We stayed for just one night at the start of our trip, and were relieved not to be coming back on our return to Valletta later on in our trip. It's not hideous, but it's so far from a 5* star hotel it's almost comical. Architecturally the photos are deceptive; it really looks like a cruise ship collided with the bastion wall - vast acres of unrelenting concrete and black glass - and in between a pool/entertainment area that looks like a tired Vegas hand-me-down. Yes maybe it's grand but in a completely tasteless way. The desk staff were efficient but aloof and slightly condescending in a way that truly 5* star hotel staff would never be.
Our room was large but with a triple volume ceiling almost too cavernous, and the bathroom would probably be fine in an ageing Holiday Inn, but here just not well enough appointed or maintained. The process of acquiring a pool towel makes you feel like the hotel suspects you likely of petty theft. Hotel decor is obviously highly subjective but it's all just a taste-free zone - tacky, cheap, over-the-top - it's trying to be grand, but it misses the mark by a wide margin.
So while there was nothing disastrous about our short stay, there was really none of the tactile delight or sumptuous experience that should be part and parcel of a high-end hotel. Disappointing, but fortunately short-lived.
