“An utterly unexpected welcome - from the property itself”
Reviewed 10 September 2013 for a stay in August 2013

Absolutely nothing could prepare us for the charm, space and peace this hidden treasure of a converted barn offered. Just walking into its large two storey open living room leading up to a gallery with double bedroom, bathroom and (boys) chilling area was a delight. Downstairs there were two more bedrooms - and bathroom but much more importantly a room set aside with full-sized pool table for the sheer pleasure of it.

With indoor sauna-room and outdoor hot-tub, there was no excuse not to relax. And even more of a surprise, the secluded garden leant itself to all day sun bathing without distraction.

A large kitchen (big enough for at least 4 double beds without touching the sides) with low beamed roof and cooling stone floor made for a welcome break from the day's heat.

It wasn't just a holiday home for the owner Tony, it was his home which he's lovingly filled with period advertising prints promoting cognac and hung alongside on the bare brick walls were tools of the wine growing trade including some seriously large cork-screws.

Tony welcomed us in person, made sure we knew what was what, offered us all a glass of local wine and then left us to 'our barn' for the holiday. Staying with friends close by Tony was contactable but never intrusive.

With Cognac a 40 minute leisurely drive by car; the region's capital Angoulême closer and plenty of villages and market towns in between - you're not far from anything but still totally hidden away in the countryside.

The region itself Poitou-Charentes is recognised for its aperitif Pineau des Charentes - and there are many to tempt the palate. We found a very good wine producer called Cognac Remi Landier which has a store in Rouillac that's open to the public - well worth a shopping visit as it's still a family run business offering their own wines, Pineau and Cognac. Only 10 minutes away - by car sadly, which is the only problem..!

All in all, an excellent break and we came back refreshed, which is what really counts...

“Top notch for all!!”
Reviewed 15 August 2013 for a stay in July 2013

A really lovely home, with many preserved original features.
Tony went out of his way to assist in our arrival - several texts were exchanged during our journey down from Paris as the area had suffered a severe storm the evening before we arrived, and there was no electricity or mobile phone signal at the property!
Tony ensured that he was at the property for our arrival, and was well armed with a number of torches! (The power came back on shortly after we arrived-much to Tonys delight).
The property was very well equipped and clean. The beds were made up ready, and the showers and toilets were of a high quality.
The kitchen was extremely well equipped and very spacious-a pleasure to cook in!
The garden area was well maintained, and the outside games provided much amusement for all ages - hopefully all the shuttlecocks have come down from the roof!! We were surprised and delighted to find an inflatable spa pool, heated and ready. What a bonus!
The area is quiet, and there are some interesting places around. The inland beach at Les Gours is great on a hot day. There are toilets and food available there, and a lifeguard during peak season.
The silvermine at Melle is worth a trip, but the commentary is in French, so you need to have someone with you to translate, otherwise it is all a foreign language!
It is worth remembering that it is quite a long drive down from Calais ,about 8 hours driving.- but well worth it!!
A delightful place to stay, and we would love to go back.
