“Inconsistent which is a shame”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 13 May 2012

As evidenced by the varied reviews it appears that this hotel is rather hit and miss.

My first 'standard' room was closer to a prison cell! Situated on the entrance level it had a 'land view'. This meant a high window which looked out onto a 2m high wall just a meter or so from the window, with broken pipes hanging off it. The wall prevented any light from coming in and the lighting in the room was inadequate to compensate so it was dark and depressing, the bathroom was basic and dingy. This is not what you'd expect from a 5* or even 4* hotel.

On requesting the possibility of transfer I was informed that I'd have to pay but eventually was given a 'complimentary upgrade' to a room that was 6m away from a 20-30m wall, overlooking what can only be described as a waste tank. One of the lights and the hairdryer were broken (a bit dangerous really), the decor overall needs updating to be considered 5*. On the upside it's a big, pleasant room and a comfy bed. The lesson is probably to book a 'sea view' room to avoid disappointment, avoid 6th floor 'land view' at all costs.

The front desk service was exceptional particularly Sherlyn who was professional to the core and gave a complete 5* service doing everything she could to make my stay comfortable and enjoyable. The Bar manager however was exceptionally rude to the point of being insulting and ended up arguing with me at the front desk, I was appalled.

The pool is lovely, the beach area is as reported previously, the breakfast is very good, rooms are clean with water provided and on the 2nd floor I had good wifi service. On the whole the staff were very professional and friendly.

On balance this could have been a very good experience and in fairness they tried to assist when I reported that it wasn't but it depends on your luck on the day .... Good luck!!

Room Tip: Avoid 6th floor 'land view'.

Wonderful friendly staff, food choices, general excellence.

Carpet in room shows it's wear, but, the beggest negative is almost non-existant
Wi-Fi in rooms.

Room Tip: The harbor view rooms are nice.

A nice bit of five star luxury on the small island of Malta. Staff were extremely friendly, willing to help but not too intrusive into your private space. Stunning surroundings and rooms nicely done out. Although the air conditioning didn't seem to work, it just wasn't cooling the room. Probably not too much of an issue in April but in the midst of summer it would be. Breakfast was standard fayre, not much to say about that. The bar looking over the harbour was very nice to enjoy a drink (either Malta's own admittedly very good wine, or the more refined from South Africa) before going out for the evening. All in all a very nice stay and would be my first choice of hotel should I return to Valletta.

Pros:
- 24 hour lobby bar
- good housekeeping, clean rooms ..
- good restaurants
- generally all around good service from staff especially F&B
- pool with great view but no service and no umbrellas for shade
- comfortable beds

Cons
- Transport desk not open 24 hours and they can't even arrange a local taxi! They will only arrange hotel courtesy cars. We ended up walking up the hill to the bus depot and found waiting taxis. Not acceptable at all.
- smoking on balconies so if your balcony door is open you can smell smoke and hear your neighbors conversations.
- air condition that is not cool, blows hot air.
- some rooms have a view of a wall from their balcony charging same price as other rooms!
- pretty isolated hotel where you need to walk at least 15-20 minutes to Valetta, although great view of Valetta harbour
- very poor Internet connection from rooms
- executive lounge that only opens for breakfast from 7.30am with limited buffet, cocktail hour from 6-7pm with just a tray of canapés, and an always empty executive lounge desk. No separate executive check in as listed. Total waste of €33 a day.
- extremely hot scalding water in bathroom with some taps turning right for hot and some left for hot which can be confusing.

Room Tip: Stay clear of lower floor rooms on 1st floor with walls as your view. Request upper floors - from 8t...

This was our second stay at the Grand Hotel Excelsior, five year's apart! In those 5 years whilst the furnishings and space remain 5 star I'm afraid that in my opinion the overall general feeling is more 4 star. Arriving past midnight to find one person on Reception, no porter available and a somewhat off-hand "What do you want" from the chap on Reception didn't start things off too well. He was overloaded, there was a conference (Pyrotechnics I believe) taking place with several hundre attendees, many groups demanding that the poor fellow order taxis. The lesson to be learned is that if one is staying here then ensure there isn't a massive conference on at the same time!
In addition I would suggest that it is not an ideal place to stay if one has difficulty climbing.

Room Tip: Higher floors with sea view

A really super hotel - good facilities, very pleasant staff, really great food, views over the harbour from the restaurants etc. Very convenient for the bus station and central Valletta. We were a party of four and were very impressed by this hotel.

Grand Hotel Excelsior is an excellent hotel.

Our room was beautiful with a great view, spacious and very comfortable. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. Their breakfast was nicely done every morning and if you needed any information on places to go or things to do, they always had suggestions from their experiences.

This hotel played a great part in making our stay in Malta a great Holiday. It is a beautiful hotel with a lot of wonderful amentities - we recommend it highly!
