Booked this holiday with Jet2 for the beginning of July 2013. First time with Jet2 and was really impressed with good flight times (9am out and 5pm return). Also the most legroom experienced with any holiday flight. Another bonus is that the seats do not recline so no problem with the person in front. Alexander the Great must be the best hotel we have stayed at to date. Sunbed allocation is a great idea - do not understand why other hotels do not do the same. Presentation and quality of the food was excellent. Did not try the other restaurants as we were happy with the different theme every night in the main restaurant. Free water and wine or beer or soft drink with meals was also a good idea. Evening entertainment was excellent. A four star hotel with five star service. We will return!

I think this is our 7th visit - we just seem to find booking somewhere else too difficult as this seems like 'home'.

The upgraded rooms are superb and the staff and facilities are excellent and the evening entertainment has become very professional this year - much improved from our previous visit.

Whilst in Paphos we have looked at other options and certainly many of the other hotels are more spacious and the restaurants offer tables that don't make you feel you are sharing your meal with others guests (as the tables are so close), and perhaps in the evening it is unfortunate when some parents feel unable to control their children and stop them running around the tables. However, that said, this is a friendly hotel with staff who genuinely care about service and looking after guests and that is something that only comes with good training so all credit to the hotel for that.

Sadly the lack of routine outdoor gourmet dining with chefs in their white hats which was offered every few days in previous years has meant that the atmosphere of dining has bee lost a little.

However, that said, with all the other hotel and self catering options considered we will hopefully return again next summer but just for bed and breakfast and wi eat out locally as without the alfresco dining the evening meals has lost their appeal.

Two days left which we will enjoy to the full!

We stayed here for 2 weeks July/August in room 247 overlooking the pool (definitely worth paying extra for a sea view) the room was immaculately clean and it was lovely to wake up and sit on the balcony.
We ate at all the restaurants and all the food and service was to a very high standard we particularly liked the Italian and Japanese. The food and presentation was amazing.
The sunbed allocation is great, we had beds overlooking the beach for the first few days as there were none available by the pool but if you ask the allocation staff each day they can change your sunbed if some come available in a different place.
We went out most evenings but the nights we stayed at the hotel we found the entertainment very good the team work very hard on their shows. They also work all day providing games and entertainment for all ages.
ALL the staff are polite and genuinely want to help you to have the best holiday. The management obviously picked them very carefully. I think a lot has got to do with the manager who you would see each day walking round the grounds and hotel talking to his staff. He also ate in the restaurant each lunch time and always had time to have a chat to the holidaymakers. I would also like to mention Deep who always had a smile on his face and worked in all the restaurants and even remembered our room number after the second day !! Amanda who worked at the Infinity bar I feel she could have benefited from a sun hat as her face looked a bit burnt but she was always happy and cheerful Emelia who worked in the Infinity bar during the day and in the Alexander bar in the evening she was quite quiet but always very attentive and lastly Ankh who worked in the Cafe Royale what a very polite lady when we thanked her for pouring our coffee she always replied you're very welcome .
Thankyou all for a wonderful relaxing holiday.

Room Tip: Pay extra for a sea view well worth it

Stayed at the Alexander for our RUBY wedding anniversary (3rd AUG) ,great room (265) food outstanding ,staff really helpful ,can't recommend Limanaki Greek tavern meal ( no mousaka), but waiters very good , telling you what each dish contained. Only way Alexander can be improved is to be ADULTS ONLY .

Room Tip: Sea view rooms very quiet compared to road view rooms

We stayed at the Alexander the Great for 11 nights recently. We normally stay in Ayia Napa but were drawn to this hotel after reading excellent reviews on Trip Advisor and seeing it advertised in various holiday brochures. On entering the hotel, we were more than impressed by the reception/lobby area and it was clearly obvious that a great deal of money had been spent on the recent renovation project.

Check-in was smooth and efficient. We were provided with a welcome drink and completed a registration form, then shown to dinner downstairs in the Roxanne restaurant. The porter took our luggage swiftly to our room.

We were allocated a sea view room on the 3rd floor which was lovely and spotlessly clean with an amazing view. Extra touches, such as wardrobes with lights, slow closing drawers, a window in the bathroom with remote control blind, speakers in the bathroom and a partly carpeted floor area, were a real added bonus. All in all the room was magnificent. The maids did a fantastic job and again it was very convenient having our pool towels changed every evening ready for the next day. When we complained that our daughter’s sofa bed was too hard to sleep on, the maid puffed it up with an extra duvet and checked that she was happy with it the next day.

The pool and Jacuzzi/spas were excellent as was the Hotel Spa where I had a massage.

Kiku, the Japanese restaurant, was amazing with excellent staff and excellent food. The atmosphere was very relaxing.

