Excelsior Grand Hotel
Ranked #6 of 15 Hotels in Valletta
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 31 August 2014

Situated at a short walk from Valletta's main gates and yet at the seaside offering a possibility to have a swim in the Mediterranean, location is THE ASSET of the Excelsior (you should be aware though that there are a few steps to climb on your walk to the centre, this might be an impediment for less mobile guests). We also appreciated the very spacious and well kept room and bathroom (seaside view). The bedding is excellent. The pool area is good and there is wifi access on the whole grounds of the hotel.
However we were not happy with the fact that our bathroom was equiped with a floor mat for only two days out of six . Even after I had explicitly asked for a new one we were not helped (can this be true in a five star hotel ???).
Breakfast is quite OK and varied but the coffee is simply undrinkable. If you want a decent coffee (expresso or cappucino) they charge 2,50 € or more !!! Also the quality of the fruit at the breakfast buffet is not very high (tasteless watermelon and melon in the summer). I've been in hotels of a lesser rating where breakfast was of a much higher standard. Be aware of the fact that the à la carte restaurant is not at all à la carte but a large buffet. You can find a lot better in Valletta.

Room Tip: take a seaside room otherwise, you might be looking at a wall

Dear Francis T

Many thanks for choosing the Grand Hotel Excelsior for your recent trip and for sharing your experience with other Trip Advisor users. Whilst appreciating the positive comments may I assure you that all other feedback highlighting possible improvement opportunities will be discussed with our Operations department so that corrective action is taken immediately. Such feedback is important as it helps us to continuously improve our level service.

May I take the opportunity to point that the hotel offers a complimentary transfer service to the Valletta city centre at 10 am and 6pm. With regards the a la carte menu kindly note that in Summer we offer a la carte at the Tiki Restaurant right by the water's edge. In the main restaurant we serve themed buffet dinners.

We do hope that we will have another opportunity to welcome you again in the near future. Should you have any dates in mind just email me directly on brian.bartolo@excelsior.com.mt as it will be a great pleasure to assist.

Kind regards
Brian

The facilities at the Excelsior Grand Hotel in Valletta, Malta, are nothing short of exceptional, but what will always stand out in my mind is the very high level of service provided by staff, particularly the Guest Relations department (Ms Leparoux) that prepared our stay to celebrate our son's birthday. Beginning with the prompt airport chauffeur pick-up service, our stay was made even more memorable by an unexpected upgrade to a luxurious and spacious sea view room with a very large balcony, complimentary wine and chocolates in the room along with a birthday welcome, a personalised poolside birthday celebration dinner at the Tiki Restaurant -- chocolate cake and fireworks included -- under a super moon and an after-midnight swim in the lovely indoor pool. Deciding on breakfast was a challenge due to the enormous choice available, and our fresh cooked eggs and bacon were delicious. Last but not least, check-out was efficient and friendly, leaving us hoping to return soon.

Room Tip: Rooms facing the pool courtyard could be noisy until midnight on weekends due to wedding celebration...

We [family of four adults] stayed here for four nights in the Executive Club with a partial sea view. We would thoroughly recommend both. Our rooms overlooked the pool and the water and the opposite shore. It is highly picturesque, rewarding very long relaxation on the room balcony.

The rooms are very comfortable - although attention to detail could be a bit better - a flannel appeared on Day3! There was no bath mat. But otherwise, perfect.

The hotel staff are excellent and orientated towards their guests. We ate breakfast and took pre-dinner drinks in the Executive Lounge - both were limitless, and served with great attention and care. A particular highlight was afternoon tea with sandwiches, cakes, and scones. Delicious.

We used the fitness centre and pool and swam in the hotel reserved sea area - the water is crystal clear.

A special highlight was the free hour-long yoga practice session - excellently planned and tailored to your needs and level, and a true relaxation for mind and body. Sign up for this as soon as you arrive! Whether you are new to yoga or an old hand, you will find it perfect.

We had evening drinks in the Tiki bar which has highly accomplished musicians worth

We did find that the food on offer was rather limited in its variety - one evening we just wanted soup for one of our party who was unwell - there was no soup to be found in the restaurants. But there is a wonderful restaurant right next door [The Haywharf] - so we wandered along the water's edge to be met with a closed gate that we could not persuade the person on the intercom to open. So we had to walk right round on the road. This seemed rather a petty restriction - we gave our names and room numbers, but the gates stayed shut.

The hotel is perfectly placed - a short and lovely walk to the old town with its sites and restaurants.

