“Loved the Metropole Montecarlo”
Reviewed 5 January 2009

We spent our New Year's Eve at Metropole hotel: we booked the night before and once arrived we had a nice upgrade to a junior suite (at the same price - Euro 740 - only bed). The room was perfect with huge bathroom and sitting area - city view. The decorations at the hotel were gorgeous, all in black and gold and the menu (at a very, very high price) for New Year's Eve dinner at Joël Robuchon restaurant was delicious. We visited the Spa but had no chance to have a treatment because it was fully booked. The following night we had dinner at the brand new Japanese restaurant Yoshi, inside the hotel: excellent menu and very nice setting. Attentive staff, very professional. Highly recommended.

Well the hotel was pretty much perfect, but for around 1k a night it would want to be perfect. Everything about this hotel is classy, from the moment you come up the well maintained driveway and enter the large, beautifully decorated foyer to the tour of your room and restaurant.

The pool is outstanding, as is the spa and gym facilities.

The restaurant, bar and lobby is beautiful but very pricey. $45AUD for a couple of stubbies. I can get 4 jugs for that much! Had breakfast a few times in the hotel and it was minimalist but excellent quality. Service was outstanding, not just in the resturant but everywhere.

Location is good, but everywhere is in Monaco given you can walk the entire country in half a day.

Didn't like the overpriced WiFi and movie offerings in the room. For that much something should be for free.

We've just returned from a fabulous 3-night stay in Monte Carlo at the Metropole Palace. This really is one of the best hotels in Monaco and the staff was so attentive and worked in a manner of understated efficiency. The reception lobby is huge and luxurious with lots of plump sofas to chill out on - a perfect place for that pre-dinner drink. They played some really cool music, too. Our room (double superior) was on the second floor and although not much of a view (overlooked the roof of the lobby), it was still light and airy and at the rear so no noise from the numerous Ferraris speeding by on the main road. The bathroom was a good size with a jacuzzi tub, power shower, lots of bath goodies, robes and slippers. We did notice that there wasn't a trouser press or iron in the room, though. The restaurant (Joel Robuchon) was naturally on the pricey side but this is a two star Michelin restaurant. We only ate breakfast there, which was waiter service and consisted of the freshest breads, fruits, a delightfully light omelette and tea/coffee. I would highly recommend the Metropole for its location and outstanding facilities. Full marks for the impeccable service provided by the staff. They really made us feel welcome and pampered.

We were in town for the Monaco Yacht Show and booked the Metropole based on reviews from TA and other places. I have been to Monaco before and stayed at the Hotel de Paris as well as lesser hotels, and wanted something on par with the Hotel de Paris this time around.

The Metropole lobby is simply stunning and is always bustling with activity. We were given an upgraded room for no extra charge, with a nice sitting area and private outdoor balcony (room 11). The bathroom was large, with both shower and bath. The bath was large and luxurious and the shower had the wonderful "rain" shower head, which was great. The lobby bar had big (and expensive) cocktails and presentation. The restaurant was created by Joel Robuchon and although we didn't eat there, looked fabulous.

One gripe - Wifi is not free, which seems ridiculous when you are paying $1000 a night. You have to purchase a Wifi card that costs around 8Euro for 30 minutes. You do have an ethernet wire in your room, but ours did not work.

All in all a very comfortable stay in a beautiful hotel. Would not hesitate to stay here again.

This was a beautiful hotel in a great location but there were several serious problems for a hotel of this caliber.

This was primarily a business trip with my wife accompanying me. We had to book at the last minute for a local conference and ended up paying close to $1000 per night for a suite, they did not have any standard rooms left and most of the rest of the hotels in town were sold out.

First the good part: the room was beautiful and spacious with a partial ocean view. The service was generally very good, particularly the breakfast service. They even brought my wife a birthday cake on her birthday without being asked! All that you would expect of an expensive hotel.

