“Luxury feel”

I stayed there for 3 nights room with harbor view. Staff are nice and willing to help, special they have Chinese speaking staff can help. Bar and restaurant are nice, you can order various drink from there. The dinner buffet was nice, you can plenty of choices, from European to Asian and of cause local food. The price were not cheap, which compares restaurant outside. You can feel the decent detail of decorations which express that this is a four star hotel! I enjoyed my stay.

Room Tip: a room with harbor view is nice!

Having booked this hotel, we then read some less than positive reviews which made us immediately question our choice. However, our stay here was a case example that you cannot and should not believe all such commentary.

The hotel was clean, the rooms were well maintained and in very good order, with the staff being wonderfully attentive and responsive. It is honestly difficult for me to be critical. The buffet breakfast was hearty with a wide choice for all tastes, so much so it tended to last us until the evening (and I am a food monster). Evening dining consists of an extensive buffet or a la carte menu inside, or a very pleasant restaurant with a more limited menu outside by the water - great fresh fish specials! The bars are great, although exploration of the cocktail menu did result in our being late for breakfast a couple of times. Nothing the bar food menu could not sort out though! Didn't use the internal pool or gym, but really enjoyed the false beach/sea and outside pool.

The location is perfect for Valletta, being only a fairly short walk from all the historic sites of interest, restaurants (loved Ambrosia and Rubino), shops/market, bus terminal, taxis and horse drawn carriage rides. There is a great hop on/off open bus ride with routes around the island to explore - Mdina is a must visit (but not the supposed "Mdina Experience", don't bother with this underwhelming commentated walk through/film show, better to just explore the city itself).

Frankly, the only potential concern which comes to mind would be if you are less mobile, as the walk from hotel to Valletta does involve steps and a short hill, but there are taxis or a courtesy car from hotel (which we did not use). Also, if tv is your thing whilst on hols, the hotel has fairly limited choice of English channels (has BBC news which was enough for me).

Would I go back as a return customer....without question! But next time I would pay the extra for a sea view, (although the inland view was in no way bad or off putting).

Room Tip: If you are visiting when religious feast/festivals are occurring, be prepared for fireworks through...

We had an amazing 7 nights at the Grand Excelsior. The staff were friendly, helpful and accommodating. The food was excellent- both the breakfast buffet and the Tiki restaurant for lunch. We loved having both a pool and a small private beach so you could swim in the sea if you wanted to. Our room was comfortable, very clean, and the small balcony was a nice place to rest after a busy day around Valletta. We will definitely return in the future!

Dear Lolainthecity93

Many thanks for choosing the Grand Hotel Excelsior for your recent stay in Malta and also for sharing your experience with Trip Advisor users.

It is great to note that you loved our small private sandy beach and its crystal clear waters. In fact we are the only property in Valletta that offers the opportunity to experience the Mediterranean sea. We do hope to welcome you again in the very near future and perhaps next you should book our lovely Seafronts with Terraces so as to experience the 180 degree view of Marsamxett Harbour and the Maltese skyline.

Should you have any dates in mind please do not hesitate to email me directly on brian.bartolo@excelsior.com.mt as it will be a great pleasure to assist.

Kind regards

Stayed at the hotel for just short of a week. Staff are polite and helpful which is quite typical of the Maltese. The room was spacious and comfortable. It is not luxury 5 star although it is a good hotel.

If you are on half board remember the evenings have themed meals e.g Indian, Chinese etc. So ask before going in as there is no alternative if you are not keen on that particular meal (except a la carte). The chefs are very helpful and like talking about their creations.

At the weekends there are generally weddings, and preparations round the pool are disruptive, distracting, and take up lots of space. Loud music until midnight. Watch out for tiny pieces of broken glass by the pool after weddings.

Generally the hotel could do with a bit of updating, and the indoor pool and particularly the jacuzzi need a good clean.

Hotel transport is more expensive than local taxis.

Dear James3Teddington

Many thanks for choosing the Grand Hotel Excelsior for your stay and for sharing your experience with Trip Advisor users.

It is great to read that our Chef Brigade shared their culinary experience with you. They are certainly very proud of their creations especially after winning the Malta Culinary Awards in 2013. With regards the themed nights may I point out that this summer we have introduced more International themed nights so as to give more variety to those guests who are not so keen on particular cuisines. We offer Indian themed buffet on Tuesdays, Arabian on Thursdays and the loved Asian buffet on Friday.

With reference to your point related to weddings may I point out that we have a very strict music policy whereby music has to be lowered at 2330 hours and stopped by midnight. We are very aware that such a restrictive policy might limit our chances for outdoor events but our in-house guests remain our top priority.

I will share your concern related to the indoor pool and jacuzzi with our housekeeping team so that they take the necessary action where necessary. As from last November, the hotel kicked off a renovation programme. It will now resume in November as we do not want to disturb any of our guests with the renovation works.

We do hope that we have the opportunity to welcome you again in the near future. Should you have any dates in mind please do email directly on brian.bartolo@excelsior.com.mt as it will be a great pleasure to assist.

Kind regards

Just completed a visit to Grand Hotel Excelsior in Valletta. The staff are the hotel's biggest asset and should be congratulated! My partner had never stayed in the hotel before; however, I had stayed there myself a few years ago. We both enjoyed our holiday due to the friendly and helpful staff. In particular, the waiting /Breakfast staff, cleaning staff and reception, and Marthese who ran the executive lounge on floor 8 of the hotel - who gave us some local advice and information.
We stayed in a room facing the gardens and some aspects of the room could have been better, as the room was still awaiting refurbishment, which was a disappointment as the website had said that rooms were being refurbished overt the winter.
However, we were on the whole, happy with our room, view and balcony.
Breakfast in the hotel is very good. However, the choices of food at the Tiki restaurant could be improved for lunchtimes. We also found portions to be far too large to eat when the temperature outside was 33oC. We enjoyed the pool and the ambiance of the hotel. However, we ate dinner in Valletta every evening due to greater choice of restaurants available.
A lift from the hotel to the main road would cut out all the stairs and allow older and disabled visitors greater access to the hotel. Valletta's silent electric taxi car service could also be linked to the hotel, to give visitors an easier trip to the city during the hot months of July, August and September.
We would certainly return to this hotel, as we loved Valletta and the people of Malta!

Room Tip: Choose the more expensive rooms on the back of the hotel overlooking garden, hotel yacht marina and...

This really is a superb hotel, fantastic service and excellent rooms. We were greeted at the grand foyer with old Hollywood glamour and later enjoyed a complimentary bottle of wine and fruit basket! The food is mouth-watering, from breakfast, lunch by the pool and dinner. One complain, if I may repeat myself as I have already spoken to a young lad at the breakfast room, the coffee did not match any other aspect of the hotel! I mean, I am sure you guys can do better! But if you’re planning to stay close to the capital city, this is the hotel to stay in. Valletta really has a lot to offer, the old palaces, the new buildings at the gate, the food, the museums, the cathedral. Never get tired of it! Planning our next trip as we speak! Thanks for listening!
