the good out-balanced the "bad" - but nothing was really "bad". the hotel itself and amenities were top notch. our room had a wonderful balcony and a great view of the harbor. the price was very reasonable.

the downsides are mainly two: you can't really walk to downtown, because of steep hills and cabs are not plentiful. The electric taxi was great!
the other downside was the restaurant - they really want you to do the buffet rather than from the menu - and the buffet was expensive! and not great. the breakfast buffet was better than the dinner buffet, but still expensive. and the service was a little slow, especially from the menu.

if we came back to Malta, we'd probably get a hotel more convenient to downtown

Dear cookienj,

Many thanks for choosing the Grand Hotel Excelsior for your stay and also sharing your experience with other Trip Advisor users.

With regards the hotel's location please note that we are only a two minute walk from Valletta and we also offer a complimentary taxi transfer at 10am and 6pm. In order to ensure an efficient and customer friendly taxi service the hotel operates its own private chauffer service and guests can book their transfers and even personalised tours through our Taxi desk located in the hotel's lobby.

It is very unfortunate that you got the impression that our Restaurant team members wanted to opt for the buffet rather than the a la carte menu. May I take the opportunity to point out that in these last 12 months, our new Executive Chef introduced a new a la carte menu and has also won a number of culinary awards. I do hope that we will have the opportunity to host you again in the very near future and also experience our a la carte cuisine.

Should you make up your mind to visit us again do not hesitate to email me on brian.bartolo@excelsior.com.mt and it will be my pleasure to assist you.

Kind regards
Brian

Me and my husband stayed in this hotel for 8 nights. We think it is fantastic. The room was nice and clean, the service was great. The gym room is very nice with several options. We also really liked the swimming pool and the outdoor area, including the small beach. There is a lot to choose from in the breakfast room, great food. And the location is great. The hotel is by the sea, but very near downtown Valletta. The hotel has transport services from and to the airport. We would really like to stay at this hotel again.

The decoration is old fashioned but the service was really nice, everyone was really attentive and polite. The food and pool area are ok, for future reference they should consider improving the beach and sea entrance.

It wasn't the type of hotel that I was expecting.
Overall it's a very good hotel, but I found quite a few hiccups here and there: at the check-in I had to wait for 10 minutes even though there was no queue, the receptionist in front of me was busy (or looked busy) doing something else, but did not bother to greet me and say to be patient for a couple of minutes and that he would have served me shortly. After I managed to do the check-in they told me the room was ready (this was at 4 PM, so after the check-in time), but that they would send somebody to check the room was clean and that I should wait at the lobby for their confirmation. After 10 minutes I had to queue again at the reception and ask whether they were able to check my room...After a few minutes they confirmed it was cleaned and I was given the key.
The rooms require some major updates for sure. The location of the hotel is very quiet, no many restaurants around and I had to take taxi to go elsewhere to go around - there isn't very much in terms of walking distance.
I was there for business, so it wasn't a major problem for me and I did not take advantage of the bespoke SPA and pool, which probably make the difference with other hotels.

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing the seaside: excellent views!

Dear Gerry1582,

Many thanks for sharing your experience at the Grand Hotel Excelsior with other Trip Advisor users. Whilst I apologise for the level of service at time of check-in, appreciate if you could email me on brian.bartolo@excelsior.com.mt with your details and stay dates. This will enable the management team to investigate the matter and take the necessary corrective action.

With regards the rooms kindly note that all rooms are currently being renovated whilst a new state of the art Wi-Fi platform has been installed offering free wi-fi to all 439 rooms and public areas.

In the meantime may I point out that the Excelsior is located at the doorstep of Valletta a UNESCO World Heritage site. Within two minutes by foot one can experience a baroque city bustling with activity. Valletta hosts numerous museums and over 60 bar and restaurants.

We look forward to welcome you again in the near future and experience Valletta.

Kind regards
Brian

Between 19th and 22th of April we spent a wonderful vacation in Malta at the grand excelsior Hotel in Valletta.,
The hotel is situated in a beautiful location, close to the old city, its churches restaurants and shops. We enjoyed very much the stuff attitude and the Hotel restaurant (we dinned there every night) and other facilities including the free parking lot.
Highly recommended

We stayed four nights and couldn't fault the hotel. We ate in the first night as had had a dawn flight. Thoroughly enjoyed the Asian buffet. The hotel is 5 minutes walk from the bus station where you can get buses all round the island for €1.50 the hotel are very keen for you to use their taxi service but there really is no need. Also very easy to walk into the city ( really good restaurants in old bakery street). From the outside it could do with sprucing up but the gardens and grounds are well maintained. It was too cold and windy to use the outdoor pool and sun areas but they did look inviting and were one of the reasons we chose the hotel. All staff were friendly and polite and we had no complaints bout any of the service. Would go again if ever in valetta

A 5* hotel worthy of its class. Room (a superior with balcony patio) was spacious and well-equipped, bed comfortable and view from (sunny) balcony over Marsamxett Harbour was fantastic. Breakfast buffet was excellent (egg chef if you need) and inside bar spacious and comfortable with friendly service and (for a hotel of this class) not particularly expensive - local beer 3 euros.
Outside pool looked inviting (with its own bar) but we visited in April, when temperature didn't merit an outside swim or use of loungers - though some hardy souls did try - but inside pool perfectly adequate.
This hotel is just outside the old Valletta walls and a hilly walk into the centre of the city takes about 15 mins. But its's practically impossible to walk about Valletta without going up or down hills, so the hotel's impressive entrance flights of steps prepares you well (there are, of course, plenty of elevators in the hotel itself!).
You could treat this place as a resort in itself, but one of its great advantages is in the quick access it gives to Valletta - a charming city you shouldn't miss!

Room Tip: You really do get what you pay for as far as views are concerned - if you can, go for a superior roo...
