Ancient Shipwreck Museum

I had read reviews criticising this museum for lack of information, however, they couldn't give any more information, this was just an everyday trading vessel from 4BC, with no records or ledger.

I found the whole thing fascinating the curators have recreated a secion of the hold as it would have been and they also display a model of what the vessel would have been like.

I would personally have preferred a little bit more information on the discovery and subsequent recovery, as the phot montage has one sentence descriptions.

The items that are there give an insight into sea life back in 4 BC. I really enjoyed it.

I thought the museum would have a myriad stories and impressions of shipwrecks through the ages when it only really has one. This is displayed well and all the artefacts and details are good, but a museum is perhaps too exaggerated a term for it. The saving grace is the entry is included as part of the entry to Kyrenia (Girne) castle. I much preferred the details on the Neolithic man and the archeology of this area.

The actual remains of a sunken wooden merchant ship complete with salvaged cargo dating back over 2300 years. The ship is only a small trading vessel but it is a staggering historical artefact none the less. It is located in a welcoming temperature-controlled room inside the courtyard of Kyrenia Castle so the entry fee is already included.

Although the idea of looking at a shipwreck was not an exciting prospect we had a look anyway as we had paid to go into Kyrenia Castle. Prior to going in there is a display of life in the world at the time of the seafarers. It is well laid out and gives enough information without going into too much boring detail. The oictures of the shipwreck in situ is very interesting and the proximity of the exhibits to the visitor is quite exciting-being able to touch ancient amphora gave me a great sense of history. The shipwreck itself is just the lower part of the hull of this ancient sailing vessel but, again, seeing a craft thousands of years old in a good state of preservation was, for me, a thing of wonder. The museum is just one of a number of displays in the castle at Kyrenia and I would thoroughly recommend the whole thing.
