“Simple But Peaceful”

St. Paul's Anglican Pro-Cathedral
Ranked #29 of 103 things to do in Valletta
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 6 June 2013

This is not a large church, nor is it elaborate like so many of the churches we visited in Valletta or elsewhere in Europe. However it's simple and peaceful atmosphere was beautiful onto itself. We particularly liked the Merchant Marine Prayer that was on display in the church.

I enjoyed this church visit, plain and simple in comparison with the way ott majority of churches we visited on the Island, It felt as if I was going back in time. It was a remarkably peaceful place to be in, very few tourists so a bit of a heavan.

This felt like an outpost of home and therefore comfortable. However after the flamboyant and amazing interiors of most of the important Catholic Churches on the island, it seemed rather plain and dull.

On approaching the neo-classical façade it is possible to see the top of the massive steeple just emerging above the parapet. It looked lovely against the clear blue sky. The steeple is actually best viewed and appreciated from the nearby waterfront.

This is a very pleasing interior, plain and non-ornate. It is so dissimilar to all the other churches we visited in Malta.

We visited on a Sunday morning as preparations were underway for the service, being readied by a small number of devotees. So it was very quiet and we had no difficulty in walking around and taking a few photos. The simple columns along the sides are a pleasant contrast with the more complex pillars in the aisles. The latter separate the worshippers from the choir and also add impressive depth with the altar seeming to be off in the distance.

On the walls are plaques commemorating various worthies. Numerous flags, both National and other, are suspended in the vicinity of the inscriptions.

We really liked this small unostentacious cathedral that has served Valletta's Anglican worshippers for many years. There was a friendly lady volunteer on duty who was only too willing to answer questions and show us points of interest. It is much less grand than St John's cathedral and much less busy which suited us! I wish we had had time to return for a service. I enjoyed sitting for a while for some peaceful contemplation.
