“Take a Walking Tour”
Reviewed 23 June 2014

Tinganes is a fairly compact area with much history. From the Parliament Building to the grass roofed cottages, it is a fairy tale in real life. To get the most from it I would suggest a walking tour. If you want to get a little more flavor, hop on the RED local bus, it is free and runs in a loop. Can't get lost.

“A memorable visit whatever the weather”
Reviewed 16 June 2014 via mobile

We only had a few hours in Torshavn but there was so much to see and in this compact area of town it was hard to miss anything. Arriving from the Scottish mainland, this place is so different with turf roofed wooden, brightly painted houses and narrow alleyways straddling the harbour. The old town is home to the parliament buildings and it is remarkable that the old grass topped buildings here are part of that parliament.

Although the mist was quite heavy, I could imagine the stunning panoramas on a clear day and was very envious of those who had seen it in glorious technicolor!

The area is very close to the other parts of the town and there are coffee shops and cafes along the harbour, narrow, winding streets and interesting little shops. The white painted cathedral with its clock tower is easy to spot and visit and the Tourist Information Centre is a useful stop off.

“Such a beautiful area”
Reviewed 15 June 2014

Walking around Tinganes on a quiet Sunday morning listening to the sound of church bells and catching glimpses of the boats in the harbour over the turf roofs is a truly lovely experience.

“Torshavn Parliament Building”
Reviewed 1 January 2014

Tinganes is Torshavn's Parliament Building located right on the waterfront. Can't miss this red brick structure with a green roof. There is a very large colony of storm petrels on this island. Interesting to know that Torshavn is Norse for God of Thunder.

Really interesting history and unbelievably charming little houses and alleys. A guided walking tour is recommended.
