“A pleasant stay”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 November 2013

We stayed in this hotel in Paphos for one week as part of a package with Saga. The hotel is excellent with very nice recently refurbished rooms. The maid service was very good with nice clean rooms and copious towels! The rooms are well appointed with very comfortable beds, tea and coffee facilities and many other facilities. We could have used an extra easy chair at times.
The food in the restaurant, buffet style, was very good indeed with a wide choice and excellent quality. It was all well presented and the staff serving and waiting were pleasant and helpful.
The pools were nice although the outdoor pool was invigorating rather then warm - the sea was warmer! We tended to tour each day rather than use the sun loungers but people rate the reservation service for the loungers highly.
The location is nice, on the sea (a public beach and promenade between hotel and sea). It is close to the harbour a 10 minute stroll away either along a road or on the prom. The beach is coarse sand and gravel but calm and very safe for swimming.

We had a side sea view room - well you could see the shore and parts of the harbour if you leant out over the balcony but it was not what I would term a side sea view! The noise from the road in front of the hotel was intrusive at times - young people the world over like to burn rubber on Friday and Saturday evenings! Choose a full sea view for the best experience.

Room Tip: Choose a full sea view room - side sea view is not ideal and a full road view would be even noisier...

Dear Reviewer,

Let me express my sincere thanks and appreciation for your kind words and to be given the opportunity to extend our hospitality.

Your views about the hotel, with its very nice recently renovated rooms, comfortable beds, complimentary tea and coffee making facilities, the very good buffet in Roxanne's restaurant, the sunbed reservation system, the location and most importantly the staff being pleasant and helpful are most appreciated by all of us here at the hotel.

It gives me great pleasure to have met your holiday expectations and hope to be able to welcome you back at the Alexander the Great Beach Hotel in the not too distant future.

From the moment you step through the front doors, you know you are "home" The reception staff remember you and give you a warm welcome back. When you are a repeat customer your booking in form is already filled in and the glass of orange juice is most welcome in the heat.
The newly refurbished rooms are comfortable and provided all the amenities you require, the TV has channels to suite every taste.
The breakfast is a joy, sitting outside is part of our holiday and the variety of food is amazing, traditional English breakfast, cold buffet, cereals, porridge, everything you could wish for. The staff in the restaurant are friendly and efficient.
The hotel is ideally situated within easy walking distance of the harbour but isolated from any noise. There is a path at the rear of the hotel that takes you down to harbour one way and along the coast the other. This path is excellent for those with mobile difficulties as it is wide and even.
For those that do not wish to leave the hotel, there is a sunbed for everyone, allocate on arrival and plenty of diverse activities provided by a very able Entertainment team. This same team provides excellent evening entertainment with songs and dancing for all tastes and of course Ellie's quizzes. Once again the bar staff are friendly and efficient.
We were on Bed and Breakfast so I can not comment on the evening meals, apart from one night in the Garibaldi restaurant where we had a really nice meal. There are several local tavernas within walking distance.
Finally not forgetting the Guest Relations Officer who has a very good insight of local places, events etc.
It is no wonder that people have revisited this hotel many times, 65 being the record.
I would not hesitate to recommend this hotel.

Short ten minute walk to the harbour for god range on restaurants. This hotel has been refurbished very recently. Service second to none happy caring staff, many British all speak good English. Spotless rooms. Food very good and we were able to use the top cuisine waiter service Italian restaurant once a week at no extra cost. Also in price on our half-board Thomson package was a decent sized safe and a drink with our evening meal. No sunbed wars - you can choose your favourite spot (beach or pool side) and your room number goes on it as reserved (think you can get it changed too). Large stylish lounge and reception area. Big 6 foot bed in large rooms. Downsides? Coffee offered at the table for breakfast very cheapo - but I am a coffee snob. The TV great idea but will seem too complex to many. They still have the old system which promises main UK channels but they are usually not there. I asked the desk and a member of staff showed how, via the TV effectively becomes a computer screen and the remote a wireless mouse. You click on various items to get UK TV and then you can choose from most of the Freview channels. But the written instructions are not too helpful. Apart from that a fab experience - really!

Room Tip: We had a room with a side view nearest the harbour - balcony got no sun - but it would have been hot...

I visited Alexander the Great in October to have a full body massage in the Serenity Spa by Becky and the whole experience was extremely relaxing and professional. I thoroughly recommend a visit to the spa during your stay at this hotel, it will make your holiday. Keep up the good work!

We stayed in a superior sea view room. The room was a very bright and spacious room with a great view of the med sea. I especially enjoyed the blue night lights which were available in the bathroom. The kids club/entertainment team were very good, giving daily quizzes and provided a evening show along with activities for kids/teens during the day like-Water polo, table tennis and darts. Another good feature was the allocation for sun beds apon arrival and they were yours for the week, no need to get up early and reserve your sun beds
The new refurbishment is a fantastic upgrade.
I look forward going next year.

This is the first holiday for years that I booked through a travel company. The service from Thompsons leading up to our arrival at ATG was unbelievable poor. However the hotel itself was great in every way. I wont go on about the service, cleanliness, staff and sunbed allocation because it's already been said, and it is great. We only did B&B as we like to try different restaurants in the evenings. It's an easy stroll into Paphos, but we used the numerous restaurants around the hotel area, not far to walk and a great choice. Food portions in the hotel for lunch were very large, so at lunch times we tended to use a small sandwich shop across the road from the hotel where they make up rolls to order, got drinks and crisps and ate them on the beach. Other option would be to share a hotel bar lunch between 2. Travelled with our 13 year old son who shared our room. The room was big enough but not over large. My son slept well on the 'sofa chair', but he is slim and not too tall. A larger built teenager or full grown adult may struggle, you may want to check out the actual size before booking. There're things to do if you want at no extra cost. We played tennis every day. They provide all equipment but it's advisable to book to get the time you want. Table tennis, organised sessions or just play on your own. Archery sessions. There's a gym, sauna and steam room. There's a few other things like yoga which we didn't try. The hotel was full as it was half term but it didn't feel full and wasn't over run with children. You're right by the beach and yes it was warm enough to swim in. There's all sorts of water sports available within a few minutes walk. We did paragliding, jet skiing and took a motor boat out for an hour. There's also a good go karting place not too far. A bit too far to walk and as we hadn't hired a car we rang them and they picked us up and dropped us back for free, can't ask for more than that! Things that are provided - pool towels(changed daily), soap, shower gel, shampoo (as much as you need) and hair dryer. Free internet everywhere, and you can get ALL UK TV channels in your room. All staff were very helpful so if while you are there you have any problems go and ask them, I'm confident they will be able to sort it. I contacted them (via email) before we arrived and they replied promptly and efficiently. So much so I would advise not to travel with Thomsons but to book direct with the hotel. I'm still waiting to hear back from David Burling, Thomsons MD, who promised to get back to me weeks ago.

Stayed at the Alexander the Great Hotel just the once as we are more villa people but, our stay there was very comfortable, the rooms are very nice, (have recently been refurbished), the Restaraunt serves lovely food, no complaints at all, the setup of the hotel is to a high standard, with a beautiful reception area leading to bars overlooking the pool and sea. The pool area overlooks stunning views over the sea and you can see right down the coastline. Cleanliness is of a high standard. Definitely recommend this hotel to both families and for couples looking for a romantic retreat.
