“Not a 5* Hotel”
Reviewed 7 January 2014

The hotel claims to be a 5* Hotel, but unfortunately it is far from it. If you are used to this level of quality and service then you will be severely disappointed. The plus point is the location (close to Valetta), but unfortunately there are lots of negative points. The room had many bad stains on the carpet, the bathroom was in need of renovation (poor finish, missing fittings, no pressure for the shower making it unusable) and a loud aircon unit that didn't cool - so will be a problem in Summer. The hotel also booked "special events" over Christmas and the New Year and was then over-run with over-night guests. It could not cope with the number of people (specifically at breakfast), so I suspect this will be the same at the height of summer. Breakfast variety was good, although food often cold and of mediocre quality. Hotel bar food/drink prices are a good 50% above everywhere else (as is generally is the case at a hotel), but the good location means you can choose to eat/drink elsewhere.

Room Tip: I would suggest a room above the 6th floor (reception level) and facing the rear of the hotel.

Dear Jay

Whilst thanking you for the feedback, it is disappointing to note that we did not meet your expectations. Kindly note that the hotel is currently refurbishing all of its rooms including recarpeting and change of furniture. Unfortunately such a programme can only be done during the low season. With regards the air conditioning please note that the problem must have been related to your own unit as we did not have any similar issues during the Christmas period. I am sure that if our Maintenance team were aware of the problem they would have helped with the matter.

During the summer months we open both restaurants for breakfast in order to eliminate any queuing time. Unfortunately during the Christmas period especially on Christmas and New Year's day, guests tend to go for breakfast very late during the day and at the same time.

May we take this opportunity to wish you and your family a Prosperous New Year and hope that we will have the opportunity to welcome you again in the near future.

Kind regards
Brian

Aside from the price perhaps, this hotel will offer you anything you could possibly wish for.

The location is perfect, close to the centre and a view of the bay. The rooms are exceptional, clean, luxurious and spacious. The hotel has one of the best breakfast buffets I've ever seen, the staff is friendly and the fitness room and swimming pools are amazing.

Although it's not cheap, I would absolutely love to stay here again

Room Tip: Even though the rooms overlooking the bay obviously have the best view, the rooms that overlook the...

We have visited Malta on many occasions and stopped in supposedly higher rated and reviewed hotels, overlooking this place because of that. But for us this has been an amazing stay surpassing other hotels in Valletta and nearby Sliema..

We went for the New Year celebrations and the city location of the hotel for this purpose was amazing. On confirming our booking we had an e mail from the Guest relations manager who thanked us for our booking and offered to assist us with whatever we required to make our stay complete.

She also advised us by e mail at that point that the hotel functions were fully booked for the New Year celebrations and that we should consider booking somewhere in the town as a matter of importance. She also suggested several establishments which she took the trouble to find out if they had vacancies available for us.

On arrival we were very impressed with the magnificent reception area and the smartly uniformed doorman welcomed us into the hotel. The Guest relations manager was informed of our arrival and she came out and welcomed us personally. We checked in and were escorted by a bell boy who carried our luggage to the room for us and gave us a quick resume of the facilities and controls of the air conditioning. We stopped in a Deluxe Double room with full sea view and terrace. It was amazing and the view was spectacular. Massive comfortable bed, and a beautiful bathroom. We need not have taken any toiletries with us everything but hair gel was provided including tooth paste and brush, shaving kit and an umbrella, bath robe and slippers. in the room was a lovely bottle of red wine and chocolates with a welcome note.

During our stay we both had a treatment at the Spa which was very good.Staff were friendly and very professional. If I was to make an observation, it would be that it lacked a little ambiance due to the air not being filled with beautiful scents of oils and aromatic therapies like you would normally get in these places. Otherwise, clean comfortable and very, very relaxing.