Unfortunately, there are some negatives with the hotel and we sadly feel that this expensive holiday did not meet our expectations. In some respects the hotel does deserve its 4 stars but I have only given 3 and I will list the reasons why.

Website / Brochure Inconsistencies

The hotel website states that the Alexander’s Bar is open until 1.00am daily. This was never the case. On many occasions during our stay the bar staff asked us for last orders at 12.15 am. On a couple of occasions we were not even asked if we wanted a last drink and when we went to ask the head bar man if we had missed last orders, he abruptly said “yes”. The hotel is missing out on extra revenue as often the bar would still be busy at 12.30 am. Whilst the female bar staff were excellent and friendly, the male bar staff barely managed a hello. Early in the evening, before dinner, we often had to wait some time to be served due to the bar being so busy. In our opinion, there were never enough evening bar staff.

The website mentions the dress code for the restaurants, as does the booklet provided in the rooms. This states that long trousers must be worn in the Roxanne restaurant. In the other restaurants, it states “smart / casual” and does not state that long trousers need to be worn. However, my husband was refused entry to the Italian restaurant when wearing a pair of knee length smart shorts, yet the previous night we witnessed a group of men were wearing shorts. However, when my husband argued this fact with one of the waitresses, he was abruptly informed that they were not. The Roxanne restaurant was boiling hot on every night that we ate there. We do not feel it is justified requesting men to wear long trousers in such a hot restaurant. We can understand that swim shorts are not acceptable but a smart pair of knee length shorts with a shirt should be classed as acceptable. We witnessed men wearing long trousers but singlet vest tops. This is not smart; in fact they looked scruffy. We also witnessed women being allowed to wear whatever they liked, for example hot pants and a boob tube. This is totally unfair and quite sexist. When we ate at the Roxanne restaurant, my husband would have to wear long trousers and then go up to the room and change into shorts to wear out for the remainder of the evening. This was such an inconvenience. When visiting such a hot country, we do think it a bit extreme to request that men wear long trousers in a buffet restaurant. The restaurant is not even A La Carte!

Staff

There appeared to be total inconsistency with regards to the friendliness and manner of some of the staff. Whilst some staff members were more than welcoming, friendly and happy to help, others appeared arrogant and rude. Whilst Anka and Raj deserve a special mention, some of the staff who worked at the Infinity Pool Bar could barely manage a hello. They seemed unhappy and demotivated.

Food

As we stayed for 11 nights, we were allowed to eat in the Italian restaurant twice and the Japanese twice. We did not bother with the Greek restaurant. The Italian on the first occasion was amazing but the second was a complete let down. I ordered ravioli for myself and my daughter (we are vegetarian) only to be told the restaurant had run out! How can an Italian restaurant run out of ravioli? It is a bit like a Pizza Hut running out of pizza. After ordering the chocolate lava cake we were told that the chef had run out of that too! (The menu did not have many choices.) My daughter and I had some other kind of pasta which was covered in a tomato sauce and bacon, which was disgusting. (Great when we are vegetarians!)

Large Groups

It is a real shame that large groups take over the hotel. We like a relaxing, peaceful holiday; however, sadly our holiday was anything but! On one evening, when returning late to the Alexander’s Bar, a large group of about 30 had taken over the central area of the bar area – they had moved tables and chairs together, which meant we had to sit right near the entrance to the bar. We did not feel welcome at all. On one evening when coming back to the lobby area, the same group had moved about 40 chairs and were performing their own quiz. This seemed rather bizarre and we have never witnessed this kind of thing happening in any other hotel we have visited. It was quite intimidating and we honestly felt like we did not belong at this hotel.

Sun Bed Allocation

The sun bed allocation system is a great idea. We have stayed at other hotels who adopt this approach too. However, the sun beds were far too close to each other which meant you had very little privacy from your sun bed neighbours.

To summarise, ATG hotel has many advantages and could be excellent but there are too many negatives for us to ever consider returning. We appreciate there are excellent reviews on Trip Advisor; however, everyone’s opinion is of course different!

For our last 3 holidays abroad we have stayed at the Alion Beach Hotel in Ayia Napa. The service there is second to none and each and every member of staff cannot do enough for you. We never received anywhere close to the same level of customer service/care at ATG. All of the staff and manager at the Alion go the extra mile to do their very best to ensure that each and every guest has a memorable holiday. In some respects we felt like second class citizens at ATG. Sadly we cannot see ourselves returning in the future which is a shame because there are some real positives as previously mentioned.

Finally, a special mention to Craig (night security) who tried to sort out some of our grievances with the hotel manager (we never saw him at all) and also Phillipa, Guest Relations, who did her best for us and apologised for the hotel not meeting our expectations, and made sure our last evening was special!

Room Tip: Sea View Room is a must!
