“Good hotel in a fantastic location!”
Reviewed 24 July 2014

Enjoyed my stay. Large hotel with lots of facilities and space, close to the centre of Valletta, although you do have to walk up steps and a hill! However, it’s downhill on the way back and the hotel has a fantastic location overlooking the harbour.

Room was large with everything you needed, plus a balcony with views of the harbour. Although some noise from outside, with the patio doors closed the room was well soundproofed and quiet.

Only 2 lifts so had to wait a little at some peak times. I couple of minor issues with staff efficiency (couldn’t find taxi booking for airport, I was sat at breakfast table already in use, check-in slow), none of these were major issues and just gave me a little more time to enjoy the stunning views over the harbour from so many of the hotel’s windows and terraces.

Great stay and would be very happy to go back.

Room Tip: Get a room with balcony and views of the harbour

Dear Crustadel

Many thanks for choosing the Grand Hotel Excelsior for your recent visit to Malta and for taking the time to share your experience with other Trip Advisor users. I must say that you perfectly described the stunning location of the property. The Excelsior is the only hotel in Malta located within a leisure harbour, giving our guests the unique opportunity to experience the sailing passion of the Maltese.

Such constructive feedback is very important as it encourages all team members to continuously improve the service standards. Every review is shared with all departments and corrective action will be taken even on those matters that a reviewer might consider as minor issues.

With regards the walk up steps kindly note that we do offer a complimentary transfer to the capital Valletta at 10 am and 6pm.

We do hope that we will have the opportunity to welcome you again in the near future. Should you have any dates in mind please do not hesitate to email me on brian.bartolo@excelsior.com.mt as it will be a great pleasure to assist.

Kind regards
Brian

We stayed here for a long weekend in early July. It has everything you need to relax and enjoy the sea and sunshine. There is a great pool area with plenty of sun loungers, and the hotel also has its own small beach with access to a cordoned off area in the sea. It is within walking distance of the capital which is up a steep hill. There were two weddings at the hotel over the weekend that we were there and whilst there was a lot of rearranging of the pool area to accommodate one of them, we did not find it disruptive in the slightest. The hotel staff were very careful not to disturb residents. Our balcony overlooked the venue for the other wedding reception, but again, it was not disruptive. Indeed, we thoroughly enjoyed hearing the band from our balcony, and seeing people enjoying themselves. Whilst this hotel might not be particularly cheap, I think it offers good value for money as the standards are high and staff are very friendly. Breakfast was plentiful and we ate at the buffet on two evenings and found the choice and quality, perfectly adequate. For a long weekend of total relaxation, I will definitely return.

This is a great hotel with a lovely location.

Check in was friendly and efficient.

The room was good, plenty of space and the bathroom had both bath and shower.

Breakfasts were good, there was the usually selection of both hot and cold food that you would expect plus there were guys cooking fried eggs and omelettes to order.
The only problem was that on some days there was quite a queue, especially around 9.30.

It is a 10 minute walk to the main gate of the old town of Valletta. The bad news is that about half of it is uphill, the first part is steps leading out of the hotel to the road. It is a walk best done early morning or early evening when the heat is a little less.

There is nothing around the hotel, so to find bars and restaurants you have to walk to the old town.

We did eat at the hotel on the Thursday night when we arrived, at the Tiki restaurant by the water. The food was nice, though not particularly memorable, it was the the location that made the meal..

The pool is good but not particularly deep, I think it was about 1.6m maximum. They allow people to put their towels on the sunbeds and the go off somewhere else (breakfast, sightseeing) and then return later. I find this annoying.

There is an area next to the sea with a fake beach and you can swim in the sea in a roped off section.

Drinks are served around the pool, you just need to grab on of the waiters/waitresses as they walk round. Drinks are not cheap but not too daft for a hotel, a glass of cava was about 6 euros as was a large beer.

Getting towels for the pool was slightly strange. You go to the pool (and spa) level and there is a desk with an attendant handing out towels. You give them your room number and they charge 15 euros per towel to your room. When you return the towel you get a card for each towel. When you checkout and return the card then the charge is reversed.

Now the bad.

The hotel seems to be a popular wedding venue which is fine apart from when it affects the guests. There were weddings on both the Friday and Saturday night when we were there.

On both days they were setting up around the pool area and at about 18.00 it started feeling uncomfortable with the umbrellas and sunbeds being packed away around you.

On the Friday night the live band were still going strong (and loudly) at between 23.00 and 23.30 which for me is too late, as our room overlooked the pool area it was very noticeable even through double glazing.

On the Saturday the wedding was bigger than the Friday one and the open air restaurant was closed for the night so it’s space could be used for wedding guests.

We did not return to the hotel until after midnight and thankfully the band had finished and the music playing was at a reasonable volume.

Dear zappafanman,

Many thanks for choosing the Grand Hotel Excelsior and for taking the time to share your experience with other Trip Advisor users.

Your feedback has been shared with all departments concerned and have also been requested to take the necessary corrective action vis-a-vis those areas which merit improvement. Such constructive feedback is very important to us as it helps the Excelsior team to continuously improve our levels of service.

With regards the weddings hosted at the hotel, please note that we have very strict policies related to music levels. We do apologise if on one of the days these policies were not adhered to. As you rightly mentioned in your review, our policy states that by 2330 hours all music has to be lowered and by midnight the music has to stop.

We do hope that we will have the opportunity to welcome you again in the near future. Should you have any dates in mind please do not hesitate to email me directly on brian.bartolo@excelsior.com.mt. It will be a great pleasure to assist you.

Kind regards

Absolutely loved our stay here. Our little two year old loved the pool! The staff were all very friendly. The food is second to none!!! Marvellous. It's only a short walk into Valletta. The only thing that makes me slightly sad is that there is no british flag flying outside, unless I've missed it next to the German, French, Italian and EU flag? The George Cross features on the Maltese flag, however this is no substitute for ours and there are many british families staying here right now. Just a thought.

Stayed for 4 days in July 2014 with wife and 2 year old daughter. Not a perticular good hotel for kids, but not a big problem either since she loved the pool.

Hotel in genrelal is very nice and the price I suppose is ok comparded to what you get. Room was clean and spacious and we had a nice view of the waterfront. The food was good especially the breakfast. Wi-Fi worked well and the login was only once.

Staff was profesional and gave us good service all along.

I am not giving a full score do to AC in the room was not working very well. Only managed to keep a few degrees under outside in the day and in the night I think the temperature in the room was the same as outside. Also they use the outside area in the night for events and weddings so it is nbot accesseble for pepole staying at the hotel.

Room Tip: 10 E extra for seaview was good for us.

Dear Pheromone

Many thanks for your choosing the Grand Hotel Excelsior for your recent trip and also for sharing your experience at the Grand Hotel Excelsior.

We are pleased to hear that the Wi-Fi worked well. The new system was implemented earlier this year with every room having its own modem so as to guarantee a stable signal to all guests irrespective of the number of devices linked to the platform at any given time. Our Wi-Fi service is free but also offer guests to purchase additional bandwidth should they require to download huge files.

Appreciate if you could let me know your room number so that our maintenance team can inspect the aircondition unit. My email address is brian.bartolo@excelsior.com.mt.

With regards your comments on the outside area kindly note that we do our utmost to minimise the inconvenience to our inhouse guests. In fact the Tiki Bar and Restaurant remains open during outdoor events as it is accessible through the gardens.

We do hope that we will have the opportunity to welcome you again in the near future. Should you have any dates in mind please do not hesitate to email me directly as it will be a great pleasure to assist.

Kind regards
Brian
