Very good experience. all the trappings you'd expect from a top class hotel, free water, bathrobes, turn down, pool and gym facilities. excellent location and views over the grand harbour ( if you get the right room) and within short walk of Valletta bus station where you can get a day ticket all over the island for €1.50 then another 50 metres to Valletta itself

This is my second stay at this hotel and I will stay again.

Good points:

Great location - marvellous views across the harbour - small 'beach' area so you can swim in the sea.
Good service
Spacious bedrooms with really large comfortable bed - superior rooms have separate shower
Bar with excellent service and a wonderful view
Great entertainment - there was a really good singer one night in particular who I gather is a regular (black guy who had a wide repertoire and excellent band, don't recall his name - but very very good)
Lovely pool/harbour side bar and restaurant.
Very good buffet at breakfast - busy if you get there around 9.30, but managed well. And again the view is excellent.
Nice spa, with really good therapists. Treatments reasonably priced and lovely relaxation room.

Bad points:

Weddings! There was a wedding on the Friday night starting at 7pm, but the pool area was being prepared from mid afternoon on the Friday - quite why a hotel should need over 24 hours to prepare is beyond me (all hotels have weddings - but I have never experienced disruption to this degree). There was another wedding on the Saturday so nothing was cleared away. This meant that one felt very uncomfortable by the pool, and importantly, there was no shade. Malta is windy, so they could not put up umbrellas and the only shade was the static shades which were out of bounds because they were being used for the weddings. So if you want to be by the pool when this is happening, take SPF 50. And don't expect peaceful reading because it will be disturbed by staff laying out tablecloths, glasses etc. The loud noise will continue until midnight, so just sit on your balcony and watch because you won't sleep.

Bedrooms. Lovely and spacious (7th floor is good), but decor a bit dated and a few stains on carpets etc. The balconies are spacious, especially on the 7th floor, but there is absolutely no privacy - a very low wall between them - you might as well make friends with your neighbours because you'll be part of their conversation whether like it or not - you can easily walk along the whole floor - so lock your patio doors.

Buffet. We were half board. The food is really well cooked and plentiful. But there is a theme and they stick to it. If you are unusual like me and don't like curried food, avoid the Asian themed nights, because you don't have an alternative except for cheese and biscuits. That said, you can choose off the a la carte - although they're not very geared up for that. Other nights were very good.

Transport into Valetta - it's only 15 mins walk, but uphill which is hard when it's very hot. The free service goes only twice a day - at 10am and 6pm, and is often full.

This sounds rather negative, but I have also stayed at the Phoenicia and still judge this a better option. I would recommend it to anyone as the best hotel to stay in at Valetta - but if the pool matters to you, check those weddings!

Room Tip: Get as high up as you can if you are in the wedding season. And pay extra for full or partial sea v...

Our weekend break in this hotel was brilliant. Rooms are very clean and spacious, food delicious while the staff is very helpful. Check in / check out service was really quick. We never stayed in this hotel before although we went to eat there many times. Dinner at the Tiki Village, was a unique experience. The view from the room was really nice. When we left the hotel on Sunday, back home, we noticed that we forgot some valuable things. I phoned the hotel again, and the things were returned to me immediately. I would like to thank especially Denise Schembri for all her help.

Dear Roberta

Many thanks for choosing the Grand Hotel Excelsior for your short break and also for sharing your experience with other Trip Advisor users especially the gesture from our staff members to help you locate and recover your missing items.

We are very pleased to note that dinner at the Tiki Village was a unique experience. The inception of the Tiki Villas took place in The Philippines when the hotel owners visited self-employed carpenters who earn their living by producing indigenous products. The base of the Villas is comprised of bamboo, while the roof is made of Nipa, a species of palm native to the coastlines of the Indian and Pacific Oceans. Indeed the Villas are typical to the style of carpentry commonly used in The Philippines.

By opting to purchase the Villas from self-employed carpenters, as opposed to buying mass-produced products, the Grand Hotel Excelsior is able to offer a more authentic experience to guests. Furthermore the hotel is promoting Fair Trade whilst assisting workers in The Philippines to make a living and improve their quality of life. It is a shining example of Sustainable tourism put into practice.

