails and breakfasts at The Phoenicia. Pool area quite stunning.

We went to Malta just to catch up with friends but as an added bonus we enjoyed a fantastic weekend of sightseeing, relaxing on the beach & good restaurants
Nothing was too much trouble for the staff at the Hotel Phoenicia. They organised car hire, restaurant bookings etc. A full and delicious breakfast set us up for the day and the afternoon tea was truly scrumptious. The cocktails in the Club Bar were a good and entertaining start to the evening! Although there was a short walk to the pool you can admire the views and gardens en route. The hotel is in easy walking distance of the sights of Valletta which is a beautiful, historic city. Could not imagine any where better to stay.
Everyone we met were so helpful.Gozo is well worth a visit and we could have spent 2 days there. The citadel in Mdina is spectacular both day and night. Even the maps, which started off being infuriating to read, could not spoil the magic of Malta.

The Phoenicia, a true luxury hotel, is perfectly situated at the city gates of Valletta for exploring this fascinating historic 7,000 year old walled city. I contacted the hotel directly to make my reservation. Josephine Tabone, Reservations Agent, was eager to please and offered the best hotel rates than the other internet competitors. My Classic Plus room had all the amenities you would want in addition to being clean and neat. The hotel is fortunate to house many examples of Maltese artists. The architecture itself is truly a part of the Maltese culture. I am grateful to have spent my solo travel escape here.

Just back from a lovely long weekend staying with friends at the Phoenicia. The hotel
is perfectly placed for walking into elegant Valletta and connecting with transport links for
Malta but is an experience in itself - we loved the art deco ambience and relaxing outdoor pool area. What I think impressed us most of all though was the wonderfully helpful and friendly service from all the staff we met.Concierge Jonathon sorted hire car
restaurants and directions with aplomb : hard to see how we will cope without him! Lorelei? on reception kindly upgraded us to a suite when we realised we needed a little
more room and the guys in the club bar teased and kept us supplied with cocktails with an individual twist .A lovely hotel.

Good points:-
Excellent location
Pretty gardens/pool area
Excellent waitress in Pegasus
Attentive service at breakfast

Not so good points
Reception staff clueless - when we checked in the guy couldn't even tell us what 'half board' covered. No info given on layout of hotel or where to eat. He didn't seem to know if the restaurants would be open. Later wanted to charge us for room/meals that were prepaid.
Oh dear - the food! Fruit/juices/cereal/freshly cooked omlets etc ok at breakfast but the hot buffet was awful.
The choice at dinner was not adequate and the prices ridiculous. All steaks cooked as rare (even when requested 'well done') - really felt sorry for waitress dealing with complaints.
Same veg with every meal and cheap frozen wedges/chips - very poor quality.

This hotel is not 5 star - it is trading on its past reputation. The rooms are small with no comfortable seating area and if you have a refurbished room you do not have balcony. The bathrooms are scruffy (in both sorts of room). The tea/coffee facilities are good but it would have been nice to have some complimentary water (a typical 5 star touch?) as you cant drink the tapwater.
