Excelsior Grand Hotel

Certificate of Excellence

This was hotel #2 on our honeymoon to Malta (first was InterContinental Saint Julian). POSSIBLY THE BEST HOTEL I HAVE EVER STAYED IN!

True 5 star hotel. It's beautiful, well taken care of, has great facilities, great rooms, very good food and the service is just top notch! The view from the pool is breathtaking also.

Keep in mind that if (like me and my wife) you prefer to walk instead of driving or taking a taxi you are looking at many stairs going up just to get out of the hotel onto the street. So if you have any kind of mobility issues or bad knees etc you may want to use the hotel's shuttle or call a taxi.

The service in the hotel is absolutely incredible, the front desk staff is friendly and very helpful. When checking out and going to the airport don't bother with a taxi, because the hotel shuttle will get you there for practically the same price in new, air-conditioned vehicles.

Our room was amazing! clean, well decorated and pretty spacious. The swimming pool and beach area is always clean, with lots of poolside chairs and 2 bars.

Overall our stay was quite great and Valletta is a beautiful city with lots of history.

If I was to write anything negative at all about this place is that there is really no bar/night life scene near by. So if you're looking for that, paceville in Saint Julian is a better fit. However, if you are looking for 5 star luxury, this is it!

I had to leave 2 days early and told them 24 hours in advance, they informed me they would charge me the full booked amount. When I complained they said it was policy. When I told them I would put a note on the trip advisor I got a call from a manager who told me that the booking agent would charge the hotel the full amount, we have no choice. The booking agent sent an email to the hotel and advised them that they would not charge the full amount. When I checked out I was pleased to see they charged the correct amount, But when I checked my Visa statement they put through a second unauthorized charge for the other 2 days. Maybe it is common that they have visitors that decide to leave early? Understandable the hotel is not conveniently located for people who have trouble walking, the Hotel rooms are in need of renovation, old towels, old bedding, torn headboard, and filthy carpets. The mini bar is kept empty and you need to place an order to get it filled. They couldn't print off a boarding pass and when I went to the business center the internet was too slow to access the airline site and I was informed if I printed something I would be charged. It is true they reserve a set fee on your card in case you want to use the spa or other charges, so it is apparant they don't trust you, probably because in this case I couldn't trust them with my credit card. I must say the views are wonderful, but when I and my business colleagues return we won't be staying there so in the end it will be their loss, my booking agent will also be informed. Mr. Manager look up the meaning of hospitality! However, the people of Malta are lovely people, the city is beautiful so travellers don't let this review discourage you from visiting this truly amazing, wonderful place!

Really rare to get such a good atmospheric 5-star hotel so close to the centre for touring. The staff were top-notch in organising and getting things done for us, with the friendly personal touch.

We took the opportunity to hire a hotel driver for the day to get us around the island - of course more expensive than a hire car but much less hassle ... and he gave us a great running commentary and suggested a couple of sights / viewpoints we wouldn't otherwise have captured!

Room Tip: Lots of rooms with great harbour views are available - however we didn't bother as we didn't...

Modern and new four star beats this kinda old five stars 6-0.

However this hotel has many plusses - big pools, private beach, good breakfast, nice lobby etc etc. And some irritating features as unstable internet, extra costs on sauna and room quality. Nothing was wrong with the size of the room but the renovation time should come soon.... especially to bathroom area.

Location is ok - at the walls of Valletta, 5mins walk to bus centrum / old city. Walk is up to the hill though. Very good service everywhere.

Little renovation would make this perfect 5 star.

We choose Excelsior grand Hotel as one of the few 5 stars in Malta. As this was not only our first stay in La Valetta buit also a very short stay, we were happy to be close to the city. This was very convenient.
Our stay nevertheless started badly. The hotel forgot to send the prebooked car and driver at the airport. By chance, another driver from the hotel, waiting for some students, was able to bring us to the hotel in an old and dirthy van. The driver was nice and started explaining about Malta on our way to the hotel. Once we arrived, the hotel team apologised and we were not charged for this transportation. We even received a complementary bottle of local wine from the Front Office team by way of apology. This was very well appreciated.
Our room was clear and of a good size. Big balcony overviewing the harbour.
However, for a 5 stars hotel, we were shocked by the numerous stains and marks on the carpets and the scratches on the leather parts of the bedhead. Similarly, some towels were either very weared or sometimes with holes and tears (especially at the SPA).
We had breakfast every day. The buffet was excellent. It was a pity that wa had to pay a supplement for a hot chocolate!!!
On Sat night, we choose to have dinner at the Admirals Landing Brasserie. We choose for the International Buffet and it was very nice. We were disappointed by the waiter who only filled the 2 first glasses and after, left it to us to do. Similarely, we asked many times for the bill and at the end, we went ourself to the cashier in order to sign the bill.
The last day we enjoyed an very nice couple's massage. The therapists were nice and really professional. However, in the massage room, we had no other space than a kind of bar stool to put our clothes and nothing else than the corner of a small table to put our glasses, watches, jewelery etc...
Despite the fact that we spend 2 nice days in Malta, I have to say that this hotel wasn't always 5 star worth. To many details still need to be improved or even corrected.

We seldom choose a five star hotel but we took advantage of a great off season deal to have a hotel near the city centre. Valletta is a short walk (up a lot of steps) and through the bus station which itself gives access to the whole of Malta and Gozo. For those with more funds the hotel runs its own tours.
We had a 'superior' room without harbour view. The room was spacious with a balcony which did in fact have a partial view of the harbour. Housekeeping service was excellent with nice extra touches such as a carnation in the bathroom and the occasional gift chocolate.
The breakfast buffet was excellent - I have not seen better - with attractive views from the tables over the harbour to Sliema. The restaurant was outside our budget for everyday eating but one night we gave it a try and had an excellent three course buffet dinner with a bottle of good local wine with a bill for two of Euros 85.
We were there out of season so the staff were not overstretched but they all seemed very well trained and went out of their way to help with every percieved need - to a degree I have not previously experienced.
