“Faroe Islands Cathedral simple but holy”
Review of Torshavn Cathedral

If you are lucky enough to get to Faroe Islands, you will be treated to some wonderful historical places dating back to hundreds and even thousands of years ago, mostly Nordic. The roofs of the dwellings are especially interesting with Sod covering birch bark, which both insulated and waterproofed the buildings. Most of the present population is Lutheran and the Cathedral is not to be missed. It's structure is modest but very beautiful. The organ is particularly spectacular. Don't miss it.

I contacted Bil-Mini Taxi Tours on line. They were prompted at getting back to me. I told them we were 3 couples coming into Torshavn off Celebrity Infinity June 4, 2014. Wanted a tour to include Gjogy ( Northern Esturoy) and Saksun...Because these two places where in different direction the total cost of the tour for 6 people was 2,250 DKK ( which is about $70pp) Far cheaper than any of the shore excursions offered..plus they do not see these parts of the islands. Plus Dagfinnur -our driver- took us places no bus could possibly travel, and we didn't stop at those normal " tourist stop" that all shore excursions seem to do. Would highly recommend this company to anyone going to the Faroe Island...Also there is no prepay---something the weather is so bad the cruiseline may not be able to dock...Have heard from other people. We paid with credit cards..no problem.

Stop here on a recent cruise and enjoyed walking the town and seeing the cathedral. The town is itself is relatively small even though it is the capital of the Faroe Islands. There are a few shops, coffee houses and restaurants to stop at and in general it is nice pleasant walking tour assuming the weather is agreeable.

Certainly this is a very pretty building with an attractive strip of garden in front. The bell chimes add to an early stroll around the neighbourhood, but there is really not much else to it.

If you are visiting Torshavn the cathedral is very near to the harbour, is easy to find and, in my opinion, a 'must do' destination. It must be one of the smallest cathedrals in Europe and, to me, quite different from what I had expected. The cathedral clock tower stands above the town roofs and the building itself is painted white with latticed windows. The inside is bright and, you could say, almost modern in appearance although the refurbishment dates back to 1865. As it is so central the cathedral is well worth a visit but check on opening times as on a weekday it was closed in the morning and we had to revisit later.
