“Perfect holiday and wedding!”
Reviewed 1 January 2014 via mobile

I researched loads for the perfect holiday and wedding destination. After looking on trip advisor I found the Athena beach hotel was the perfect place! And I was not disappointed.
The hotel itself was beautiful, all the staff was friendly and welcoming, they had a theme night every night of the week so it wasn't repetitive which catered for adults and kids. There was always enough sunbeds for everyone. Over all I found this hotel to be perfect!
We also got married here and can't praise the staff highly enough they arranged everything we needed from flowers to champagne breakfasts. ( our wedding planner even went out her way on the day to go To macdonalds and bring our kids a little treat to munch on whilst waiting ) they really did make it the best day of our lives. I would highly recommend anyone who is thinking if getting married to consider the Athena beach or just to holiday there. We will be returning very soon :)

We stayed for one week in this hotel at the end of September 2013. Our first impression was very good. Check in was a pleasant and speedy process and the staff at the desk were very pleasant.

Once we had taken the lift to our room, however, we were immediately struck by how dated the hotel was. The corridors and the room itself felt as though they had been taken directly from the early 80s. Later when we returned to reception and paid more attention to it, this also seemed very dated. I should clarify that this wasn’t unpleasant but we did feel that the whole hotel would benefit from modernisation.

We found our room to be more than adequate and comfortable and was suitably furnished. The balcony and the furniture on it more slightly below par as the furniture seemed very old, cheap and was discoloured. Again, this didn’t necessarily detract from our enjoyment of the balcony. Our room had a sea view and it was certainly worth paying extra for this as it was very pleasant to watch sunsets from the balcony. The balcony overlooked the pool area so it was a good vantage point from which to watch the comings and goings of other guests and we had a bird’s eye view of the gala night which we didn’t attend but was entertaining to watch especially as there was traditional live music.

We didn’t eat at the hotel during our stay so I’m unable to comment on this.
We were very pleased to find a very well equipped shop on the ground floor. This had many souvenirs as well as essential items, groceries, newspapers, magazines etc. We found the gentleman who worked in the shop to be very pleasant and approachable although I cannot remember his name.

The numerous pools were very good. They were spacious and never felt crammed. The water was a good temperature. We normally used the pools around late afternoon when they were virtually empty apart from the occasional boisterous Russian teenager demonstrating their diving ability to other guests. There were sufficient sun loungers for everyone and we particularly liked the ones on the lawn area and on the beach. We walked along the coast path a few times to Paphos and we were struck by how close together the sun loungers were at other hotels. They were squashed in so tightly at some hotels that I don’t think I’d have liked using them if I was staying there. This wasn’t a problem at the Athena Beach as there was ample space especially on the lawn. There is a jetty from the beach and we walked along this a few times to look at the fish nearby, although I wouldn’t recommend that the jetty be used by anyone with mobility issues as it does moved quite violently with the tide.

We used the terrace bar quite frequently at the start of our holiday. It wasn't called the terrace bar but I can’t remember the actual name of it. This was rather a nice place to enjoy an evening drink especially with the pool lit up. However, our enjoyment of the bar was really spoiled by the attitude of the staff there. It was quite unsettling to hear them ask each other loudly how long was left to closing time and then do theatrical grumpy faces when there was longer left than they would have liked. On one occasion we were having a chat with member of bar staff who was telling my partner and I about a particularly busy day she’d had the day before catering for a large wedding. It was a very pleasant (and rare) chat until this individual was called away very harshly by another member of staff. She apologised and said something along the lines of letting her colleagues down by talking with us.

On another occasion we had gone to the bar, bought two drinks and waited for our change of around 10€. We waited for around 20 minutes before asking where it was although we asked a different staff member to the one we had paid. She went away and made some inquiries before coming back and saying that the cashier at the bar would like to speak with us. So I went to speak with the cashier who said that she had given our change to our server and that it had obviously been lost somewhere between her and my partner and I. It took this to mean that our server had failed to give us our change. Nevertheless the cashier gave us another 10€.

