We enjoyed staying at the hotel with our three year old. He loved the pool area which was the highlight of our visit. The breakfast area was bit too hectic and I told my husband to skip it as it wasn't worth the aggravation. We had a package that included a massage, dinner and 3 day car rental; to obtain each was a bit of a song and dance as you would have to explain it was included in the price of the room. The good news is that we did get each item without charge. One disappointment was that the steamroom was not working; they were also repairing the indoor pool. I would stay again to be close to Valetta which was very interesting. We had a room that faced the harbor (not the pool) which was awesome for a pre dinner drink.

This is my second review of the hotel.
Air Malta kindly offered us a free flight to compensate for the 5-hour delay we experienced in July. Unusually for us, we decided to stay in a hotel we had used previously.
We contacted the hotel directly and were offered a preferential price on an executive room on the 8th floor. This was a massive improvement upon the pool-side room we had occupied before and afforded 180 degree views of the very impressive harbour and morning tea on the very large balcony was an absolute pleasure. A big improvement is that the balcony on this level of room offers not only a table and chairs but sunbeds as well which means relaxing on the balcony is a far more comfortable affair.
The issues regarding stains and marks still exist and I was slightly disappointed that the robe provided by the hotel had both a broken belt loop and a rather disconcerting stain on the sleeve. This aside, the room was light, spacious and a free bottle of wine, daily newspaper and bowl of fruit was most welcoming.
On the downside, the promised daily bottles of water were again inconsistent and the air-conditioning was out of its depth.
Possibly, as we weren't staying peak-season, the hotel was much quieter and, as a result, far more restful. The hotel was hosting just one event; the World's Strongest Man but this provided nowhere near the disruptions we had encountered in July.
The hotel kindly offered us access to the executive lounge which is far more relaxing though the choice of menu is restricted Our host, Marthese, could not have been more pleasant or accomodating.
We dined at the hotel on just one occassion - the Asian-themed evening - and the food was very good. The themed nights aren't particularly expensive and we were very impressed with our experience.
The hotel arranged a taxi to both collect and deliver us back to the airport and this service is faultless.
The word "relaxing" appears regularly in my review and this is what our latest experience was.

Tremendously friendly staff, excellent eateries in the hotel, lovely area to lounge by the pool, and just a short stroll to the capital city and bus terminal that can take you anywhere on the island.

We had the great fortune of staying at the Grand Hotel Excelsior in Valetta (Floriana), Malta over a period of 14 days (September 7-September 21). It is impossible to fake perfection for so long. The Grand Hotel Excelsior is it: perfect. I am a senior journalist and editor. I have spent these past 30 years traveling and am no stranger to 5-star accommodation. I am very demanding (some would use a harsher word). The Grand Hotel Excelsior gave me no reason - not even once - to complain or wish for more.

The hotel is located within a short walking distance from the islands' transportation hub: Valetta's Central Bus Terminus. It offers breathtaking views of harbors and sea, citadels and palaces perched atop cliffs, and camera-defying sunsets. Sixty (!) chefs in three restaurants produce daily menus of astounding ethnic variety and the highest quality. At an average of 80 euros for a couple (wine and gratuity included), the Grand Hotel is a culinary haven and heaven. The rooms sport all the amenities, free Wi-Fi included. They are spacious and very tastefully decorated (in mauve and cherry wood colors). The balconies are equally capacious. This establishment has just celebrated two years of award-winning existence, so everything is brand new.

But physical infrastructure is useless without the proper personnel. Here the Grand Hotel Excelsior is truly grand and veritably excels. Our minutest wishes were expediently taken care of. Example: we asked for decaf coffee (the room has tea and coffee making facilities, kettle and all) and, from that moment on, were never amiss. From reception to dining room and Executive Lounge staff, everyone was always smiling, genuinely interested, eager to assist, friendly, outgoing, and multilingual. Perhaps owing to the Maltese mentality, they shared with us stories from their personal lives and we did the same. It felt good.

I have a personal list of favorite hotels. In Vienna: the Koenig von Ungaren; in Prague, Hoffmeister; In Tenerife: Iberostar; now, in Malta, the Grand Hotel Excelsior.

The Excelsior is a great place to stay for couples who want a bit of luxury on their summer holiday. The location on the edge of the bay combined with the high standard of the hotel make this a great place to base yourselves for a week on Malta.

Reaching the hotel is easy with either a taxi or a bus ride taking you the short distance from the airport to the hotel - the central bus "station" (i.e. by the main gate to the old city) is only 5 minutes walk from the hotel and it is all downhill, although if elderly or infirm, I'd recommend the taxi option.

Once at the hotel, the air-conditioning combined with a welcome drink and a cold towel were very much appreciated in the heat of summer. The staff at reception were quick to check us in and proved both friendly and knowledgeable. The concierge service was able to deal with all of our questions together with a never-ending supply of maps of the town, and their recommendations for dining were good.

The room itself was large and well-furnished to a standard one would expect from a hotel of this calibre. Our room was a standard room facing out over the front of the hotel, away from the seafront, but still to the same standard and received sunshine on the balcony all day (handy for drying the swimsuits out!).

We ate at the restaurant in the hotel on the first evening and the prices were not as high as I expected. The main restaurant has great views over the harbour and the service was excellent. Not a huge choice for vegetarians such as myself, but the choices available were good. There is a buffet for those so inclined which is good value for money. When booking, we chose to opt for the breakfast included rate through Expedia, and this made it good value as the price for the breakfast on the day is quite steep, although cheaper than other hotels in this class on mainland Europe.

The pool area is great - lots of space for everyone and despite it being summer season, we never struggled to find two sunbeds and a parasol, plus the staff are always keen to help if you need to rearrange the furniture! There is a beach bar by the pool with a good menu, both for drinks and food, and the service is speedy with a smile. We spend a couple of days relaxing at the pool rather than brave the heat sightseeing and it was a good choice.

Overall, I loved this hotel and would definitely recommend it to other visitors to Malta.

We stayed at the GHE in August this year. On arrival you are greeted by a Grand entrance with fabulous reception area with beautiful chandaliers. Immediately greeted by staff and provided a very welcome complimentary fruit cocktail. We booked two connecting rooms, one for us and one for the children. Both rooms were modern and stylish with a good sized bathroom with full complimentary range of toiletries. Mini bar, Sat TV, comfortable beds, bath robes and wonderful views of the pool area and harbour made the stay extra special. Pool deck is tremendous and there are few more relaxing moments than watching the sun set over valletta, drinking a cold beer, watching the boats return to the harbour. Waitress service by the pool means you hardly have to move! Excellent selection of food. Particularly enjoyed the outdoor restaurant. Great location for Valletta. Very family friendly. Would absolutely recommend to other families. Definately 5 star.
