Having last visited Monaco almost 30 years ago I was looking forward to returning with my 13 year old son to watch the Super Cup Final between Atletico Madrid and Chelsea. Perhaps it was a foretaste of what was to come but having arrived in Monaco at 9am we set about touring Monaco on foot and by guided bus tour before settling down for lunch at 2.40pm. Only to be told that I wouldn't be permitted a glass of wine over lunch because a blanket alcohol ban had been implemented across Monaco from 2pm until match kick off time 8.45pm! Bizarrely tables around us were full of people enjoying a nice lunch with bottles of wine etc but all had had the foresight, or good fortune, to order before 2.30pm - what nonsense! On to the stadium, the travelling fans soon got a feel for the stadium - decrepid, lacking atmosphere and atheletics track meaning spectators are far from the pitch. "We want to go home, we want to go home, this place is a .... ...., we want to go home' and quite right too. Awful catering facilities too. After 15 years in Monaco the Super Cup Final will be held in different cities beginning with Prague in 2013 and not a moment too soon - UEFA and His Serene Highness Prince Albert should hang their collective heads in shame.