We found the location of the property to be ok. It wasn’t brilliant as it was some distance from Paphos harbour. We walked it a few times and it took around 20 minutes each way. However, because the hotel is a little further away it does mean that the surroundings are quite quiet and peaceful so that was a bonus.

We used the Wi-Fi quite frequently during our stay and found it to be reasonably priced and reliable and definitely worth using.

All things considered, I would recommend the hotel but if I went again I’d avoid the bar and spend my evenings on the balcony instead which is what we did about half way through because we were made to feel like an inconvenience.

Room Tip: Try to get a view of the sea as the rooms on the other side of the hotel overlook a busy main road.

Me and my partner stayed at the hotel for a week in late November , we travelled with our 12 week old baby , this was made aware at the time of booking .... When we got to our room there was no cot and two single beds .
We called reception and a cot was soon in the room , that said the rooms are so small to say it was cramped !!!!!!!

We had the misfortune of getting a land view room and the views are horrible and the balcony so small as to be almost unusable .

The hotel grounds are nice with plenty of sun beds if the sun shines , we did get a bit of sun for the time of year , the pools are just about unusable as they are so cold not very good with a hotel of this so called star rating , in fact the sea was warmer and that's saying something , this is a common complaint so it would seem the hotel thinks this is acceptable !!!

The buffet food isn't that bad really there's plenty of choice ok it's not alacarte but what buffet is that's why I prefer to eat out instead of at the hotel but at this time of year in paphos there's not much open , the worst thing about the buffet dining is that a fair few people seem to think the foods going to run out and are in a bit of a rush to fill there plate !!!!.

Most of the staff are really good and very friendly , especially the old boy who manages the buffet restaurant down stairs he is very helpful and always happy to see you , and never stops running around making sure everyone is happy , the owners of the hotel should double whatever they are paying him .

If I'm honest I can't see us returning back to paphos as it's an awful place just a big town with a few hotels slapped on the side ,ayia napa is much nicer and has much better restaurants .

One other thing to mention is that at the time of year we went its all very old people and I mean very old , who in there defence most Were lovely but we would just prefer a few people our own age ,another reason why paphos probably isn't for us , maybe in another 40 years time we would fit in :) but like I said that's no fault of the people there it's just that the resort is really for old age pensioner at this time , perhaps thompson should mention this .

In summery

Not a bad hotel just not particularly special either .

Booked this hotel as part of a group and stayed all inclusive.

The hotel is huge, beautifully kept and right on the beach. The staff are always helpful and polite and the service is great. The restaurant is always full of delicious options for all meals, making it possible to eat something different every day. On the first morning (Sunday) there was even a large ice bowl full of bottles of Prosecco for breakfast! (one glass at a time).

The beach has loungers and sunshades but is quite small and rocky but the pools are huge and a re also surrounded by sun loungers and sunshades. The hotel staff a continually patrolling the outside areas so you don't even need to get up to replenish your cocktails!

All-in-all a first class hotel in a great location and fantastic weather, to boot. We would certainly consider going back there again (not something we do often).

Room Tip: The beach facing rooms are more expensive and we stayed in one of the rooms facing inland. These gi...

Stayed here in September for our honeymoon in a suite with a private swim up pool. The room was amazing and the food in all the restaurants was lovely. The only gripe we had was we arrived at about 23.00 and it would have been a nice touch if there would have been some sandwiches available in the room instead of just fruit. We had a long day and was starving and all the restaurants had shut by the time we got to the room. Lovely, relaxing honeymoon. Just what we needed after the stress of organising a wedding. Thanks to all the staff for a great time.

This was our third visit to this hotel and we enjoyed our stay just as much as the previous visits. We had a ground floor sea view room which was ideal due to a foot injury but also offered easy access to the pools and restaurants.

The food at this hotel is excellent and I could not fault it. There is a very good buffet selection at breakfast and dinner where we could always something very enjoyable although my waist line suffered a bit.

A lot of the visitors at this time of year are bowlers taking advantage of the excellent bowling green facilities along with the warm weather.

Room Tip: Some side sea view rooms overlook other hotels and do not see much of the sea.
