Saluting Battery

Recommended length of visit: <1 hour
Owner description: The Saluting Battery is one of Malta's most vibrant visitor attractions where history is brought to life daily! Located high along Valletta's eastern historic ramparts it enjoys unrivalled spectacular views of the Grand Harbour and its surrounding fortified towns. It is also perhaps the oldest saluting battery still in operation anywhere in the world. Here one can see a fully restored gun powder magazine, an artillery side-arm store, a handsome collection of original muzzle-loading artillery , ammunition and equipment and get a close-look at the saluting guns. The battery is equipped with audio-guides but guided torus in English are also available three times a day at 11.00, 12.30 And 15.00Hrs.

“Go for the tour! ”

Saw the 4pm tour and sunset gun firing. It's a must! Gerry is a fantastic host, knowledgeable and amuzing (made me laugh anyway, thanks Gerry! ) and if you've never seen a gun powder gun fired, it's quite a sight (and sound! ). Live the history.

“Something different”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 August 2014

Make sure that you are a little before 12:00 at the Saluting Battery in Valetta. It’s part of the the Upper Barrakka Gardens.
If you go down the stairs you can enter the museum for a small fee. This is rewarding since the view is way better that from the gardens.
And if you are in the museum, join the tour given by Gerry Clifton. He will tell a lot about the cannons, the history, the museum and Malta in general. Although he is British, he skillfully hides that with his pride and enthusiasm about the Saluting.

“Good visit”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 August 2014

Best time to visit is when the cannons are to be fired....great experience . Especially good value when included in the Heritage Pass for families which covers this attraction, the Lascaris War Rooms, Malta at War Museum and Fort Rinella.

“Twice daily cannon firing is fun, great views”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 August 2014

Don't miss one of the ceremonial twice-daily cannon firings. Amazing views do the Harbour. Pleasant and serene place to watch people or just relax. If you take the ferry, you get a free elevator ride to the Upper Gardens. Don't forget!

“worth the walk”

The views from the balcony are worth a visit alone.
Lots of people go to see this and the gardens are lovely, there is a cafe/restuarant in very pleasant gardens with superb views over the harbour.
