“A faint shadow of it's former self”
Reviewed 31 December 2012

It was "The Gut" Now just another street with one new bar showing early raunchy moves. A couple of the old bar signs still hanging. Just!!. In it's heyday it was something you had to see to believe. Happy daze.

“A street with rich history but in desperate need of some TLC”
Reviewed 7 November 2012

This street, whose name means "Narrow Street" (which title it truly desrves), has one of the most colourful histories in Valletta, having been once littered with pubs and locales visited by sailors during Malta's maritime heyday. It also acquired a reputation for being "a place of lose morals" during this time. With less sailors visiting, the places closed down over time and the street became neglected, leaving behind a number of abandoned buildings. A push in recent years has led to the opening of new locales and the hosting of one-off events in some of the old buildings. The place is beginning to look better thanks to this new lease of life, although there is still a long way to go to transform it into a life-centre again.

“It's part of the heritage as well”
Reviewed 6 November 2012

On the face of it a very narrow straight street running parallel to the main streets. Perhaps not much to look at. It is as much of Malta's heritage as the more well known attractions associated with the Knights. It was the hotspot, quite literally, of the nightlife of Valletta when the navies where in town, British and American. Brothels, bars, military police, jazz clubs.. indeed this is where jazz was introduced to Malta.
Also known as the "Gut", for over 150 years this was both the disreputable and most popular part of Valletta. From the 1970s however the street slowly and inexorably became derelict.
Wander down it now. There are still images of the past in fading signs. Look up to the upper stories. Imagine the past. Some bars are slowly re-opening; some restaurants are opening .. all worth trying. A cultural centre project is underway in one of the derelict buildings. Lawyers have renovated a building for their up-market offices.
Valletta is a marvellous city behind its fortifications. The main shopping streets are becoming a runway for the cruise ship groups. Look closely off the main streets and you see the decay, smell the damp. Strait Street requires bringing back into life. Visit it to glimpse its past; frequent the bars and restuarants to help bring it back into life.

“Memories”
Reviewed 11 October 2012

I was there in 1963/64 when in the forces. All the bars etc have gone but still one or two signs are still there. I felt I could almost see the ghosts and hear the noises of the sixties.
