Reviewed 18 September 2012

Two 49 year olds just returned from 10 days at the Pioneer Beach hotel and no complaints really. You would have to be hard pushed or extremely critical to find a lot at fault. We arrived at 10pm at night so excused the inclusive coach transfer and opted to get a taxi outside the airport. No waiting and 30 Euros.
We booked a sea view room through Thomson’s online; we had a room side on the hotel but a good view of the sea and lovely views of sun going down at night. Bed was huge and lots of pillows to choose from.Good sized bathroom. Complimentary wine and fruit were in the room as was a bottle of water.
We opted for the B&B option, from fresh fruit, chesses and cold meats to full English breakfast and omelettes cooked to order. There was even a healthy option table and an impressive gluten free section. Most people were on a mission to fill their plates with as much food as they could! We ate at the snack bar at lunchtime and an average of 20 Euros a time.

Sun beds were an issue from previous reading on here and were correct, this seems more from the ‘mature’ age group of the guests (we still think we are young) and whom seem intent on getting up at an unearthly hour, banging their doors and rushing to get a sun bed nearest the pool/bar/toilets, most didn’t even venture into the pool the whole holiday from what we saw. We got up at a leisurely 9am and went to the beach a short stroll past the pool and had no problems getting a sun bed. There was a small jetty as well to avoid the seaweed just leading off the beach for the faint hearted. I must add there were some guests younger than us but not many.

We ate out every evening except the bar-b-q night which is held weekly at the hotel which was worth staying for. All the other evenings we walked down the road to the Crocodile Bar and had a few drinks. There were numerous restaurants in that arer which we ate in. Gabor – French restaurant, 60 Euros with wine and they give you a complimentary glass of liquor when you pay. Well worth a visit, we went twice; ladies get given a rose when you leave. The Rib Shack next door, steaks, fajita's, chicken etc, this was good and about 50 Euros with wine, Bombay Restaurant, Indian, was good as well. Don Luigi’s pizzeria went for pasta here and the best I have ever tasted. All these restaurants were in the same road and next to each other. We walked the mile or so back to the Hotel after dinner stopping at the Häagen-Dazs for ice cream which is a must. Buses run every hour and at only 1 euro each day is good but we liked to walk.

We hired a car for 3 days, the Thomson rep tried to book one for us through their Europcar dealer but she got exasperated with them as she admitted they were useless and we tried the hotels car hire. Immediate availability. We also hired Quad Buggy for 60 Euros for the day and drove up into the hills that was great fun; we went to the recommended Latchi and ate at Faros in the harbour.

The drinks in the hotel were overpriced, we had bought some spirits at the airport and then mixers at the supermarket and then enjoyed them sitting on our balcony at night. The mini fridge in the room was excellent for these drinks.

All in all I can recommend Pioneer Hotel, though be warned, the lady who we hired the Quad Buggy from told us it was the ‘old peoples’ hotel. Come end of September apparently all the mobility scooters turn up at the hotel, and the majority of guests are over 65. I am not sure how much truth there is in this but it’s always good to have a bit of warning.
We would return to the hotel but not for a few years.

Room Tip: for the views at night chilling out wiht a drink watching the sun go down , choose a sea view room

Hi just return from a week at the Pioneer, The Hotel is average compaired with other couples hotels in the group. It is situated approximatly 3km from pathos harbour etc. so its a good walk into town, but there is an excellent bus service which costs 1 euro each way upto 11 pm then it costs 2.50 euro,s. I puts our services to same.We were disappointed to find that the things we've been used to in other hotels and advertised as the package were sadly overlooked,or not supplied unless requested. The variation between standard rooms and delux sea view are minimal the rooms are the same size, the only diffrence is the veiw and slightly bigger balcony. Now to the crux of the problem, that being you will definatly need an alarm clock, and need to set it for 6.30 am to be able to get a sun bed where you choose, after that its a monopoly, after 8 am your looking for scraps. This hotel is the only one where this happening to this extent. All the other hotels along the front don't seem to have this problem,So be warned its early to bed if you want to relax in the sun !!!!!!

Room Tip: delux sea veiw rooms have the best veiws, but this side sea rooms over look waste land on one side...

Booked the holiday verbaly with thomsons direct, after being told the superior rooms had gone i would get the same deal as those rooms,, Not So.!!! it took me nearly all of the next day to try and sort, all they kept saying was the limited sea view rooms had a different package,,,, i no this because i booked and payed for a superior room(well to have all the same facilities) it took the girls in Cyprus a day to get there heads round it aswell. Completley missed sold, After speaking to the Manager at the Hotel all it would have taken was an email to the hotel to explain. Anyway the hotel is clean, the food is good, staff very efficient, they no there job.
i did one read one review, they had no food on late arrival,,, we did in our room, but really not
advisable, you dont no how long its been there, and could attract ants or what ever they get there.

Room Tip: make sure you get what you pay for, or get an email to confirm.

We booked a Deluxe Sea-view and wasn't disappointed.

We arrived a little after 22:00hrs, Our cases were taken directly to our rooms by a porter.
A meal had been plated up with a selection of meat, cheese and salad. Fruit and a bottle of wine had also being left.

We wanted a couples only hotel and the Pioneer fulfilled this requirement.

As were was all inclusive and had paid for room upgrade the hotel gave us black cards which allowed us into the à la carte restaurants if we wanted. Be advised the Thalassa Mediterranean restaurant fills up fast, so book early.

The selection of food was fantastic, my only problem was making my mind up !

As it was a couples only hotel, the atmosphere was always calm.

The hotel was spotlessly clean, the staff very helpful and friendly.

Would we book again ...Yes.

