Enjoyed our stay.ticked all the right boxes.only nigles were being offered a lower class of room at check than was paid for(overbooked I suspect) and having to pay a premium for a cuppicno at breakfast.I would also eat out and on your return watch out for the road crossing at the hotel entrance very dangerous.a premium hotel in a great spot.

Very friendly staff.
Very clean and very nice rooms - we had the sea front room with a balcony, so the view was stunning!!!!
Breakfast was varied and delicious.
This hotel is highly recommended to anyone who wants excellent service and some peace and quiet.

Room Tip: It's strongly recommended to upgrade the room to a room with ocean front view, on a high floor/ The view from the the room amazing, as you can see ...

Loved the hotel. Staff were helpful and we loved the breakfast room with wonderful views. We had a room at the front of the hotel overlooking the gardens, it was very quiet just what we asked for. The hotel collected us from the airport as arranged and we had a smooth journey to the hotel.
We had free water every day which was lovely and very unexpected. There are a lot of steps to get out of the hotel but nothing that can't be managed at a slow pace. The pool and beach area were very clean and there were always lots of sun des available .

Room Tip: Rooms at the front seemed to be quieter

My wife and I did some research (including friends) before choosing this hotel and it appeared to be among the very few to meet all our criteria: beautiful sea view, sand beach, close to the historical sites, level of comfort, good reviews and so on. We spent 7 nights there, and booked a room with full sea view. I attached 2 photos (the view was a joy each morning!). The entire staff, from drivers to room cleaning people are indeed extremely friendly, helpful, and well informed – as all reviewers pointed out. Very well trained and professional, starting from the reservation moment (the hotel has dedicated Guest Agents, very prompt in answering questions and in handling whatever issue – thank you, Gwennoline) until the check-out. Very good (and free) WiFi in the room.
I’d recommend to book the hotel drivers whenever needed - the price is the same as when using regular taxi’s (or 1-2 euros higher) but: the hotel cars have the expected level of comfort, the drivers speak a good or very good English and they provide useful information. A friend recommended us to visit Gozo, booking this trip from the hotel’s offer. The price is fixed for 2-4 persons hence for two it’s not a bargain, but it’s worth every penny because the driver is also your guide (thank you, Joseph), he provides a lot of useful information, the tour is “customizable”: it takes about 7 hours, but this way you may spent here more time, and less there, even add/change sites to visit etc. For four people the price/person is less then covering the distances by taxi. The room was great, large and very functional, except for the bed – this is one of the two big minuses: the mattress was more like a hammock, we woke up each morning with some degree of back pain (careful also with the sliding door to the balcony). If one would benchmark with other 5 stars hotels (similar locations, other countries), another deceiving point for us was the breakfast, quite limited both as variety and quality, and the same goes as options for having dinner: one open restaurant only inside the hotel, and one close to the pool (opening at 20:00).
In July/August most days are very hot, especially after noon (humidity is also high), but from 6 pm to about 10:00 am it’s much more pleasant (also better for taking pictures). The hotel’s sand beach is quite small and rocky (you may want to bring special shoes). In Valletta, with the exception of a few souvenir shops, all other close latest at 19:30 (including malls), restaurants are still open (but some close for a couple of hours after 14:00). Check the opening hours for museums/cathedrals as they close earlier than one would expect, especially on Saturday/ Sunday (when also many Maltese visit these places, so you may experience traffic jams). Malta has a very special “atmosphere”, there is much depth to explore if one wants more than just relaxation, I may say it was a great experience for us!

Room Tip: Best is full sea view, and upper floor.

We spent 3 nights here at the end of July in room 605. We found the carpet stained and the headboard torn and only 3 coffee creamers in the hospitality tray. On 2 occasions face flannels and bath mats were taken but not replaced. Upon request they were all replenished but we experienced a long wait before housekeeping appeared. On return on the second day in the early afternoon we discovered the loo seat hinge broken but this was not repaired till the next day. At breakfast it was not easy to get tea nor coffee brought to our table. We made several overtures at Reception (where we found Alexandra extremely polite and efficient) but no satisfactory explanation for the condition of our room. The Hotel is very well positioned for access to Valletta - but there are 90 steps and an uphill road to the city to negotiate: a courtesy car service does go to Valletta twice a day at 1000 and 1800.

Dear rfp2001,

Whilst thanking you for sharing your feedback, we are extremely disappointed that we did not exceed your expectations. I will be sharing your review with our Operating Departments so as to ensure that corrective action is taken immediately.

As one can appreciate it is very difficult to do room refurbishment during busy periods as this will create a lot of discomfort to our guests. In fact last November we initiated an extensive room refurbishment programme and this will recommence as from the end of October. Our objective is to do these works without any inconvenience to the guests. Notwithstanding this does not justify your experience. Appreciate if you could email me directly on brian.bartolo@excelsior.com.mt with your details so as to assist you further.

I do hope that we will have another opportunity to welcome you again at the Grand Hotel Excelsior and will ensure that you will have a wonderful experience.

Kind regards
Brian
