“Not that bad”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 November 2012

I stayed in this hotel for one night. As a single traveller the kind receptionist gave me a double room on the 6th floor. Personally I don't like guilded furniture but for the rest it was comfortable and clean. The hotel is located on the Turkish side of the walled city. During my visit in november this side of the city turned out to be very quiet and finding an open restaurant proved to be difficult. Good views of the city and the mountain range in the North form the top (8th) floor.

This was a hotel that cost TL 210 per night - the most expensive 3 star hotel we stayed at in Cyprus. If it cost TL 100 per night it would still be poor value.

The state of the room was dreadful. The cupboards and tables in the room looked like they were from flat packs and were in various stages of falling to bits. The wall paper had dirty patches and stains. The shower had black mould in it and projected water horizontally. There was no hair dryer and no faciltities to make tea and coffee, which you would expect in a hotel in this price range. The wifi was also hoplessly slow. The airconditioning hardly cooled at all.

Luckily there was an English speaking receptionist when we checked in, but we never saw her again. After that when there happened to be anyone at reception they did not speak English, and did not seem to care. The manager could barely speak or understand English, was rude, and also gave the impression he did not care.

If you have to stay in Nicosia then consider staying on the south side. There are plenty of hotels that cost much less than Saray Hotel and are high quality hotels by comparison, and the need to cross the border is only a minor inconvenience.

Room Tip: Look at the room before you check in.

Went to this hotel as a guide book had said good views were to be had on the roof.
Yes good views of the old and the new Nicosia.
COST NOW. 15 TL inc a drink. Tea, coffee or a soft drink, no beer. The guide book was 2 years old and stated it was 5 TL - we were given tickets which were then handed back to claim a free drink on the roof terrace once someone had come up to let us onto the terrace.

Think we may have been riped of. The receptionist did not speak much English, were in 2 minds on going up but we were on holiday so went for it.

Be aware of the price hike !

On arrival at this scary grey tower block hotel I found that the receptionist was hostile and rude.

The bedroom had a bad smell and there was what appeared to be a crumbling damp patch on one wall.

The furniture looked as if it had not been attended to since the 1960s or earlier.

Sadly, this is the only hotel in the tourist part of North Nicosia.

Something has gone badly wrong with tourism throughout Cyprus.

In June 2010 the newspapers announced that Turkish Cyprus Airlines was insolvent and had been grounded.

We saw few tourists in either part of Cyprus.

Reportedly, there is a fair amount of 'organised crime' in both North and South Cyprus.

A lot of money has been made from prostitution and gambling, in both halves of the island.

The Saray hotel did not seem to want tourists, unless perhaps the tourists are going to use the hotel's casino.

I was booked into this hotel for business being the only three star hotel in the Turkish part of Nicosia. Being right in the middle of the city it's location was ideal, and the restaraunt/breakfast room on the eigth floor gave a great view of the city.
But...
There seemed to be a distinct lack of interest shown by the staff - at breakfast there was hardly ever any one around, and the choice wasn't briliant.
The hotel offers free wi-fi but for the four nights I was there I couldn't connect once. Spoke to the staff at reception who continually said they would contact the provider, but never came up with any reasons, and the problem wasn't rectified.
The room was large, but in need of decoration. Mattress was hard, and the pillows even harder. The shower in the bathroom wasn't particularly clean, and on flushing the toilet on occassions water came from the cistern onto the bathroom floor; a plumber was desperately needed
It 's a hotel which obviously has a lot of potential, but needs a bit of care and attention. As far as I know there aren't any other business style hotels in the north of the city, but now the border is open I would stay on the Greek side if I came again where there seems to be plenty of choice
