“A must stay”
Reviewed 3 November 2008

My friend and I stayed at Castille for 3 nights. Before our trip, I booked a twin room via e-mail and ask for a room with good view. Honestly, we still think our room ( room 25) is the best room of the hotel, large balcony with magnificent views. The hotel staffs are really friendly, the food (except breakfast, they don't provide much of variety) on rooftop as well as La Cave are very nice too. if there is anything I don't like, that would be lack of the power socket. They just don't have enough sockets in the room and I have to pull out the lamp power. We enjoyed the room a lot. We have a little problem to locate the hotel by drive, which is extremely not recommanded. I hope you would have better luck.

  • Liked — view from the room, rooftop view, LaCave pizza
  • Disliked — not enough power socket, no internet

Location, location, location! This hotel is in the perfect spot to explore Valletta. Everything is in walking distance and close. We had the best room in the house, so book Room No 25 - it fronts Castille Square and has the largest balcony (perfect for drying clothes without them being visible from the street). Rooms are clean, quite adequate and comfortable. The staff are lovely and helpful. We only had breakfasts there (no cooked breakies) so do not know what the main meals are like. We prefered to eat where the locals eat, in the small restuarants of the town. It has a lovely atmosphere, and many clients there were on repeat visits - which says a lot. There are excellent views of the Grand Harbour from the 5th Floor restuarant. Burger King is very close for free wifi! Highly recommended.

Good

+ Excellent central location with the bus terminal a short walk from your front door.
+ Friendly helpful staff
+ Breakfast is served on a very nice roof top terrace
+ Very nice pizza resturant near by under ground.

Bad

+ VERY Run down accommodation - tatty carpets, dark dingy rooms.

+ Best suited for short stays if you want to take advantage of the location. If you’re planning to stay here exclusively you will be very disappointed.

+ Breakfast pretty bad and I found plenty of bugs in the orange juice etc. Would have preferred something more basic but fresher.

Overall this is a very reasonably priced and exceptionally central and convenient base for exploration of Malta in general and Valletta in particular, with spectacular views over Grand Harbour from its top floor restaurant/breakfast room. A few steps from the Upper Barrakka Gardens and also adjacent to the Auberge de Castille (now the Maltese Prime Minister's Offices), close to both the main bus station and a secure, moderately priced 24-hour parking garage, with a reasonable quantity of on-street parking also on the hill leading down from Castille Square, it is convenient whether you are sightseeing by foot, car or bus. The staff are exceptionally friendly and courteous, and there is an excellent pizza/pasta restaurant in its atmospheric cellar/basement, and a ground-floor coffee shop in addition to the restaurant. Dinners are OK (fairly standard Maltese food -- Malta is not really the place for fine dining), breakfasts are very basic and could be improved, and the rooms, while clean, are getting a little tired (and single rooms mean single beds): the telephone in mine didn't seem to be working. But these minor signs of age are par for the course in an older mid-range European hotel (it is after all in a 16th century Baroque town house), and the atmosphere, location and front-desk staff make up for a lot. I stayed here for a week very contentedly and would certainly use it again if I return to Malta. As for the person who complained about encountering a cock-roach in his bath -- welcome to Southern Europe: you're lucky it wasn't a lizard.

  • Liked — Location and outstandingly amiable staff
  • Disliked — Slightly ttired single room, but nothing to complain about: still clean and good value for money