We had hired a car and drove to other locations on the island and on Gozo, and we were pleased with our hotel choice. Do stay in a Club room if you can - the lounge is really welcoming. Do get a room with a partial sea view - you can see more than a full sea view! And do go to the yoga session!

Room Tip: Partial sea view. Club level if you can.

An excellent hotel. Large, airy, spotless. Wonderful breakfasts, comfortable bar and make sure to spend time in their outdoor bar, right beside the yachts and enjoy the breeze flowing by. Rooms very comfy, lovely bathroom with both shower and bath. All the staff we met were so well trained in their line of work, very polite and friendly. Indoor pool open 24/7 and all the luxuries you could want. Would not stay anywhere else.

Room Tip: Room 608. Fantastic views of the marina and for miles over Malta. Very quiet and the perfect spot to...

I was lucky enough to celebrate my 50th birthday with a week long stay at the excelsior grand hotel. Location is great approx. 10 min walk from the old city gate 5 mins to central bus station where buses will take you all over the island for €1.50 per day . Also close to ferry for Sliema,
There are some steps to be negotiated but its not mount Everest and hotel does run a free shuttle service at certain times of the day and electric taxis are also available at €5 into the centre.

The hotel is modern in style but not in a cold way , reception and public areas are opulent and
beautifully kept . Breakfast room is large with wonderful views out across the harbour. Great selection of everything on buffet , omelettes , eggs, waffles, pancakes etc cooked to order.
Staff in breakfast room very attentive and pleasant especially Eileen who looked after us very well.

We stayed in a terrace room on the 7th floor which was amazing . Fabulous views across
the harbour which kept us enthralled day and night. The views of the harbour are stunning from
these rooms. Our room was large and well maintained with lovely comfortable king size bed.
Bathroom lovely with large shower cubicle and separate bath . Plenty of toiletries which were
replenished frequently. Housekeeping service was excellent nice touch was bottles of water delivered to room each evening and turn down service at night.

pool area was really well kept very clean and plenty of sunbeds available even in busy august.
Pool boys very helpful with umbrellas , tables, etc . Very nice beach area as well with swimming
area in harbour. No loud music nice peaceful stress free environment.

The best thing about this hotel is its staff they were so pleasant , helpful and friendly and this
is what really made our stay so wonderful we were welcomed by duty manager Lavinia on our arrival and her wonderful welcome set the tone for our entire stay. Treat yourself to a stay here you wont regret it.

Room Tip: choose a sea front or terrace rooms for the best views of beautiful harbour

We stayed here as a couple for a week bed and breakfast. Overall the hotel is impressive with large clean well appointed rooms, large outdoor and indoor swimming pools, and a small beach area with steps into the sea. Sun beds are always available and only on the weekend did the hotel seem full with a wedding taking place. The servicing of the room is excellent and carried out every day. Prices for drinks, the hotels taxi service and food are expensive so fill up at breakfast and use one of the city's electric cabs if want to save money. From the hotel it's a ten minute walk to the centre of Valletta but be aware this is via steep steps from the hotel. The bar/reception staff were excellent and attentive as expected from a five star hotel.

The suggestions we would make for improvements would be a more varied after hours restaurant/ room service for food, a cheese platter just sometimes isn't enough. The beach area needs cleaning more, not so much the staffs fault more rude lazy guests throwing rubbish and cigarette butts on the floor rather than using the bins. Be aware most people do seem to smoke and this goes on throughout all the outdoor areas. The bar areas are very quiet on a night despite excellent entertainment this could be down to prices as stated before drinks are very expensive.

Overall though a nice experience and a hotel we would use again.

What can we say about the Excelsior, apart from we loved it. The staff were amazingly friendly, co-operative and willing to assist at all times.
The hotel certainly made every effort to make you feel unique. We had a room on level 9, looking over the harbour. It cost a little more, but we were treating ourselves whilst we had our short stay. The views were fantastic, and it was a nice terrace to relax with a glass of wine on.
The room was large, well furnished and had everything you'd need. They can customise the mini bar off a long list of items, so it only has things you'd use, and the cost wasn't stupidly expensive. The bathroom looked a little old, but was clean and large.
The pool/beach area could have more chairs, as these seem to be rare commodities and some guest behaviour becomes a little primitive when a chair is free or not.
I'd say the only experience we had which wasn't up to the same standards was the restaurants. The buffets (not usually a favourite of mine) were lacking in quality food, in particular the meats were tired and dry - I tried chicken, beef, duck and pork whilst here.
The salads were fine, but the desserts were unimaginative.
All in all, we'd come back again and stay. It's a short walk to Valletta, which is being restored extensively right now, and the traders are being encouraged to stay open later to bring people in. It's also very close to the bus terminal.
