It may be not the biggest castle in Europe (but it is really big), but with its setting up the rock and its layering of different centuries it gives you feeling that you enter a fairy tale. You are surrounded with a fabulous construction that merges with the rock. The chapel and the big gallery with the stunning view are the highlights. The interior is a bit empty, but you may consider it is a plus, living you free to imagine any epoch that is your favorite - from Romans to early XIX century. The castle just inspires you, it does not give you distinctive images, it is just a sketch, a monumental structure you run your imagination around. We liked it.

The town below the castle is charming, and with plenty of restaurants, too.

The castle itself is very impressive well preserved and beautifull but there are a few things bothered us. First we missed the enterance because of bad signing. Then there is no one to explain if you want, and also most of the casle Is not furnitured and fills like deserted.

A long way up the hill, so drive up to car park 200m from the entrance. Considering the whole site was derelict the restoration started in the 1970's is superb. Information notes on exhibits in English was a pleasant surprise and the Chateau is well worth visiting.

The remodel of this castle is beautiful. They've done a great job. I only wish more of the rooms had the decor of the times. A few did, but the comic art area did not appeal to me. Seemed very out of place.
Free admission with the Luxembourg Card.

This chateau is beautiful and majestic as it perches on the hill. We arrived at night after a very long and hilly drive through the country to be amazed with the chateau walls lit greeting us grandly through trees as we weaved down the hill into town.

Especially if you've toured a bunch of castles.. don't take this tour. The castle has been completely restored and appears to be used for parties, concerts, and meetings (attend a concert for free admission to the chateau is best).

DO:
Take the chairlift to the top of the hill for a nice view of town, the river, and the chateau. The wooded path is fun and you can walk through this other end of town past the chateau.

Eat at the restaurant near the bridge (castle side of river, other side of road).. friendly staff, multilingual. (don't eat at the restaurant across the river with river side/level seating - annoying waiter from Portugal made our experience bad; he clearly wanted to close the restaurant early).

Stay at the hotel Hientz; friendly multilingual staff and AMAZING breakfast. Nice garden too for after dinner drinking or cigars... motorcycle garage parking, flat screens in room, hairdryers, elevator, central in town, free wifi, clean, updated, charming.

Use Vianden as base for Luxembourg tours.. very sporty area for fishing, hiking, canoeing, cycling etc.. wine tasting in the south, and the city of Luxembourg is only 45 minutes away. (we preferred the quiet of Vianden to the wall-street feel of Luxembourg)

Vianden is such a cute little town... but don't expect too much in the way of shopping or dining. Expect very German food. Most speak German and French, some English.