Breakfast was good, but at the busy times it appeared to be a little overwhelmed with the number of people awaiting to be seated and there was a considerable wait for some of the later arrivals for this. Shame, because they could have catered by using empty overflow dining halls which were nearby.

In short, lovely place, lovely people and I would definitely return myself.

Room Tip: The room we had was fabulous on level 5 with a full sea view and balcony

A wonderful hotel with very friendly and courteous staff. We brought in the New Year here and had a Gala buffet dinner at the Admiral. The show in the lobby was excellent but nobody introduced the troupe!!
The dinner spread was superb with an extensive range of dishes to choose from. However, the mains were a little disappointing - the salmon was. It was overcooked and almost cold. Pastry looses out when left to get cold. The Black Angus steak was the best dish. The vegetables tasted on the poor side once again overcooked. Desserts were stupendous.
The pianist was very good but kept disappearing every so often - in fact he left at 11:45pm and we thought that there was going to be no countdown. We went one level below to the disco and what an experience! The music was rubbish and the DJ even worst. His countdown came at 00:06! 2 minutes before midnight he asked the audience the time and when everyone told him the time, he said that that was alright and he would play another record and then do the countdown!!! What a farce. The fireworks outside had almost finished by then.
One would expect much better organisation from a 5 star.

There are many positive things to say about our short stay in the hotel.
The staff in the Harbour View Bar, the rooms (965, 964),the views from the hotel, the proximity to Valletta to name the main ones.
But, I am sorry to say that this establishment is simply not the 5 star Hotel it aspires to be.
At busy times in the day, breakfast ,dinner and post dinner times in the bars, the service is SO slow! 45 minutes wait for three drinks , queues for tables at both breakfast and dinner , not enough chairs in the bar all contribute to a somewhat negative experience.
The food from the buffet was cold on our first night, we had decided to not complain , but to give the hotel the benefit of the doubt. The waitress asked if all was ok with our meal, we said it was rather cold. She then informed the restaurant manager who approached our table and was somewhat put out that we should comment negatively! Hardy good customer care.
No towels on the pool area, being told off by " housekeeping" when one asked for a towel, somewhat took the shine off our New year day swim!
Never mind , we will put it all down to experience.
Not a case of " live the grand life" to quote the hotel strap line, more an adequate stay!
May be an idea for the senior managers of the grand hotel excelsior to visit other 5 star establishments on a fact finding trip, and learn!

Room Tip: Floor nine with sea view

We stayed with friends for a long weekend in September and had really good break.
The hotel is located just outside the city gate and a short walk down the hill will bring you to marsamxett harbour where you have a number of restaurants and the ferry to sliema.
When booking, we opted for a full sea view room and the view from the terrace was definitely worth it. As you are on one of the top floors you get a view of the entire harbour and then out to sea. Even better when the air show is on and the red arrows fly down the harbour and over the hotel.
We made maximum use of the good sized lagoon pool and also the private beach and frequented the pool side restaurant for lunch (which was affordable).
The quality of finish to the hotel is high end and the staff are professional and polite.
We intend to return next year and would recommend this hotel for an autumn weekend break.
Warmth, Sunshine, Good Food and Affordable Luxury !
Enjoy.

I have been in this hotel between Chrismas 2013 and New Year 2014. The hotel is large, with a beautiful view on the harbour from all the lounges for breakfast, drinks and lunch/dinner. People at the reception desk and everywhere else are attentive to your wishes. What is difficult in the buffet breakfast is to make his choice among all possibilities. After such a breakfast, it is easy to skip the lunch. Reserve your breakfast together with your room otherwise it will be a bit more expensive. Nevertheless, if you decide to eat at noon, the salads are very tasty for about 10/12€. The buffet dinner is also offering a very large choice for 30€.
The rooms are very large, clear and comfortable.
The hotel is nicely located at a 5 mn walking distance from the gate of the old city of Valletta.

Room Tip: Choose a room at the 10th floor to have a better view. You may also choose the sea side.