We do hope that we will welcome you again at the Grand Hotel Excelsior in the very near future.

Kind regards
Brian

I stayed in this hotel for a week with friends. We had 2 rooms with balcony on the 7th floor which were spacious and had good air conditioning, a must in July in Malta. The decor was a little tired but the beds were comfortable and the free extras - chocolates on the bedside table at night and 2 bottles of water a day - were very much appreciated.

We ate in the Spice Island Restaurant, Admiral's Landing and the Harbour Bar and found the food well presented and quite reasonably priced. Service was excellent. Nothing was too much trouble for the hotel staff and service was always with a smile.

One thing to be careful of is giving your room number out in the bar area. We always paid our drinks bill in cash as we went along, but at check out were presented with bills for drinks charged to our room numbers by other people. This was rectified by the front desk staff without fuss, as the signatures and names did not match ours. The only place our room numbers could have been overheard was in the bar.

I would love to come back to this hotel. The waterside location is lovely and we were very well looked after.

Room Tip: Rooms overlooking the entrance are quieter when the hotel has functions on - most weekends!

Dear Mac36,

Many thanks for choosing the Grand Hotel Excelsior for your recent trip to Malta and for also taking the time to share your experience with other Trip Advisor users. Every feedback is important to us as it gives us the stimulus to continuously improve our levels of service.

With regards the decor we are pleased to inform you the hotel has already initiated a refurbishing programme whereby all rooms will be redecorated. The programme commenced last November and was stopped in April so as not to create an inconvenience to our esteemed guests.

We hope that we will have the opportunity to welcome you again at the Grand Hotel Excelsior in the very near future. Should you have any dates in mind please do not hesitate to email me directly on brian.bartolo@excelsior.com.mt as it will be a pleasure to assist you with your arrangements.

This was a fantastic holiday break. Celebrating our wedding anniversary and my husbands birthday. Every thing was first class, room, food and staff. If I had two little moans it would be about the lounge in the evening. We sat down to enjoy a coffee at 8.30pm we were served then 5minutes later the "student waitress" wanted to take our cups and the room number. We felt compelled to leave. Also the wedding on the Friday evening meant clearing up round the pool seemed to start early. Also it appeared the wedding guests used the same toilets as guests at the tikke restaurant fine - but when I went to toilet it was full of wedding guests in the end I went in the hotel and up to my room on the top floor not really very fair.

We visited Valletta for this annual wine festival staying in the Excelsior Grand hotel. The 5-star hotel was lovely with spacious rooms with sea- view balcony, great facilities and the wonderful Tiki outside bar/restaurant.

The wine festival was in nearby Hastings Gardens where we were entertained by some great live music, The Creepers who played some great blues numbers, were clearly the best, some great food, we has sushi and of course, the chance to sample some great Maltese wines.

A thoroughly enjoyable weekend which would have been perfect & warranted a higher rating, if the Excelsior truely offered 5-star treatment, which it didn't. We rate it as barely a 4-star because there was no customer care or service from the hotel staff, no seperate shower (just in-bath one which was difficult to get in & out of), no bath mat - we had to ring up for one, no decent TV channels as hotel had not signed up to cable, no complimentary fruit or wine, to name just a few things we expect, no demand for a 5-star hotel.

Notwithstanding this, it did not spoil what was overall, a great weekend in Valletta.

Just returned from an excellent week at this hotel in the beautiful city of Valletta. The hotel arranged our transport from the airport , an affordable luxury especially as we arrived quite late in the evening. The driver was so welcoming and provided lots of helpful tips on things to see and do during our stay. This set the scene for the rest of our visit. The setting of the hotel is second to none, right on the edge of the harbour with beautiful views day and night. The staff at reception were all lovely and nothing was too much trouble for all the staff we encountered throughout our stay. Breakfast was exemplary , with a vast choice to suit all tastes. A personal favourite were the omelettes that were cooked to order. The room was very comfortable and spacious and cleaned everyday. This hotel exceeded our expectations in every way. A special thankyou to staff who left a lovely bottle of wine and a card in the room for my birthday!!
