The Excelsior's position overlooking the harbour and next door to the old town of Valletta, make it ideally placed for all that Malta has to offer. We had a wonderful midweek break there. The room was a lovely size, immaculately clean, and we had a fantiastic view. The pool, spa and dining facilities were excellent and the breakfasts second to none I've experienced. It is a hotel that also caters for large parties. On one evening, the pool area was very busy with ....um.. how to put it... loud, tiddly conference people... but the service was still pretty good, and we didn't have to wait for our meal. That being said, we could hear nothing from our room so it was no great inconvenience
The staff were very polite and helpful, spoke excellent English and were quick to sort out any niggles, and therein lies the niggle! I didn't expect quite so many niggles in a 5* Hotel. Our room was not ready on time, only late by 15 minutes, but ..hurrumph... the hotel provided dressing gowns, but the one my husband wore had a huge rip under the arm, the shelves in the shower was set at a slope... both of them, so everything fell off and landed on the floor, and there they remained; when we mentioned this, the hotel staff said they were aware of it, well why not mend it then....hmmm.....? The shower door was too close to the sink so you had to shimmy your way into it. if you're of a larger side...er.. good luck! The air conditioning didn't work on the first night. But they did mend this as soon as we mentioned it.
All in all though, we would happily stay here again, hopefully the niggles will have be taken care of. This is a lovely place to stay

Room Tip: Ask for a southern room with a sea view, you'll get the sun, and a stunning view. The other side is in shade nearly all day

This is a great hotel to choose if you want to be close to Valletta and all of its attractions. We had a good deal on Bed and Breakfast and enjoyed taking our other meals elsewhere. People with mobility problems find difficulty in climbing the steps from the entrance of the hotel up to the main road that then leads to the bus station and gate to the city, but for us it was a welcome bit of exercise twice a day. The outside pool area and 'beach' is spacious and relaxing, with great views of the harbour. Our room was very comfortable. We had an executive inland room. Our balcony overlooked the entrance (sunny in the morning) and we enjoyed watching the comings and goings of the hotel. All of the public rooms have great views. Breakfast is excellent, but we felt the pricing for other meals was rather expensive and we enjoyed finding alternative places to eat.

Room Tip: You can get a very good deal on inland facing rooms. Our room was probably as good as sea-facing ones, had been refurbished and we got sun on the balcony in the morning. There are plenty of places from which to appreciate the great views - during breakfast, from the pool area, for instance.

Dear met1517

Many thanks for sharing your experience at the Grand Hotel Excelsior with other trip advisor users. The hotel is not only at the doorstep to Valletta but it also offers the possibility to visit all other attractions around the island with one bus ride. Our Transport team also offer a wide range of private tours including wine tasting, day trips to Gozo and sailing cruises around the islands.

In order to assist our less mobile guests, we do offer a complimentary transfer to Valletta at 10am and 6pm.

We do look forward to welcome you again in the near future. Once you have dates in hand do not hesitate to contact me directly on brian.bartolo@excelsior.com.mt as it will be a great pleasure to assist you with the booking.

Kind regards
Brian

Great Hotel, and well situated, everything was well presented and thought out. The staff very helpful, we booked for bed and breakfast and the breakfast was very comprehensive.

The hotel also has large corporate groups, and on the last 2 days, the Hotel was inundated with a large group. The pool area became busy, drinking and then jumping or throwing their friends in the pool, my kids had a great time rescuing, wallets, watches, room cards, worryingly they also pulled out a lot of tacks and nails.

We've just enjoyed a great week's holiday in Malta and found the Excelsior a very comfortable hotel from which to explore the wonderful city of Valletta. It could probably do with a bit of an update but overall our experience was a very positive one. The staff were friendly and helpful, the room was cleaned and re-stocked efficiently each day and the breakfasts offered were plentiful with a good choice. To be recommended.