Room Tip: We had room number 39 which was above theThalassa Mediterranean restaurant over looking the sea. Sle...

This was our first visit to Cyprus and we were keen to rely on Trip Advisor reviews.
We arrived at the hotel after 10.30pm and feeling rather hungry were a little disappointed that no food was available for us and that we were not offered a voucher for the meal that we had missed. This was the only slightly negative note about the hotel.
The hotel was kept very clean in all areas and the staff were very friendly and attentive. We must mention one member of staff named 'Skevi' , she is a member of the Odysseus dining room staff and went out of her way to be friendly and chatty with us.
We were half board and had our meals in the buffet restaurant. Both the breakfasts and the evening meals were very good,of restaurant quality and were probably the best we have eaten in a holiday hotel. The selections were varied , hot and of high quality.
The Greek barbecue night on Friday was very good and involved a lot of work for the staff as the tables and food were moved outside around the pool. The entertainment was mostly low key , except for the barbecue night and the occaisonal evening entertainment around the pool bar. Entertainment was also provided in the Marco Polo bar by the resident artists , the best is 'Timmy',who is a very good guitarist and singer.
The hotel manager was always around and approachable and even said goodbye to guests as they left the hotel to go home - a nice touch.
The Thomson reps Charlotte and Laura provided a good welcome meeting and even provided a goodbye meeting. The were very professional and didn't push the excursions too much.
As this was our first visit to Cyprus,we went on a couple of excursions. These were booked via the reps and provided by Aeolos travel. Both trips to the Troodos mountains and Kykkos monastery and the Love Cyprus excursion were good value for money and the guide 'Eva' was very knowledgeable and friendly and provided us with two excellent days out.
I understand the logic of long trousers for men in the dining rooms for the evening meals. I know some people have commented on this, but surely this should be expected in a 4 or 5 star hotel, but what does seem illogical is allowing young girls in the dining room with tight micro shorts with their cheeks hanging out!
As well as the two trips taken,we used the excellent local buses. They ran past the hotel every 10 or 15 mins and cost only 1Euro per trip or 3 Euro for a day pass. The harbour was the bus station and the best thing to do was to get a bus from the stop near to the hotel to the harbour and then another to destinations such as the Old Town/Market/Coral Bay or the Tomb of the Kings etc.
We would certainly like to return again to Cyprus and particularly to the Pioneer Beach, but would return either earlier or later in the year as it was just too hot in August and reached 39C at times. In this heat it is difficult to walk very far and we had to spend quite a lot of time around the pool.
The final comment is about the flights. The Thomsonair flight from Luton was ok,with reasonable seats on a newer aircraft and we even had a video map display of the route on the overhead monitors and with audible comments from the captain. The return journey however was awful with cramped seats,no monitor and inaudible comments from the captain. Why is their no entertainment on short haul flights now? The combination of cramped seating and no videos/radios makes for an unpleasant experience.

I'm writing this while still at the hotel, just sitting inside for half an hour out of the heat.

I looked at some of the reviews and can't believe that some people are criticising the food. I'd love to see how they eat at home because this is restaurant quality.

We've been here for eight days now and are very impressed with the whole experience. The staff, a mixture of Greek Cypriots and Eastern Europeans, are faultlessly polite and attentive. We have all inclusive, but only 'premium' not 'superior'. This means that we can only eat in the a la carte restaurants twice per week, unless we pay extra. Not a problem as the food quality in the main buffet restaurant is very good. They even have a "Chinese station" where two Chinese chefs cook different dishes each day in the wok in front of you.

Our trips to the a la carte have been excellent. Presentation and quality that you would expect from a good restaurant. The fillet steak was faultless, cooked just how I asked.

Daytimes can be a bit boring, but we knew that beforehand, it's a couples hotel!! What's the alternative, screaming kids, lilo's in the pool, etc. We did all that when our family was young.

We hired a car for 3 days, trip into the mountains and Kykkos Monastery one day, fantastic, as long as you don't mind some scary mountain roads, trip to Chrysochou Bay and a speedboat hire for the afternoon on another.

The rooms are of a high standard of finish, including both rain showes and hand held shower. Flat screen tv has sky news, sports and movies if you want them.

Still here for a few days yet and thoroughly enjoying the hotel, would recommend it to anyone

Stayed at the Pioneer Beach Hotel 11th July for 11 nights, half board. We are a couple 35 - 45 age range. We chose this hotel because of it being a couples only and we didn't want any children around!

From the moment we arrived we were not disappointed with the hotel. First impressions of the clean and smart appearance was good. We had a room on 3rd floor facing the front of the hotel, room as nice size, balcony a bit small but otherwise lovely clean room.

Staff were very helpful and friendly all the time, in every part of the hotel, which is a real bonus. They couldn't do enough for you.

Food was amazing and we were always spoilt for choice. Would defiantly recommend the decked restaurant, but you must book. We did venture out for dinner as we had been recommended to visit 'Ocean Basket' fish restaurant. Food was very very nice, you need to book and be prepared to eat lots! About 10 min walk from the hotel.

Evening entertainment was good, BBQ night on fridays was very good.

1 small downside, was i didn't feel the beach wasn't private enough and a couple of times, FAMILIES from other hotels did 'appear' on the beach, which i thought ought to be tackled.

Location of hotel was good, as it was a nice walk into Paphos (about 40 mins) when we didn't feel like walking, the buses were excellent, costing 3 euros for a day ticket.

The only thing that i could really say about the holiday, was Thompson are getting very tight on the flights!, food was expensive and very average. I really believe the length of flight warrants a film on board, as it was long and boring without.

Without hesitation, I would recommend this hotel to anyone, well worth a visit and you wont be disappointed.