Now the bad:
1. There is no wireless internet in the rooms, the only ethernet cable comes from the TV and is only about 1 meter long, we ended up having to sit on the floor to use our laptop.
2. We had problems with our rental car company and asked the concierge to find us another car company to obtain a car. He assured us that he would have the name of a company with available cars by the end of the day and would call us back. At the end of the day, there was no call. When we called the concierge back, they said they did not know what we were talking about but would find out the next day and would try to determine who we had talked to. They never did track down the particular concierge we had spoken to, but they did try to find a rental car the next day but came back empty handed. We eventually had to deal with our original rental car company on our own.

Now the really bad: My business co-worker had a similar room in the same hotel at the same price. He had to leave a day early and asked them to cancel the room 2 days ahead of time. They told him they would charge him for the last night even though their written policy stated that rooms could be canceled if cancellation was at least 24 hours ahead of time. We then decide to have one of our other co-workers stay there the last night. They had the nerve to hassle us about this--that he was not the same person registered to the room! He eventually did stay there.

These are NOT things you should expect to have to deal with in a $1000 per night hotel!!

I have been traveling extensively world-wide for the last 20 years and this was probably the most over-priced hotel I have ever experienced. Even if we had not experienced these particular problems, I would still say it was very over-priced and of poor value.

I booked the hotel after reading fantastic reviews on TripAdvisor (ranked #1 when I looked). However, my experience with the hotel has been somewhat variable - with a mostly positive experience marred by some let downs that a hotel of Metropole's class should not let occur.

I'll list these variable experiences in order of excellent to worse:
Excellent - conceirge (George), probably one of the best I've had the opportunity to speak with in my travels - friendly, has good recommendations and knows the surrounding area very well! I saw him handle an elderly, slightly hard of hearing but very demanding couple very well and professionally.

Good - the hotel exterior, and lobby. The outdoor pool area is also very pleasant to have a breakfast in.

Ok - the room was of a reasonable standard, nothing exceptional for a 5 star.

Poor - I joined the Leaders' Club on Leading Hotels of the World (LHW), which recorded your preferences. I was given a smoking room despite saying I required a non-smoking room, and unlike other LHW hotels I stayed in, they forgot to give me the membership privileges (e.g. room upgrade etc) - which the reception people acknowledged as their fault. They (who were most concerned about this) called over their guest relations person, who didn't seem very interested at all - and didn't do anything about it, which I find very unsatisfactory.

Terrible - I had a hired BMW valet parked with them over night. However, after having left the hotel and getting to my next destination about 10km away, I noticed a slight scratch on the right front bumper and a friction mark on the bottom left front bumper of the car! Now, I can't say for certain that it was the fault of the valet drivers as I only noticed it after I'd left (you don't expect these things to happen!), but can't find any other explanation for it!

Overall, a variable experience, but one which is so easy for them to fix and get right. Unfortunately, for me, it marred what could have been a great hotel experience.

The Metropole is the most modern of the major hotels in Monte Carlo. At the time of our visit only the top floors had been remodeled so be sure to ask. This property is in a very good location. It is a very short walk to the main casino.

We rented a Deluxe Junior Suite (#702) in a spa package that included a total of four hours of treatments. The room was 800€ per night. A junior suite in Europe is usually about the size of a deluxe room in the states. The bed was very comfortable. There is a couch and chairs to the right (out of the photo). The bathroom was large by European standards and very nice.

There are hairdryers in the rooms. There is a 110v outlet in the bathroom that worked to charge camera batteries and cellphones. There was also one 220v to 110v adapter we moved around as needed.

There is no iron in the room and we were told, none in the hotel. We spent 90€ (9€ each for most items) to have the hotel press them for us. Laundry service is same day if you send it early enough.

Internet access is 20€ per day. The connection is dependable and fast. Parking is 35€ per day. AT&T roams well for both data and voice. Caller ID works and reception is fantastic given the terrain.
